What would Emily Post do? [moved from New Orleans]
I bet everyone else who could hear these douches were secretly applauding you. I think that their rudeness is what's rude, not your response. Where were you? We were at Root tonight, had a nice time, and thankfully no jerks there. Driving home afterward, on the other hand...
Soon, soon, things will settle down!
New Orleans One Dinner
Is the Bon Ton open on Monday nights? Herbsaint, MiLa, Coquette, La Petite Grocery?
Chris DeBarr leaving Green Goddess!
His last dinner will be May 13. The good news, though, is that he's opening a place in Mid-City (in the American Can Company, probably where the Olive Branch was?) which will be bigger and close to where I work! The bad news is that the FQ is (potentially) losing a great restaurant.
Now word on if the restaurant will continue without him, yet...

Sunday Brunch -- Commander's or Atchafalaya?
FYI, Central Grocery is closed Sunday and Monday, so you'll want to get your muffaletta (if you want to get it from there) on Saturday.
Three Lunches (Weds/Thurs/Fri)
I agree, I've done it on a workday lunch break. Now, I wasn't able to drive in, park, eat and drive back to midcity in an hour, but definitely could in less than two.
New Orleans in August (seeking advice)
It's all about expectations- if you go in with accurate ones, you can probably work with the situation!
Where Should We Avoid?
Avoid: any place that has plates of food on display outside the restaurants or people huckstering you to come in.
New Orleans in August (seeking advice)
Commanders and Galatoire have the same dress code, that's why linen and seersucker are so popular in the summertime!
Yeah, it's hot, but just move slow and stay in the shade. Drink water and expect to sweat. Most places are air conditioned, so you should be OK.
Another "Please Critique My Weekend Itinerary" Thread
I wouldn't waste a dinner on Luke. Maybe explore Uptown- Dante's, Brigtsen's, Boucherie, Coquette... If you're having brunch at LPG, you can make a day of exploring Magazine Street, shopping, stopping for drinks and snacks, etc.
Mid-May visit: How do I find which restaurants are running specials?
Most places with a prix fixe lunch does them at least M-F. (August, MiLa, Emeril's, Coquette...) I know Coquette does a nightly chef's tasting that's really reasonable (I think $40-45 for 4 courses?)
San Francisco Hound Coming to New Orleans: Please Critique My List for My First Visit!!!
My personal preferences would be as follows: Go to Herbsaint instead of Cochon, and maybe plan a cocktail/snack break at Cochon Butcher. R'evolution isn't open yet and has been fraught with delayed opening for like a year now. I'd cross that right off. Lilette, eh. Rather go to Coquette or La Petite Grocery. Sylvain is a great choice for the FQ, and the Three Muses is a great place to drink, eat, and listen to music. And of course you can move down Frenchmen throughout the night.
Definitely go for Casamento's over Acme, take your muff from Central Grocery home with you (but plan ahead- they are closed Sunday and Monday!), and I think the best "old timer" for lunch would be Galatoire's. Johnny's in the Quarter is good for poboys, as is Parkway. Or the RB at Parasol's.
Cocktails/Bars- go to the Avenue Pub in the evening for awesome beer and sit out on the Balcony (go upstairs) which overlooks St. Charles. French 75 and Cure for sure. Also try Belloq in Lee Circle (can walk or take the streetcar to it after the Avenue Pub, and try some food at Chef Domenique's Tamarind) and Bar Tonique on North Rampart. I am also partial to the Carousel Bar at Hotel Monteleone.
Coffee: there's a new place on Magazine Street called Velvet, which is supposed to be AMAZING. They also pull a decent espresso at Angelo Brocato's in Mid City, where you can go after a poboy at Parkway and also enjoy lemon ice and/or cannoli and/or spumoni. If you go to a regular coffee shop with multiple locations, I recommend Community Coffee's CC Coffeehouses over PJ's.
OK, that's all the opinionating I've got for now!
Looking for great steaks!
Well, the Ruth's Chris here is the original one, yes? But Mr. John's is definitely the best.
Sazeracs ALL AROUND! (trip report)
Ahhh, Felipe's, my not-so-secret guilty pleasure. I get lunch from Felipe's at least once a week. May not be authentic, but it's fresh, fast, and tasty. Glad you enjoyed!
Best Bakery in New Orleans area...thoughts?

The Cajun Seafood that is on S. Broad at Washington?
86 year old father needs bland food in NO. Is it possible?
That's great! I'm glad he had wonderful time.
Saturday Morning Bachelor Party Brunch
Katie's in midcity has bottomless mimosas and bloody marys- I haven't checked out the brunch though, yet.
any new veggie treats?
Ooh, yes. These are all excellent suggestions.
Also just would like to note that when we went to August over the holidays, I had the regular chef's tasting menu and my husband had the tasting of vegetables and it was terrific.
any new veggie treats?
Carmo: http://cafecarmo.com/ in the CBD, and Magasin (Vietnamese food) Uptown.
the ever popular "how's this itinerary look" post
Where's Frankie & Johnny's? I haven't heard of it. In the Magazine Street area there are MANY awesome places to eat. Around Washington: Coquette, hands down. Around Louisiana: Atchafalaya. Around Napoleon: La Petite Grocery or Magasin. You've also got Bistro Daisy, Lillette, (and Boulingny, a cocktail bar attached), Salu, Appoline, Mahoney's, Guy's Poboys, Martinique Bistro...
Best Up and Coming Chef/Owners
Beard nominations just came out the other day, 4 of the 5 best chefs in the South category were from New Orleans: Justin Devallier (La Petite Grocery), John Harris (Lillette), Alon Shaya, and Tory McPhail of CP, though I'm pretty sure in his case he doesn't have an ownership stake.
The Maurepas chef? The husband/wife team behind MiLa?
Summer Visit to New Orleans - Feedback Sought
Out of your choices for Wednesday dinner, I'd choose Dante's Kitchen...For Thursday lunch at Mr. B's, be sure to get the BBQ shrimp...For Friday dinner, go to Brigstens.
What are you doing for lunch on Friday? I'd suggest Green Goddess or Cochon Butcher if you want downtown, or Commanders Palace or Boucherie for uptown.
Enjoy!
40th Birthday week in NOLA--Frequent visitor looking for a great mix of old and new
I may rely on other parent types to answer that one.
40th Birthday week in NOLA--Frequent visitor looking for a great mix of old and new
I would go to Root for dinner and if you wish (and if they are back doing music, which just got approved by the city council last week) go to Bacchanal for after dinner music and wine.
CP and Galatoires both have their fans, they are both great for a special lunch. Both old school and highly regarded. I personally prefer CP, but I doubt you can go wrong with either.
Freret St. has Midway Pizzaria, a deep dish pizza place, and High Hat, which has great catfish. Ancora doesn't do lunch during the week, I think. The Company Burger has pretty good veggie burgers (so I've heard)
Nawlins Trip Advice
Ar Herbsaint there's this housemade spaghetti/ guincale/fried poached egg thing that's awesome. The gumbo is awesome too- as is everything else. Coquette- both the a la carte and the chef's tasting menu is great, so go with your instincts. I'd chose Brigtsens and Green Goddess. (Green Goddess by MILES)
NYC Foodie First Time (Birthday) Trip to New Orleans April 11-16
Yes, either CG or Cochin Butcher. Or both. CG can be brought home much easily, I'd wager.
