Gluten Free Potato Buds: YUCK!!!!!!!!

hmm. What scares me is the fact that something called potato buds actually has gluten in it that needs to be taken out.

What's happened to donuts?

Wendy's no longer owns Tim Hortons and has not for a while. It is back to being a canadian company.

Joe's meat market, Providence

I walked in and walked out of here. The place is filthy and run by people that obviously do not care a lick about the property.

Sunday dinner in Providence?

I was going to say, this seems like dated commentary. Plenty of restaurants not only have the talent but the product on Sundays to produce quality cuisine.

gluten free?

2.2 million people in the US have it alone. And that was from a study published on '03 so you can be sure more have it. My wife has it an she is not from Irish stock.

As for you disagreeing...ok.

Mini Chowhound stories...

thats a cute story, but be careful how attached your cat gets to leeks. While milder, they are part of the onion family which is toxic to cats (dogs too)..Onions contain a substance (N-propyl disulphide) which destroys red blood cells in the cat/dogs. This is present in leeks as well

Loie Fuller... FAIL (long)

here is where i really disagree with you. when you say it is not the duty/responsibilty of a customer...

If a customer goes on a review site and lambasts a restaurant, they are taking responsibility for whatever negative perceptions that people take away from it. Therefore, they have a responsibility to ensure that what they are saying is being framed in the right context. That is just good common sense and what anyone would expect from a community such as this.

As for Jennifer's experience at LF's, it is definitely out of the ordinary both from a service and food perspective. I do hope that Jennifer will try it again. The owners are wonderful people and would certainly take an interest in knowing about this. And as a business owner herself, I hope that Jennifer would contact the restaruant and let them know. Certainly she would want to know personally if people had issues with her business, not learn about it on a message board.

High-end places in Providence?

In addition to Gracie's and Chez pascal, consider New Rivers

Mill's Tavern and Baccaro are also quite good.

Matunuck Oyster Bar

If executed well, this menu fills a great void in this state. The seafood restuarants here are woefully pathetic. cant wait to try this place.

Best brunch in Providence?

I am tired of people trashing the city ALL the time. There is plent ythere if you get out of the rut your mindset is in...

Seeing as how all the places listed below are in Providence, I consider them all part of the city. The city is not that big. These are all places I have gone to with great results.

West Side:
Nicks
Julians
Loie Fuller

City:
CAV

East Side:

Red Stripe
Z Bar
Amy's Cafe

Elmwood:
Liberty Elm

Good bagel/biali in RI?

Palmieri's Bakery on Ridge St in Providence has the best bagels by far.

Salvation in Providence?

I would do Broadway Bistro...not only because it is awesome but also since you are such a fan of Salvation Cafe in Newport.

The chef/owner of Broadway Bistro (Patrick Lowney) is the former chef of the Salvation Cafe...food and price points are top notch.

Palmieri's Cafe at DePasquale Square (PVD)

They do not any location other than West Side. Both are in Federal Hill specifically...

That aside, they are excellent as well as a great example of people from the neighborhood taking over a business and making it thrive...

Pickles Deli, Glastonbury, CT

Totally agree here. Bread goes stale so quick. Why not contract with Crown in West Hartford who have their own in house bakery and make excellent rye and pumpernickel? This whole "Flown in from NYC" crap is just marketing hype

Pot au Feu, Providence

The bistro is the only part that still open. Upstairs has been closed for over a year. Only open for special parties. Bistro is excellent as always.

Providence, RI: SKIP El Rancho Grande!!

Whenever we go there are other mexican patrons. And honestly, I dont what the hell that has to do with the quality or authenticity of the food.

I am not sure why it takes a while either. I do know the owner is there everytime I am and I wonder if she is the only one making the food.

Providence, RI: SKIP El Rancho Grande!!

Really? I go once a week therabouts...i have never experienced anything like what you experienced. My tamales have been moist, as have the tacos I enjoyed.

Perhaps an off time for you? I am not sure that warrants a huge "SKIP", especially when you are passing through and cant try it again.

Providence food shopping.

How does this Yankee Spirits in Sturbridge compare to the one in Attleboro?

I am thinking it must be better for you to travel farther, just curious though..

Dinning in Providence

Either have we...I sent a letter to them, hopefully will get a response.

Dinning in Providence

I love Chez Pascal's food, but the service is something else. Recently I went with my wife for a special dinner. We were seated promptly for our reservation and watered. 15 minutes go by and no one came by to take a drink order, tell us they will be right there, give us a nod from the other end of the room, anything...

So we got up and went over to the hostess, who never even looked up from her phone conversation for 3 more minutes. My wife and I looked at each other and realized this was the way the tone was going to be for the whole meal, and walked out. We went to Gracie's where we had an excellent meal/service.

It bums us out because we do really like Chez Pascal, but now have been burned...

Wine shops in Providence or surrounding areas?

When they start demolishing buildings to have surface parking lots, its a problem. There is plenty of parking, enough said. Great thing about Providence is that it is a walkable city.

And yes Eno is still around, does pretty well from my conversations with the proprietors.

Wine shops in Providence or surrounding areas?

Are you kidding? There is tons and tons of parking in Downcity. On street, lots, you name it.

Grown Up Bar in Providence RI

Loie Fuller's, The Avery

HELPNOW Rhode Islanders Last try for picks Blackstone Valley & nearby

Well, Atlantic Salmon would be native to this region, but no smokehouses I know of in RI. Maine has about 10 or so..I know of one in Nantucket as well, but as far as RI goes, I dont know of one.

HELPNOW Rhode Islanders Last try for picks Blackstone Valley & nearby

I dont know whats worse, you for continually asking the same questions. Or me for answering them. However I will answer some of the newer questions you have...

Smokehouses: No. There are no smokehouses in RI that I know of.

Chocalate: Garrison Confections is a great chocalatier in the Providence area. However, they have closed their retail shop in Providence and are focusing more on their online business, etc. I would go to http://www.garrisonconfections.com and either write /call them as to where their chocalate can be found.

As for your other questions, you have gotten a ton of info from people that care about food and helping out a visitor to RI. Please take some of the advice. You are staying in an area that is not exactly a bastion of food greatness. If you find some great stuff that we dont know about, I am sure we would all love to hear about it. Have a nice visit.

Places to eat in Providence

Please, please dont take this as being unkind or anything, but I have to inquire as to whether you did some searching on the site before posing this question? There have been quite a bit of posts like this in the past 6 weeks or so asking about Providence lately with some really good answers. A quick search finds them all:

Oak in Providence

I agree with you on all except the seafood. We really dont have great seafood places in Providence.

gluten free?

You would be amazed at how many people do though :)

Also prevalent are people that eliminate gluten from their diet before the test, causing a false negative.

gluten free?

Did you ever get tested for celiac?

gluten free?

You might want to look into the research over the last 5 years or so. Regular vinegar is acceptable due to the distillation process. From the U of Chicago CD Website:

"Distilled white vinegar is safe to consume on the gluten-free diet. Distilled vinegars are gluten-free because the distillation process filters out the large gluten proteins so that they do not pass through to the end product. Therefore, the finished liquid is gluten-free. Patients with celiac disease should not be concerned about distilled white vinegar or foods such as pickles, which may contain it. The exception to this rule is MALT VINEGAR, which is not distilled, and therefore is not safe to consume."
