Sultan's Tent - Calgary - Anyone been lately?

HAHA, the last time I went was in December of last year. (so not super recent) My friend from out of town wanted to go and so I took him. I must say it was good. We had their cornish hen and it was tender with plenty of dates and nuts which gave it a really nice sweet taste without being too sweet. I loved the atmosphere, the booths were plush with pillows and felt very private and very comfortable. I swear I would have just easily fell asleep in their booth being full of food and in a comfortable spot. They seem to really play the Moroccan feel in there- our waitress brought over a really cool looking bowl and kettle to wash our hands at the table. I can see it being a great place for date nights or small groups of people. My friend really liked it and overall I had good service and food was delicious.

Hope that helps!

Dallas Market Center/World Trade Centre - Where to eat?

We'll be going to Dallas for about a week for work, and will be around the Dallas Market Center/World Trade Centre and my hotel is the Crowne Plaza Market Center.

I have a feeling we'll be renting a car since I find Dallas isn't as pedestrian friendly as some other cities. But if anyone knows where we can go eat in walking distances from the hotel or where we'll be working, we're up for it!

If not, what are your "must go to places" for food in Dallas? Price is not a factor, I'm willing to eat anything as long as it's good.

Thanks everyone!

30 Hour Layover in Hong Kong

Hello Chowhounders!

I'm going to Hong Kong this weekend and I have a 30 hour layover before I cross over to the Mainland. I was wondering what places I should hit within those 30 hours that would be well worth going.
I have a couple places in mind:

1) Yung Kee for their roasted duck.
2) Australian Dairy Company for their egg sandwiches
...... and that's all I got.....

If you have any suggestions that you think are well trying out, please let me know. Money is no object, cheap or expensive it doesn't matter as long as it's good.
Also, my hotel is in Jordan, but I'm willing to travel around Hong Kong to eat some good delicious food.

Thanks for your help!

Chinese in Calgary

Go to Szechuan Resturant at 414 16 Ave NW (beside the Co-op Wine and Spirits with that huge parking lot). They have a lot of similar dishes to Delicious Country (but I think Szechuan Restaurant is better). Their spicy eggplant dish there is really good as well as their double cooked spicy pork (Hui Guo Ro).

Organic Canola/Vegetable Oil in Calgary

Hmm. I did by a 1 litre organic Olive Oil at Market 17 in the Casel Marche condo complex on 17th Avenue S.W just west of Crowchild Avenue (literally just on the other side of Crowchild on 17th, can't miss it). I would think they would have organic Canola but you can always call and ask ahead of time.

Famous HK Style Lap Cheong in Vancouver

Thanks for the input everyone! I'm quite interested in trying out the ones from Dollar Meats and the Parker Place BBQ and tasting the difference between the two and will make note to buy the ones that hang on the wall too.

Thanks for the lead! I'll look up Parker Place and see what BBQ stores are there. It must be good if people from Hong Kong are taking it back to Hong Kong right? :)

Famous HK Style Lap Cheong in Vancouver

The hubs and I will be going over to Vancouver over the long weekend and we've heard rumours of some pretty damn good Lap Cheong (Dried Chinese Sausages) that are made and sold in Vancouver. Apparently it's from a family of Lap Cheong makers in Hong Kong (whom apparently is well known and quite wealthy from making Lap Cheong) and their son or daughter moved to Vancouver to open shop.

We can't remember the name of the store or the Lap Cheong maker as this was in an article that we've read awhile back.

We've heard to people flying in from the rest of the country buying stock of these sausages but for the life of me can't figure out the name. We plan on buying stocks of it to bring back for friends in Calgary.

If anyone knows anything please let me know! We greatly appreciate it!

Pumpkins for Roasting? (Calgaryj)

The Japanese variety (green and short) are 0.99/LB at T&T (the Country Hills location). I was just there yesterday and saw quite a few. I would suggest you get those to do your pumpkin soup, they're full of flavour and will definitely last during roasting since they quite hard- even cut up.

Best in Calgary when you are under the weather / freezing

Any of the individual stews at Seoul Korean BBQ- like the Kamjaitang (Might have misspelled but it's basically pork bone and potato soup that has a bit of a spicy kick to it)!

AND Hot Pot! Forbidden City in Pacific Mall has Hot Pot dinners now for $21.99 per person, if you go there after 8:30 pm it's about $18.99 per person. All you can eat, with lots of choices for soup base.

Chowhound Board Challenge! Fantastic meals under $8!

Awww.... I'm pretty sure I had was pork belly because I remember a lot of the fat dripping out. Maybe they gave you a leaner piece of meat? I know I went back two days ago to get it again but they didn't have it so I'm sure they do rotate like you said. I know in Chinese (with my wonderful husband being able to translate) said the Chinese name for this particular bun is "The Tiger Bites the Pig" cute huh? That and I'm starting to think that the English translation didn't mention the "belly" part. But it's that cut of meat though...... I'll double check it again when I go back ;)

Where to buy: Tart Rings/Cake rings in in Calgary/Edmonton/Red Deer

Another place to find bakeware which I thought was kinda odd was Winners. The other day I saw all these bread pans, tart pans, muffin pans, cake pans, ... all at Winners.

Evidently they're not one to carry the same stock all the time, but at least it's worth checking out. The prices were quite decent too. Cheaper than the William Sonoma in Chinook (which if you haven't gone you can try there too...but be aware of paying the price) .

