Best of historic Williamsburg Taverns

Shields Tavern is nice. Go for lunch as the expense is a little less. Go in the evening to restuarants other than the taverns but go back for Fife and Drum through the streets (check schedules). Go to the Farmer's Market in the early hours on Merchants Sq. on Saturday morning. Coffee and great baked goods and other items (Goats R Us cheese is amazing).
Taverns just arent the only experience to focus on. DOG Street Pub in Merchants Sq has great beer selection, Dinner at Fat Canary is expensive but amazing.

Seafood Dives in Virginia Beach & Wiliamsburg?

I live in Williamsburg and have never had good seafood anywhere nearby. One restaurant that served raw bar fare is now closed. Tourist places are the only ones that serve seafood (Captain George, Bonefish and Red Lobster) If someone knows of something nearby please do post!

Durham NC restaurant recommends?

Wow - posted about Elmo's. I was in Durham a year ago and liked Elmo's. I am not from the area but enjoyed the meal I had. I have eaten at Magnolia also and agree the experience would be nice. Still think Elmo's had food that pleased my in-laws, 20 year old son and my husband and self.

Durham NC restaurant recommends?

Elmo's Diner..lots of breakfast items all day, but when I went I had Spinach Enhiladas. I thought the food was really diverse, good quality, served hot and varied menu. Loud inside but good food from $8 to $10 a plate..tops.

Spilled a glass of red wine on beige carpet!

Seltzer or club soda - soak it and blot with elbow grease. Reapply - might take a bottle or more.

Colosseum-Rome-Where to eat

Hostaria da Nerone - Via delle Terme di Tito, 96 Roma. We sat outside (April) and ordered pasta, pizzas and I ate artichokes and bread. It is just up the hill from the touristy spots and as we walked towards the Colosseum afterwards there was a bridge that we stopped and took pictures of the family with the Colosseum in the background. Good wine and friendly waiters set up a table for the five of us outside as they were pretty crowded that day for lunch.

1st trip to Napa and I have some questions...

Be sure and try some picnic fare from Oakville Grocery and we loved the restaurant at Domain Chandon. Although it was years back for us - the restaurant still gets good reviews. Have a great time! Both have websites.

Food Banks..do you give?

Sponsor a food drive, well publicized, for a month at your place of worship. Get a list of 4-5 needed products from your Food Bank/Pantry and ask for those in your publicity. Food stamps do not purchase personal items (sanitary items, shampoo, soap, cleaning products) so having a drive for those is also a good idea.
On a monthly basis we purchase meat/protein items - canned tuna, chicken, chili, stews, canned beans (especially when on sale) and take them. Small individual sizes work well for seniors that live alone.

Looking For Online Food Gift Suggestions

The Vermont Country Store has a selection of food and they have a cheddar (individually in wax) sampler, soups in can, maple products, sugar free syrups, cider jelly, wild rice mixes etc.

La Tienda was going to be a suggestion. They are in the city I live in and they have a small store and I always get thingsd for my parents there. Great choices of unique products.

In the freezer isle, quick meals...

Bagged frozen artichokes for pizza and pasta dishes with those frozen shrimp. I love those pot stickers too and I drizzle on a little Soy Vey over rice and some of the frozen edaname.

Quick! Thoughts on Campbells Chicken/Rice Casserole

Add some white wine, carmelized onions and a little sour cream. Deepens the flavor.

What's your "secret ingredient?"

Penzey's also got an English Rib Rub. All beef - especially grilled - benefit with this spice. Awesome on tenderloin or a burger - with just a bit of sea salt.

Blue Talon Bistro, Williamsburg-Disappointing

Have to agree. Had a disappointing dinner there tonight. Pretty friendly service, but our meal was accompanied by too many flies! Of three adult entrees, dry, flavorless and no distinct flavors would pretty much sum it up. Somebody needs to tighten things up. Used to have good food with spotty service, things have reversed unfortunately.

Williamsburg, Va. Dining Suggestions?

Quick update: Ate at Blue Talon tonight. Under done french fries, smashed potatoes raw in spots and over salted, Lamb shank was gristly, no distinctive flavor, Mahi Mahi was not flavorful and done to dryness. Flies were everywhere and swarming our food. Over $120 for 3 adults and 1 child (really great side of mac and cheese though) - definitely not a good night at Blue Talon. I cannot recommend again.

10 Homemade Pizzas

Chorizo and olive flatbread sounds great. I will make that as soon as I can. We have been making pizza for 20 years using the Wolfgang Puck recipe for dough. We have doubled it, baked and frozen it, made calzones and stromboli with it. Preheating the oven well and the olive oil are key. Whenever you put too much on or don't have a good hot oven, you won't have as good results. We also use some perforated pizza pans. My kids do not like pizzas from anywhere else...except Giordano's in Chicago last week and Lombardi's in NY.

Williamsburg, Va. Dining Suggestions?

Jamestown Pie is on Jamestown Road with benches out front, and it does have great pies, but they changed a little with new ownership a few years ago. The bumbleberry pie was to die for but then I ordered one later and the filling was sparse. The chicken pot pie was good too.

Myrtle Beach, SC - OK Hounds - Lets update the rec's for MB

Hope this is in time for others as the summer winds down. We stay in Litchfield, near Pawley's Island. The best pizza is hidden behind an office/shopping building just past the BI-Lo on 17. Pastaria 811 at 111 Lakes at Litchfield Drive. Go around to the back and they will be packed. We never miss ordering at least 3 pizzas to enjoy with a big bottle of chianti! Check Pastaria811.com for menus and directions. We usually get thick crust (Abruzzi) and their New York thin crust style too.

New to Hampton Roads

Not sure exactly where you are but in Williamsburg, Ichiban for sushi has been recommended by many but I have not tried it, In Norfolk, burgers at Kelly's Tavern in the Ghent section. I love the Mexican food in Williamsburg at La Tolteca (either location). The #17 with a cheese enchilada and chicken burrito - can't go wrong - been ordering that forever. Upscale in Williamsburg is Fat Canary, great entrees and appetizers and desserts. White tablecloth with an open kitchen and friendly wait staff. Call early for reservations. Hope someone posts a good seafood restaurant, lived here awhile and can't recommend one. Need to try the BBQ at Pierce's off the exit for 199 from 64. An institution.

Williamsburg Restaurants

Lived here 15 years and still crave Pierce's BBQ. Fat Canary is a little expensive and hard to get reservations if not calling ahead. A fun experience can be had at the bar (for a party of 1-3) have an appetizer and an apple martini. Can't remember the bartenders name but he always recalls a face and is super friendly, but lets you eat. Profiteroles for dessert! Saw one post about New Town. There is the Thaipot Restaurant there. Really good food and quiet experience with good service. Can't really recomend Trellis anymore. Spotty service the past few times and the waiter couldn't tell what the breads were that he brought to the table. For the money and location, Fat Canary or Blue Talon.

Smoque lately?

We ate at Smoque this past weekend. We started just out the door around 630p. We grabbed a menu and had prepared our order. We were at the cashier in under 25 minutes. Our food came out pretty fast too. Crowded, but three (owners and staff) were going through the line to count your party and try to make seating for those staying. They even called a cab for us when we were ready to go. After a lifetime of NC BQ and now Virginia BBQ, this was an awesome smoky experience.
