Saturday night dinner near Norwich, VT
There is a similar question out here. There are several good to excellent places to eat in the Hanover/Lebanon area. For Asian (Korean/Japaneese), Yama in Hanover is hard to beat. The Orient (Chineese) in Hanover is above average. Three Tomatoes in Lebanon is very good for Italian. Molly's in Hanover is good for pub & pizza, Canoe Club in Hanover is a more upscale college pub-restaurant watering hole. I agree that the one Thai place in Hanover is mediocre. For good Thai on the way home, the Siam Orchid in downtown Concord is very good. There isn't much between Lebanon and Concord.
chowin' from Manchester, NH to Norwich, VT
As others have mentioned, there is not much driving up I-89 between Concord and Lebanon. Manchester is an old mill town that has been making a comeback in the past few years, and now has several good places to eat. However, the Hanover/Norwich area is much more scenic and 'picture postcard' New England. Lots of good places to eat in the Norwich/Hanover/Lebanon area:
I will second Yama - the Hanover location has a hip urban vibe. Also in Hanover : Canoe Club preppy upscale pub/restaurant with live music. Mollys - pizza & pub food, comfortable place. In downtown Lebanon (15 minutes from Norwich) are two fun places right on the green: Three Tomatoes Trattoria, and the Salt Hill Pub. Three Tomaoes also has a hip urban vibe, and some very well prepared Italian foods. Salt Hill is an Irish pub with typical pub food, lots of beers, and an Irish jam session on Tuesday evenings.
4 Nights in Montreal, must tries?
I must disagree - many of the restaurants on Duluth are quite good - perhaps not 4 star, but inexpensive and fun. I don't really get a 'tourist trap' vibe here. The Lotus Bleu, Khybler, Panos, Spaggios, Lombardis, are all enjoyable. Lotus Bleu is second to none for Vietnamese. We always have a great time at Panos - sure the service is brisk (but spot on), and the selection is limited, but the atmosphere is relaxing and fun, and they DO know how to do a good brochette!
For me the tourist trap type restaurants are found on Prince Arthur, and some in Old Montreal. I've had some pretty mediocre meals in these areas.
4 Nights in Montreal, must tries?
Our favorite thing to do for an inexpensive night out is to head up to the Plateau, buy a bottle of wine at the SAQ on St Denis, and the stroll Duluth which is lined with interesting BYOB places. The most popular is Jarden De Panos (Greek brochette), but there are also several Italian (Spaggios is quite good), Asian, French, etc, and even an Afghan (Khybler).
Hanover, NH Area
Madison's list is a good one. I will also add Molly's to the list - a casual pizza & pub food spot right in downtown. Yama is perhaps the best & most interesting restaurant in Hanover - however avoiding sesame & mushrooms at an Asian restaurant may be tricky. Another suggestion if you like Italian - Three Tomatoes in Lebanon NH. Very pleasant casual but hip & upscale trattoria, with lots of good options. It's about 10 minutes from Hanover. For something more upscale and American, it's hard to beat Simon Pierce in Quechee Vermont, which is about 20-25 minutes from Hanover.
lunch in dartmouth, nh
I assume you mean near Dartmouth in Hanover NH? Out of the 3, I would probably choose the Canoe Club. The Canoe Club is 'upscale casual' with a New England preppy vibe. The menu is interesting, the food is well prepared and presented, the portions are modest. The room has lots of windows, and live music (usually light jazz or folk) every night. As Vter mentioned, Simon Pierce is very nice, but it's about 1/2 hour away from Dartmouth. I believe the Hanover Inn is closed for several months for renovations. The Norwich Inn is a nice old New England Inn that usually has good food. Go to UVfood.com for lots of options.
any place serving moose or game animals in VT, NH or ME?
In March, the Meriden NH (close to Lebanon) fire department puts on a wild game supper, serving boar, moose, bear, etc. This is very popular, so it sells out quickly.
Rochester & Concord, NH
How about the Siam Orchid which is downtown? We've been here several times. The food is usually very good. The service is fine, and the environment is comfortable.
Wine Stores in Hanover/Norwich area
The Hanover & Lebanon food co-ops also have a good selection of wines.
Your favorite meals in Montreal $25 and under (including tax and tip)
There are tons of fun ethnic restaurants in the plateau area that would meet your needs -
The Shish-Kebab or chicken brochettes at Jarden de Panos on Duluth are great. byob
The Lotus Bleu on Duluth (Vietnamese) has lots of delicious entrees like pork with crispy spinach. byob
L'Express - French bistro on St. Denis. No sign out front.
Nil Bleu - Ethiopian on St. Denis
Khybler Pass on Duluth - Afghan. byob
If you want to spend a little more, Au Petite Extra on Ontario.

