Good food in McHenry County?

I agree about Morettis.

Over rated food. My husband had the short rib rigatoni and it was the worst I ever had. The "gravy" was floury and bland, the meat stringy and chewy. All together, just gross. My chicken parmesan was ok. Nothing to write home about (esp for $13-14).

and stay away from the dismal goat cheese app. I should have known better (marinara and goat cheese, blech!)

Swissotel Breakfast?

It is ok. It is usually served buffet style.

They serve stuff like mueslix (spelling?) and other Swiss specialties along with the normal American items.

On the plus side, their juices are usually fresh squeezed, etc.

Looking for dives..

I picked my DH from the airport last night and had always wanted to try Flamingo's - we were not disapppointed!

They serve blue corn chips with a tomatillo salsa and another dish with ceviche.

We started off with a app - baked goat cheese in a chorizo/ chipotle sauce. This was to die for - SPICY but GOOD!

I had the Filete de Dorado con costra de cangrejo which is
Pan fried Hawaiian Mahimahi with crab meat crust and chipotle lobster sauce.

Again, very good. Simple, fish cooked perfectly. The only complaint (and it is minor) that I would make is that I did not care for the rice. It was very brothy and was pretty overpowering.

DH had the Filete de Matarraya en poblano chile salsa - Pan fried Skatewin fillet in poblano strips, served in a cream sauce. It was also served with saffron rice - his rice was MUCH better than mine.

I also had the 20 oz margarita. Darn thing was a MONSTER.

They also put on a tasting menu for $38. That will be next time...

Also, if you are using a GPS, please be aware that it comes up as Marisqueria Flamingo's.

The menu online is also out of date as there are new dishes and some are no longer offered or are out of season.

Best chicago food neighborhoods?

Andersonville or Lakeview - both are good. Lakeview is pricier than Andersonville - both have parking issues..

Fried Chicken Help Please!

Has anyone tried coconut oil as a frying oil with chicken?

What's the best bakery in Chicago for sweets?

I believe Bleeding Heart was shut down for a little bit by CBOH a couple of months ago...I could be wrong but I thought it was them.

The last time I was there, I had the bread pudding and it was very very good but that is going on a year ago (my how time flies...)

Wasn't the owner of that bakery on one of Food TVs championship cake competitions? Seems I remember the name...

Lobster roll? Fried clams?

You should have had the rice with a pitcher of the Mai Tais - you stop caring about the lack of shrimp!

Seriously, Chinns is great for crab. I can recommend the mahi as well.

The lobster was ok, surprisingly a little overdone and tough.

Good food in McHenry County?

Famous Dave's moved to Algonquin.

Best thin crust pizza is a little place called Sal's Pizza Co - off Rte 62. Has delivery and carryout, no eat in.

Burnt Toast is owned by the owners of Reese's restaurant (I believe the one in LITH, not the one in Algonquin) - just an FYI.

We just ate at Port Edwards a few weeks and I agree - the quality has really gone down hill. We had the goat cheese/artichoke appetizer and it was ice cold, no flavor. The entrees (EXPENSIVE!) were no better. They do not serve their marble bread anymore. If Ed (the owner) wants to get out of the restaurant business, he is finding a good way to go about doing it. Dinner was $150 for two people (apps, drinks and dinner) and we would have gotten a better dinner at a greek restaurant.

Absolute best burger in Chicago?

If in the NW burbs, "At the Tracks" makes an awesome burger. Located near the Cary train station

Single clove garlic?

The one by me is (Far NW suburbs) - perhaps Whole Foods does as well?

Lunching in the Loop

Try Potbelly Sandwich Works at the Merchandise Mart or one of their other locations. I LOVE the turkey and if omit the mayonnaise, they are fairly healthy. I always get skinny (not as much bread)

Looking for a good butcher Far NW suburbs

around the Algonquin/Cary area. Any suggestions?

A good fishmonger out here would also be awesome! I work in Niles so anywhere along that path would be great!

Thanks guys!

Glad I found another foodie forum!
