What about the Bronx?

Just to update on the vietnamese food, world of taste was a little strange when I went a while back, and I think it might have been some ownership issues as one of the ladies who used to help in the kitchen was the only one there and it seemed like she may have been running the place (perhaps temporary)? Also, it was closed last time I went by, but no fear. Right across the street is a new Vietnamese restaurant and it seems to be run by a good number of Vietnamese people (brought a Viet person there and he said he recognized their accent, though I can't remember what he said about it). I've only had their pork chop combo with rice platter and it was very good, they take care to baste/glaze the pork very well. The pho wasn't the greatest though, to be honest, but very solid for the Bronx. I think it's a great place and the decor is much better than across the street...

Yatagan Kebab Doner Kebab Sandwich = Best In the City

Went back recently and they changed the decor somewhat (the sabre is gone from the wall) and it seemed like new people. I wonder if the owner changed. Their menu is different, and the employees were confused when we ordered our old standby of doner sandwich + vegetarian platter (i.e. falafel + baba + hummus). They charged a lot more than before for that platter, and didn't even give us pita with it... the food seemed a little worse for the wear, but I may have been a bit biased by the service. I think I won't be going back anytime soon, sadly...

MINANGASLI [MINANG ASLI] has reopened

What would you all suggest there? I've only 'discovered' this area of Elmhurst (with the other Indonesian place down the block, great dumplings next door, and Pho Bang and Chao Thai down the block not to mention a ton of other places) recently and was somewhat unimpressed with the food the two times I've tried it. The rendang was rather uninspired, as well as a chicken dish I had. Is it really under new management? I'm excited to try the Java Village place nearby, as it got good reviews as well...

Searching for pizza in the Bronx...

Patricia's is not bad, but don't ever get their pizzas for delivery or takeout! They have focaccia bread that they bring to the table also, with a garlic/pepper olive oil that's pretty good (although sometimes they just have regular bread). I am partial to their alla arugula pizza, with prosciutto, although they have many good options. Their pricing structure is a bit confusing as well, as sometimes they will charge you to do a half/half pizza and sometimes they won't.

Search for shaved ice/bubble tea yields a gem in Bayside

I actually had to look that up... a dried plum sort of flavor? I asked at the store the other day, and they said that they have dried plum powder- I suppose you could ask them to use that on a shave ice. They said it's a Taiwanese flavor as well, assuming we're talking about the same thing... hope this helps!

Oh, and it seems that someone found the store from this post and took pictures and everything as well... I'm glad they liked it!

Search for shaved ice/bubble tea yields a gem in Bayside

They have a bunch of flavors of ice cream and a friend of mine got green tea ice cream and said it was very good... yeah, it's really a very convenient place and they have a surprisingly big selection of drinks/snacks. I really like the java chip blended coffee drink and their fruit smoothies as well... hope you will like it!

Dosa Hutt - what did we eat???

I was wondering about the coffees you're talking about... I got a coffee there once and I thought I saw them using a kind of instant coffee mix in the back room? Is this the South Indian coffee you're talking about or are there different types?

Flushing Mall (39th Ave.) Updates or Reviews?

Actually, I would agree about the "delicate" comment... seems to look and taste like it's more carefully prepared. The firmness I was speaking of lends a nice chewiness to the dough to complement the filling. I'm getting hungry thinking about this...

Back to the original topic, I actually had a bowl of pork chop curry rice with a sausage and some cilantro/jalapeno/beancurd salad at the Taiwanese all the way at the end on the left (from the entering side). While I guess it's not as delicate as the katsu from a fancy Japanese place, the price was right and it was still good. I remember a couple of the stalls used to seem to change almost every week, although the ones there now seem to be a bit more stable. I've always wanted to try the "steak" place that I see a lot of people getting food from... is it any good?

Search for shaved ice/bubble tea yields a gem in Bayside

I've been searching for places to satisfy my random bubble tea (and sometimes shaved ice) cravings for a while now since I've moved from LA, and I've found a real neat place in Bayside... just south of 73rd on Bell Blvd. The store is called Sweet Adele's, and is owned by a nice couple who told me they've been there for over 20 years. They have candy, chocolates, and Japanese snacks (including California rolls for 2.50, natch!) as well.

The bubble tea that I got is the cheapest that I remember paying, and the flavor is very authentic and most importantly, the bubble/boba/tapioca balls are the perfect chewiness (I'm sorry, I'm kind of a freak when it comes to these things- I hate a stiff, nasty tapioca ball in a diluted bubble tea drink). Also, they had a Shaved Ice machine that was the same as the ones I've seen in Hawaii... in flower cups like Matsumoto's! They have a lot of flavors also, and red beans/condensed milk on top if you like.

I also had a nice cup of coffee, fresh ground and brewed for less than the Dunkin Donuts a few stores down (why would anyone go there?!?!)... check it out if you're in the area!!

I think I remember that in LA, there was a branch of Din Tai Fung, a purportedly Taiwanese xiao long bao shop. Their version was quite good, and I remember the skin/wrapper was a bit firmer than the Shanghainese version. Of course, it's very hard to get a decent xiao long bao even in Shanghai these days unfortunately...

ISO: Sit on the floor Japanese?

Yakiniku west does indeed have floor seating; you have to take off your shoes at the front door. They have a good special on Mondays where the short rib platters are half off (still need to eat a few orders though, since it's about 3 oz each) and they range from 3.75 (reg) to 4.75 (prime). I think there's also Wed/Sun specials for the kobe/wagyu beef and from 5-6:30 there's an early bird special that comes with a set including a bibimbap kind of rice dish, meat, and some veggies. Pretty good and reasonable prices as well...

Yatagan Kebab Doner Kebab Sandwich = Best In the City

I don't know about ali baba, but the yatagan doners are pretty good if you eat it once in a long while. It tastes really good at first, but the grease really sits in your belly. It's good to share with a assorted vegetarian platter, helps cut through it...