montreal bachelorette resto suggestions ?
A chicken brochette with a salad, roasted potatoes and rice will run about $16, shrimp, lamb, etc will be a few dollars more. Things like mousaka are about $16. Appetizers run under $10. The Greek sampler appetizer is amazing. Since it's a byob, you'll save a bundle on wine. We've also brought beer in - no problem. There is a SAQ on St. Denis about 2 blocks away. Also there are several mom & pop corner stores up and down Duluth where you can get wine & beer.
Although the decor and ambiance are very pleasant, Panos is not pretentious or upscale. It's a place to come and unwind and have a great time. The simple, well prepared foods are very good, and the service is first rate. However on a busy night you may have to wait in line for a table for 15 minutes or so, especially if you opt for an outside table.
montreal bachelorette resto suggestions ?
You have lots of places (particularly on the Plateau) that meet your requirements. If you want a lively festive atmosphere, it's hard to beat Le Jardin de Panos on Duluth near Berri. This is a Greek Byob place with great brochettes (chicken, beef, lamb, seafood) and Greek specialties. If it's warm enough, try and get a table out on the back terrace. Panos is a very popular spot, especially for large groups although like most of the byob places on the Plateau they don't take reservations. The atmosphere is casual, and the entrees run between $16-22. We've been going there for 20 years and have never been disappointed.
36 Hours in Montreal
The Plateau area is filled with small, interesting, eclectic restaurants of every type, many are BYOB. The epi center of this area is where St. Denis intersects Duluth. Our favorite evening out is to pick out a nice wine at the SAQ on St. Denis, then peruse the restaurants on Duluth. Our favorites are Le Jarden de Panos (Greek), Bleu Lotus (Vietnameese), and Spaggio's (Italian). They all have great outdoor patios in nice weather, and are lots of fun.
Need Brattleboro recommendation (Vermont)
If you want something different and somewhat casual, the Thai Bamboo in downtown Brattleboro is excellent. Great environment - sedate, Asian modern decor, spotless. They have an interesting selection of very well prepared dishes. Possibly the best Asian restaurant in Vermont.
Breakfast in Hanover NH
In downtown Hanover (5 minutes from DHMC) is Lou's. Lou's is THE place for breakfast in Hanover. It's a diner type atmosphere, but a bit more upscale. Lou's has been around since the '40's and is only open for breakfast and lunch. Just fyi, DHMC's cafeteria is not bad, especially for breakfast.
Canadian Restaurants
Speaking of Canadian food, why are cheese curds not sold in the USA? Is there some kind of regulation ? These tasty nuggets are in every grocery, quick stop, supermarket in Quebec, but I've never seen them once back in the US. They are a necessity for poutine.
I-91 Vermont/New Hampshire and Montreal
Due to the proximity of Dartmouth College, there are many good places to eat in the Lebanon - Hanover NH area. Hanover has the Yama (Korean), the Orient (Chinese), Molly's (pub food), and Lou's, the classic Dartmouth lunch spot. Downtown Lebanon is home to Three Tomatoes, a very good Italian trattoria. West Lebanon NH, which is just off I-91 is a strip mall area with several fair to good lunch spots like Weathervane (seafood), Koto (Japanese), as well as the usual Denny's, 99's, Chili's etc.
There is a very good, somewhat upscale place in White River Jct Vermont - the Tip Top.
ps: I think you meant Bradford Vermont.

What happened to Jessie's in Magog?
We often visit the Magog area during the summer for some biking and eating out. Our favorite place to eat has always been Jessie's - great selection of moderately priced entrees, nice atmosphere. We drove thru Magog a few days ago to see what used to be Jessie's was transformed into what looked like an Italian restaurant. Is Jessie's gone?
looking for vegan and/or vegetarian options in the Upper Valley area
If you want something casual, the Angkor Wat in Woodstock offers veggie options. Angkor Wat is a tiny BYOB Cambodian restaurant with great, inexpensive food and a friendly staff.

Need recommendations for week long trip to Playa Del Carmen area
There is a new restaurant in Tulum pueblo that is one of the best I've been to on the entire coast. It'scalled Xcatik, and it's off on a side street - corner of Sagitario and Alfa. The neighborhood is pretty funky, but the restaurant is topnotch Mayan/fusion. Very nice ambiance and great service.
Our favorite in Playa del Carmen has always been La Pesca, across the street from the Mega store.
Italian near Hanover / White River Junction / Lebanon?
I can't believe no one has mentioned Three Tomatoes Trattoria in downtown Lebanon New Hampshire. We've lived in this area for many years, and this is our favorite fun place to eat out. Very lively, urban atmosphere, imaginative menu, nice location. Lots of interesting pasta, pizzas, seafood, chicken, salads. Sometimes the service is slow, sometimes not. Their $42 for two complete dinners before 6:00 (appetizers, entrees, wine & dessert) is a great deal. We've dined here for about 20 years, never been disappointed.
If you're willing to travel a bit, La Meridiana just outside of New London New Hampshire is wonderful. Real country style Northern Italian in a rustic farmhouse.
I've also heard some good things about Stellas.
Good luck on your husband's interview - this is a great area to live.

