lunch in the Delta and dinner in Memphis
Suggestions for lunch on the road between Jackson, MS and Greenville? I want to introduce some New Yorkers to southern cooking but one is a vegetarian.
Also dinner in Memphis that will satisfy me (love Memphis bbq) but also the vegetarian I am traveling with?
10 days and nights on West 81st Street. Would appreciate some local intelligence to eat well
I know the first 2 posters recommend Barney Greengrass and Zabar's but I don't think you can beat the appetizing at Murray's, B'way and 89th St. The lox is fabulous as is the baked salmon but for the smoked fish of a lifetime, try the sturgeon. Also great herring with onions in cream sauce if you like that kind of thing and I definitely do. The fish is all fresh and beautiful -- moist but not greasy -- and the staff really know the art of slicing it. Yummm. I live in Brooklyn and still make the trip up there for appetizing fairly regularly.
Manhattan Chinatown with kids
Friends are in from LA and we wanted to go to Chinatown with their kids -- 3 and 6 years old, total of 9 people. Suggestions on a place where we won't have to wait long, get a good meal and that is large enough for the kids to blend into the crowd.
places to stay and eat in Washington State
I am planning a vacation for late July -- a couple of days in Seattle, backpacking on the cascade crest trail and probably also some time on the Olympic Penninsula. I have found some great places to stay and eat in the Northwest on past trips and am particularly interested in anything that would combine out of the way locations with great food anywhere in this area.
A Voce or Scarpetta?
Thanks to all, seems Scarpetta is the one. Big problem though, no reservations within a week of the big day. Other ideas??!!
A Voce or Scarpetta?
Looking for a place for a birthday dinner. We can spend $$$ on this one. It needs to have a GREAT wine list and well prepared, interesting food. Don't usually do Italian but have had some recent positive reports on A voce and Scarpeta. Thoughts?
To clairfy, we do alot of Italian but have not generally for the "event" meals. Great Italian would be welcome.
Po, Lupa or Crispo?
I have not been to Po in a few years. They had a down period IMO but I hear are back up. I think Crispo is excellent. Fantastic prosciutto and the best real Italian carbonara I have found in NYC. Many other choices as well. If you sit in the back it is a fantasy semi-grotto room that the chef/owner built himself as a hobby. A little fountain, lots of stone and strange appliances for making, slicing and preparing proscuitto adorn the walls.
Jean Georges or Chanterelle for a Special B-day Dinner?
Jean George, Jean George, Jean George... absolutely.
I have never loved Chanterelle from my first meal there the year they opened when we were served scallops with rasberries, over twenty years later and I am still confused by that one. Most recent visit was three years ago and, while not shocked by anything terrible, certainly not blown away.
Jean George, on the other hand... is to this day the site of two of the best meals I have ever had, most recently less than a year ago. Everything, the food, the room, the timing, the service, is effortless and full of pleasure. Now that is what I expect from a restaurant of that level!
foodie Dad's b-day dinner
We can go to the $100 per person range. atmosphere -- not too loud, nice room but not stuffy. They are in their 70's but very downtown, travel alot . We are looking at Bklyn options (my boro) because, I agree, we will definitely be more likely to find something to suprise them with here but also thinking dwntwn Manhattan.
Where have they been, sheesh, if it has been open more than a year and is downtown it is a good bet they have tried it.
foodie Dad's b-day dinner
My parents are serious NYC foodies who live in the Village and seem to know every new restaurant within a week of its opening. We are taking them out for my Dad's b-day and looking for something new, fun and yummy. Their taste is ecumenical; they love everything from Hearth to WD-50 as long as it is excellently prepared. Ideas??

La Boqueria, the mercado on La Rambla. We spent about an hour going from stall to stall tasting different cendors before buying the ones we liked.

Thanks to all for the advice. We leave Sunday and I hope to have some good reporting to do when I return.
San Sebastian on a Monday
We will be in San Sebastian in a few weeks and have reservations at the big 3 -- Extebarri, Akelarre and Mugaritz. Any ideas for what to do on a Monday night? None of these are open on Mondays plus we might want a day of rest... favorite tapas or other thoughts welcome. We will actually be staying outside of SB near Igueldo so out of the town proper is also an option.
Madrid Birthday
My family will be in Madrid in September where we will be dropping off my daughter for a semester in Spain. It will be her 21st birthday while we are there and we want to take her somewhere memorable to celebrate. We are looking for someplace with a special setting that has good food. Later in the trip (after she starts school) my husband and I will be doing more "foodie" things (including the Basque country and Barcelona) so this is really for her. She is an adventurous eater and has traveled a good bit but the emphasis should be on the total experience -- room, service and food together.
Any thoughts??
