going to Jerusalem...taking recommendations!

Hi all -
Going to Israel for 10 days with my husband and 9 month old son. Been there many times, but not since 2007! Looking for recs of places that would be newish (i.e. opened since then) and particularly good - its ok if its expensive, we're on vacation! Also, if anyone ever had a terrible experience anywhere with a baby....let me know and we'll avoid it.

We do keep kosher, so its always exciting to eat in Jerusalem at the places that offer ethnic cuisine that we wouldn't be able to get kosher in the states.

Thanks!
Tarsky

Dad is an observant Jew. I am an observant Chowhound. Where can we eat in New York City and both be satisfied?

did anyone suggest clubhouse cafe? its meat, its delicious (my non-jewish coworkers gave it rave reviews) and lunchtime is acutally quiet (not sure if open sunday for lunch?) if you each order an entree, its under $20 a person, but you really should get the duck empanada appetizers, they are amazing! 46th btw broadway and 6th, so not far from where you are meeting.

Estihana, Manhattan Good, Bad or Ugly??????????

nothing wrong with the place, not great, not bad. i've eaten many of the chicken dishes, my husband usually gets a beef dish, and they are always totally fine. i wouldnt be worried about the dinner at all. its a very tiny space, though, and will likely be crowded if its at dinner time...unless you guys are taking over the whole place.

Anybody go to Kosherfest?

Tulkoff is a Baltimore company that makes (IMO) the BEST horseradish ever. In Baltimore, that is all anyone eats with gefilte fish! Glad to hear they have expanded their line into interesting sauces, i"ll keep an eye out....

Kosher Food (Maybe Not Quite Chow) In Port Authority

personally, its all about the flying saucers. i know there is not one nutrional ingredient in there, but its definitely less than 800 cal and it brings me way back to my youth! i agreea bout cinnabon. if i am going to waste those calories, i'd stop at kosher DD and get a muffin.

Trader Joe's Pizza Dough to lose kosher certification

could be that they looked to provide the NJ store (are you in bergen county?) with a kosher dough....TJ's is very aware that they have frustrated many kosher consumers!

a new TJ's is about to open on the UWS of manhattan right after yom kippur. i am curious to see what that location will carry. maybe the glatt kosher meat i have heard about at other TJ's!

frozen yogurt that is NOT pinkberry/red mango in midtown west?

i know this a mundane question, and i found an old post about it, but it was more than 3 years back, so i decided to post again. Anyone familiar with a place (anywhere, really) that serves frozen yogurt that is not a pinkberry/red mango store that is in the hell's kitchen vicinity?

Kosher Food at Newark Liberty Airport (EWR)

definitely nothing (other than random ice cream or something that you might find) in PHL. pick up a sandwich from one of the center city places (mama's vegetarian felafel, if you want my vote) before you head to the airport.

Toronto Kosher Downtown?

Thanks! we found Oasis cafe (thanks to someone who gave explicit instructions on how to find it on a shamash posting from year ago - in case anyone need to know in the future....look for the entrance to the exchange concourse on the southeast corner of York and Adelaide...) and it was just what we needed. Since we were heading to a wedding that night...we wanted somethign quick during our few hours of touring.

Toronto Kosher Downtown?

Hi - going to be in toronto for a day. I know most of the Kosher places are on Bathurst, and that may be where I end up heading, but I will be downtown doing some quick touristy stuff - is there anything kosher downtown?

Mike's Dairy Place

pizza is delicious, pastas are also great, especially the homemade stuff. i personally love the mac and cheese. however, it seats around 15 people and its very small with your local pizza shop ambience...not quite a restaurant. would be hard to sit at a table with more than 4-5 ppl, max.

Trader Joe's Pizza Dough to lose kosher certification

well, consumers in minneapolis (friends of friends) have already reported that their stores are carrying new dough, with no hashgacha. some stores still have the old stock. TJ's is switching to a different company that makes the dough - its not that the KVH is taking their certification away, TJ's just isnt carrying the same dough anymore

Trader Joe's Pizza Dough to lose kosher certification

I just heard this news from a friend in D.C. A friend of hers called TJ's and got the following response:

She called TJ's and found out that they had to move to a new company. (She asked why, and he said that he didn't know but it could be any number of reasons, like keeping up with demand, etc) TJ's always prefers that their products be kosher supervised, and asked the new pizza dough co. if they could be under kosher supervision, and they will see if they can work with a supervision company, but the transition is already done about a month ago, and since then, the dough has not been under supervision. They said that if we want to "rally" we should send in notes on their website, that they want to hear from us.

So, if TJ's apparently is responsive to kosher consumer pressure, and they want the kosher consumers to email in....we should! I know for those of us who live in NY and can get kosher pizza anytime, the dough may not be as important, but for my friends and fam who live in places without (good) kosher pizza, TJ's pizza dough is key!
Just wanted to spread the word. TJ customer inquiry form is here:

rocky gap resort passover

i have never been to either program, but I am originally from the area and I know a bit about both. Rocky Gap is a bit of a lower-tier hotel, and may be a bit of a frummer crowd, but i am sure an MO fam would be just fine there.

I have heard AMAZING reviews about the Chesapeake program! I know the caterer, he is a great guy, and very trustworthy. Its a bit pricey, but the hotel is new, apparently gorgeous, and people just rave about the program.

Amazing new Indian Glatt Kosher Meat Restaurant opened in Manhattan under OK

we were there on purim, actually, for our dinner. granted, they had been only open a week, so i am willing to cut them a bit of slack. service was extremely slow, but the food was pretty good. personally, i think Shalom Bombay is better, and am VERY much looking forward to their NYC outpost!
There was nothing WRONG with the food at Dashkin, but i just did not think it was outstanding. I am a huge fan of Chennai (86th and 1st) and I would forgo the meat option to eat the veggie stuff there over this place. But, maybe as they figure out the kosher stuff a bit more....things may improve?

asian cookbook for kosher cook - vegetarian or regular?

(i know i should post this on the kosher board, but my husband reads that board regularly and I am trying to buy him a present!)

my husband is a HUGE fan of asian cuisine - thai and japanese more than chinese. I would like to buy him a cookbook for Hannukah - either a thai cookbook or a general asian one. I have read through the various suggestions on these boards, so I am not looking for a cookbook suggestion.

My question is, for those more experienced cooking asian food than I am: as kosher cooks, are we better off with a vegetarian cookbook, and then we can add meat to the recipes if we choose with a little improvising? or are we better off with a 'normal' cookbook, making substitutions when necessary...? i just havent cooked enough asian food to know, so i will appreciate any input anyone has.

thanks

cafe shira in bala cynwyd?

Does anyone know if cafe shira is still open? i found a website, but when I called, it said that the number was disconnected!

I am looking for a place to to on saturday night for dinner - by default it looks like we are going to end up at one of the kosher veggie chinese places, as nothing else seems to be open on Sat nite. We will be in center city and don't feel like driving to the northeast.

Thanks