Brattleboro nice vibe
If you like Thai, the Thai Bamboo on the corner of Main and High street is very good - possibly the best we've found in Vermont or NH. Not only is the food good, but the space and ambiance are very pleasant.
Lebanon, NH Area- 2 Nights
In Hanover, the Orient is a good Chinese place, the best in the area. The Peking Tokyo in Lebanon is also pretty good. There is a Thai place in Hanover, but the food is only so-so. Unfortunately, no other Thai places in the area. Another option might be Yama, which is a very good Korean & sushi place. They have restaurants in Hanover and West Lebanon. If your willing to drive a little, there is an excellent Cambodian place in Woodstock Vt - the Ankgor Wat - it's a tiny mom & pop place.

Ascutney, VT.
Not too far from Ascutney is Claremont, NH. This is somewhat of a 'gritty' new england mill town. However, it's trying to reinvent itself. the cornerstone of this project is the new Common Man restaurant in an old mill complex. No expense was spared putting this very beautiful eatery in an old run down complex of mill buildings. Very beautiful setting on a rushing river. The food is quite good also.
You'll find many good restaurants in the Hanover/Lebanon area. A real fun one is Three Tomatoes Tratoria on the Lebanon Green - interesting, not typical Italian fare. For something really different, there's a tiny byob Cambodian place on the eastern end of Woodstock called Angor Wat. First rate Asian food in a very casual atmosphere.
For gritty and local, there's Daddypops Tumble Inn diner in Claremont. Not sure if they are open in the evenings.
Heading to Eastern Townships - any recs?
We've been to Magog a few times - great little town. However the only place we've really liked so far is Jesse's, which is right in the heart of the downtown. Interesting, eclectic menu, nice vibe.
We've also tried Jack-o's which was just 'ok'. There is supposed to be a very good localvore type place on the road between Magog and Mt. Orford, haven't tried it yet. We did discover a very good Asian place in Sherbrooke in the historic district, can't remember the name. The Eastern Townships are quite beautiful but not known for great dining - lots of pizza, hot dogs, potine, etc. Surprising with Montreal so close by.
Old Montreal recommendations?
We'll be in Montreal this weekend., We always wind up eating on the Plateau. However, since we'll be at Cirque de Soleil on Friday, we need to find a place to eat nearby - Old port or Old Montreal. We want someplace moderately priced and unpretentious. Also - what's the scoop on Les Deux Pierrots - good place for a beer and some music?
Summer travel Madrid to Lisboa
We just came back from Lisbon & the Alentejo a few weeks ago. If you are driving thru central Portugal, try and stop for lunch at Monseraz, a spectacularly scenic hill town near the Spanish border. There is a small but quite famous restaurant there, the Casa do Forno. Very pleasant place with very good traditional Portuguese food (seafood & pork). Further west is Evora, an interesting small city with lots of good places to eat. We spent 5 nights here, and could have stayed longer. one night we dined at a tiny mom & pop place a few blocks for the town center called D.Miguel -quite inexpensive with good typical food. Lisbon is wonderful, with plenty of great places to eat. For a fun seaside spot, check out Sesimbra about an hour south of Lisbon. We loved this little town, with great seafood restaurants on every corner.
Wanted: Recommendations for Great VT/NH Restaurants
There are lots of good places to eat in the Hanover/Lebanon/Woodstock area, which are all less than 45 minutes to Ascutney. Hanover is the home of Dartmouth College, so there is a good selection of mid priced places to eat. Perhaps the best (and highest rated) is the Yama Korean place. We are not big fans of Korean food, but the ambiance is great, and lots of people love the food. Also in Hanover is the Canoe Club, a somewhat pricey but very comfortable restaurant/tavern with live entertainment every night. Just down the road in Lebanon is Three Tomatoes, right on the Lebanon green. Very good, creative Italian food in an 'urban trattoria' atmosphere. Just across the plaza is Salt Hill Pub, which offers very hearty and inexpensive pub food, a great selection of beers, and live music on weekends. Woodstock Vt. is a more upscale touristy kind of town with many interesting places to eat. Simon Pierce, which is just down the road in Quechee, is perhaps the best known. Top notch food in a beautiful setting. For something very casual and unique, check out the Angkor Wat Cambodian place just a few blocks east of the downtown. This is a hole in the wall mom & pop place with some authentic Asian food, and one of the very few byob's in the area. Check out the uvfood website for more ideas.

There are lots, especially on the Plateau. The terrace at Le Jardin de Panos can be so relaxing and so much fun on a warm summer night - byob, order a brochette, and take in the ambience!
Traditional New England Fare
The Maine Diner on rte 1 just north of Wells is a tradition. Good home made baked beans, codfish cakes, meatloaf, etc. The church supper idea is a good one, just realize they typically are on Saturdays from 5:00 - 6:30, and of course no alcohol.
