Where to get a Bamix Immersion Blender in Toronto? Besides Williams-Sonoma.
WS calls it a 'Bamix Professional'. I think it's this one:
http://www.amazon.ca/Bamix-Gastro-200-Immersion-Blender/dp/B001R4BBWE/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1293652692&sr=8-2-fkmr1
There's a guy on eBay that has sold them for as low as $120 US, but he seems unwilling to ship to Canada.
Where to get a Bamix Immersion Blender in Toronto? Besides Williams-Sonoma.
Hi,
Does anyone know if I can get hold of a Bamix Immersion blender anywhere in Toronto besides at Williams-Sonoma? I considered buying the professional model in the states last week for $180 but decided to wait until coming back to Toronto. Big mistake - it's $260 here!
Thanks.
Prix Fixe lunch deals?
Thanks for the help. I think we might give Bouley a go. Are reservations easy?
Prix Fixe lunch deals?
Hi there,
Last time I went to New York (about 5 years ago) a lot of the best restaurant in town seemed to have some great 3 course lunches available in the $20-35 range. I haven't been able to find a list of places that offer such deals currently. Can anyone help me out with some recommendations? Preferably somewhere that has great food and looks pretty fancy.
Also, can someone explain the current situation at Jean Georges with respect to their prix fixe lunch? The website doesn't exactly make it clear...
Thanks,
Dan

Using dried bay leave in place of fresh
Hello,
Roughly how many dried bay leaves should be used per fresh bay leaf called for in a recipe to have a similar effect?
Thanks,
Dan
Bombay mix in Toronto?
Hi, does anyone know if/where I can find Bombay mix in Toronto, preferably downtown?
Thanks.
Napa Valley wine tours?
Hi,
I'll be in San Francisco for a few days next month and would like to spend a day in Napa Valley visiting some wineries and sampling the wines. A tour would seem to be the best option but there are so many tour companies operating. Can anyone provide recommendations about good/bad companies? Is there any difference? How much should we expect to pay for a good tour? Thanks,
Dan
Sushi downtown Toronto. Suggestions?
Japango is very good.

how closely should the pan and burner diameters match?
Hi,
I'm thinking about getting a new saute pan because my current 3 qt one is a bit small and I tend to end up overfilling it. The current one is 9.5 inches across the base which fits my stovetop exactly. If I get one that is 11 inches in diameter, am I going to notice a big difference in the heating around the edge where the pan isn't directly over the burner, if I go with something like copper or aluminium?
Thanks.
Where To Find Spot Prawns
Don't know how long they keep alive, but yes you can just throw them into the pan. They protest surprisingly little when being fried alive as compared to when being doused in wine or handled. They'll live for a minute or so though and continue to twitch, if that bothers you.
Where To Find Spot Prawns
I picked some up from Bill's yesterday, I think there were 16 and 15 of them were very lively, with one deceased, not sure if it died before or after they sold it to me. They were very good.
what's good around Bay & College?
Hi there,
Just moved over to this part of town. Anything good foodwise (restaurants, bakeries, anything at all) in the area, say 5-10 minute walk?
Thanks.
White and brown scallops - what's the difference (not wet vs dry!)?
Hi,
I went to buy some scallops today and the selection included some that were very light, and others that had a more sandy colour. They are well dry scallops. The fishmonger didn't know the difference and neither did I so I bought some of each. The whiter ones were much sweeter and more tender, whereas the brown were a lot more meaty, and seemed much less pleasant to me. I wonder if anyone knows what the actual difference between these types is? They all smelt good, and were all apparently freshly caught.
Thanks,
Dan
Venison sirloin
Yep - they're steaks, one is about 9 oz the other about 12. Thanks for the help!
Venison sirloin
Hi,
I just bought a couple of (extremely dark) venison sirloins. I've never cooked these before, so does anyone have any tips? I was going to go with the way that I've found works best for beef, which is a couple of minutes on one side on a high heat, then flip over and put into a 500 degree oven for another couple of minutes. Then rest the meat whilst I whip up a little red wine sauce.
Does this sound like a good cooking method of venison? I assume as it isn't very fatty. that it should be cooked fast.
Thanks,
Dan
nam pla/fish sauce
Thank you all. I went to T&T (quite an adventure!) and picked up some Golden Boy. It worked nicely.
nam pla/fish sauce
Hi,
I'm hoping to try an 'authentic' Thai recipe later today - does anyone know where I can pick up some good nam pla in Toronto? Preferably downtown. Are there any Thai supermarkets?
Thanks.
Great Sushi Restaurant at Spadina & Bloor - Yuki
Yuki is ok. As you say, probably the best along Bloor, although occasionally Sushi on Bloor can be alright.
Yuki did serve me some terrible grisly chicken once. And they seem to put even more salt in their food than most. But they're quite good value and most things I've had have been good for the price.
New Sushi Restaurant on Harbord?
I went a week ago, for lunch. I had chirashi (my standard choice) which was very pleasant; a cut above the offerings on Bloor, a cut below Japango. It's a little expensive for lunch (minimum $10 before tax and tip, compared to ~$7 on Bloor) which is an issue if you're a student like me, but if I had a proper job I imagine I wouldn't mind so much.
The decor was pleasant enough, but we were the only two people there (it was around 3 pm, I don't know how they fare at peak hours) and the waiter didn't seem to be able to hold it together very well even with such a small crowd. He was fairly slow and inattentive and made some errors.
They were also playing jazz which really jarred with the atmosphere and struck me as a fairly silly choice.
The best butter and eggs available?
Thanks guys. I'll have a look next time I'm around SLM. I used Organic Meadow last time and it was very nice. I'm honestly not sure that I could tell them difference between different butters and eggs when used in baking, but I'd like to investigate.
The best butter and eggs available?
Hi there,
I'm looking for the best butter and eggs I can get hold of in Toronto for some baking. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Cava Vs. Torito
I've been to both and I preferred Torito. As I recall the plates are about the same size at both, and all roughly consistent with what you'd get in Spain. I'm afraid I can't remember much else about them.
Sushi restaurant around Yonge and Lawrence
Went last night. Decent fish. Overpriced and bad service. I had chirashi ('Kaisen don B') and it was tiny and certainly didn't look like $25 worth of fish. There was no soup in sight and when I asked for tea only I was given a cup and not the person I was eating with. Certainly no Japango.
Sushi restaurant around Yonge and Lawrence
Hi,
I was in Japango the other day talking with the waiter and he recommended a sushi place to me around Yonge and Lawrence. I'll be around there tomorrow but I've completely forgotten the name. I think it was a Japanese name, beginning with an 's', any ideas?
Thanks.
Transport to/from The French Laundry from/to San Francisco
I'm afraid I have deceived you all. The reality is far more shameful. We're students. Not particularly dirty either. And probably can't realistically afford to eat here, but as we probably won't be in the neighbourhood again...
Transport to/from The French Laundry from/to San Francisco
Actually we're fairly poor dirty hippies. I just like food. Maybe the bus and ferry is doable for lunch...
Transport to/from The French Laundry from/to San Francisco
Sadly we are dirty hippies who don't drive.
Transport to/from The French Laundry from/to San Francisco
Hi,
I may be going to San Francisco for a week at the end of August and if I can persuade my other half, will try to get a table at The French Laundry. Could someone let me know what the transportation options are like when coming from/going to San Francisco? I assume if we have dinner a cab ride back is the only option? Roughly how much are we talking here? If we go for lunch are there public transport alternatives?
Thanks.