Calgary court restaurant

HAHA alley! Sorry! That baked pork chop is addicting. Honestly, it took me awhile to off of that addiction and try to branch out to other parts of the menu. Right now I'm hooked on their Dan Dan Noodles that they have with it's own special flyer (off the menu) and they have a new type of pork chop that is on a sizzling plate with an egg-like sauce... ohhh *drool had that twice since it came out. AND honestly, there's a reason why they're busier than other parts of Chinatown. Let's be honest, they're fast, cheap and good. Food is always fresh, and I've never had a problem with anything so far. The other day I bought their chilli oil to take home too! (Since i know they make it themselves, the waitress gave me a fresh batch) AND AND!! I've even seen their employees eat there on their day off! So you know they use fresh ingredients! :)

Calgary Restaurant's for Wedding Reception??

Teatro's Opera Room is really fantastic, known a few brides that have had weddings there and are all impressed by the food and service. The only thing is I know they're limited in space so better make sure they can actually cater 100 guests. A few other ones I've known off that have done weddings is Rouge (more French cuisine) and The Ranche I heard is also quite nice with great food and location- again may have to call to see if they can cater 100 people. Honestly, it's going to be hard to cater 100 people with a $3000 budget. You're looking at $30.00/ per person not including drinks which I know from most brides I've talked too (I work in the wedding industry so this is info from other brides I work with)- you're looking between $40-55 a head not including drinks. If anything see if some of these restaurants offer a corkage fee, it may be cheaper than purchasing wine and drinks directly from them. I know some corkage fees are about $10- $15 per bottle which is probably still cheaper than purchasing it from the restaurant. At least that way you can shop around for wine.

Han's (Cgy): Handover complete

Sorry Felix, it must frustrating to travel to Calgary to eat at Hans and be disappointed that this place is closed. Why don't you give them a call first before you go to make sure their open. I haven't gone there yet since piano boy posted the article, so I can't confirm anything but here is their number (403) 263-5667. Hopefully they'll be more consistent.

OH thanks piano boy! I've been trying to get there a few times and they're always closed. Then when I read the paper I was so sad. But this is great news, hopefully the current owners can keep up with it because it's such a gem here in Calgary, it would be such a shame to lose it....

It's Official! Read the Chinese newspaper and Han's is for sale. I knew something is wrong when I noticed the irregular openings and closings. I hope whoever buys it can somehow keep it alive and continue the original recipes. I guess the current owners just aren't cut out for it.

One night in Calgary - where should we go?

I agree with John, you should hit up Alloy! That place is packed most of the time and even when you look up Alloy on OpenTable, you'll notice that most of their reservations are fully booked in the evening. Wouldn't you think that's a good sign for a restaurant when it's hard to get a reservation? :)

Asafoetida/Hing in YYC?

Ok, I admit I don't know what Hing is, but! There is a new Middle Eastern/East Indian market that opened up where Office Depot used to be on Barlow that is south of 32nd Avenue. It's around the Sunridge area where you'll see the new Four Points Sheraton hotel and it's north of 16 Avenue but south of 32nd Avenue right off Barlow Trail, if you're coming off 16th Avenue and heading north towards 32nd Avenue it would be on the right hand side where you will see a Tim Hortons and McDonalds side by side (it's located right behind them in the same block).

Sorry! I don't know what it's called, I only passed by it once and thought it was interesting but I didn't have time to go in.

Good luck in your search!

xo sauce calgary?

I honestly can't think of any other place but T&T to have XO Sauce. You may want to try Lamba Supermarket beside Sun Chu Kee on Centre Street or Tops Supermarket on 16th Avenue. But I haven't tried the stuff myself, though I did buy some Nissin XO Sauce flavored cup noodles to see how it tasted (haven't opened it yet, but when I'll do I'll let you know). But I know if you can find it at T&T Supermarket in the sauce aisle under the Lee Kum Kee and Amoy brands.

YYC: New Years Eve Tasting Menus

Alright so ... New Years is coming close and i was wondering if there's any restaurants that are doing tasting menus in the city that would seem interesting. I know Chef's Table in Kensington Riverside Inn is doing a 5 course tasting menu for $95 (5 pm - 8 pm) and then another 7 course tasting menu for $135 (I'm assuming 8 pm until midnight) with foie gras, truffles and lobster..... yum huh? It sounds pretty good but I would like to know where my options are and see if any of you guys saw or heard anything that would be tasty too!

Calgary court restaurant

HAHAHA, I just went there tonight had both their pork chop with tomato sauce baked rice and Ja Leung! My husband and I were so full, actually had to take left overs home because it was so much food. But my bill came out to exactly $21.00 including two Chinese soups on the side. Also, I'm pretty sure they have Portguese Baked Chicken on Rice. Sun Chui Kee and Calgary Court are from the same owners so I'm sure they have it. I know Pebble Street is also from the same owner and they have the same pork chop with tomato sauce baked rice dish there too!

The one dish that has me hooked like crack is their Fried Pork Chop with Tomato Sauce Baked Rice. Honestly, every time I go there that dish crosses my mind. I don't know why but it's just that good. I mean the deep fried pork chop covered with tomato sauce and melted cheese over a bed of fried rice and then baked in the oven. Sooo goood. I also always ask for their Chinese Soup (Zhong Tong) and it's the type of soup your Chinese grandmother would have boiling on the kitchen stove for hours where all the flavors of the ingredients come out- and it's only $2.00 a bowl!!! They don't have it advertised on their menu, but it's usually the soup that they would include if you get a set meal.

Chocolate Shooter Cups-YYC

Hey Guys,

I went to Montreal on business trip and I just discovered the great pairing of chocolate and Port. I had Port served to me in a chocolate shooter cups that of course I can eat after I drank the Port. But do anyone know where I can buy chocolate shooter cups in Calgary?

Thanks everyone!
