Recent cooking fails?

I know the feeling. It's not only about the money though, it's that "omigosh I am such a a moron" moment.

Care to share your coleslaw recipe? I promise I'll buy the right ingredients!

Ideas for dip/salad using almond butter?

Exactly. Maybe one one day I'll buy one, but I really don't cook that much on pesach (yet) so I'm just not running to invest.
I did get a new blender, so I'm going to use that for pesach.

Definitely a bummer.
We used to spend Sundays in Red Hook, always ending at fairway. Haven't been in months...

Not sure exactly when the Brooklyn store reopened after Sandy. I remember going for the first time after the re opening and being shocked at the high produce prices. (And a really rude bakery employee)

A food processor is a pricey investment.

I do the bulk of my grocery shopping at shoprite.

They recently changed the dairy layout of the store near me and it bugs me to no end

When was the IPO?
I noticed it going downhill before the summer.
They drastically reduced their kosher offerings. No separate kosher fish counter, kosher meat was all prepacked stuff. Kosher groceries were reduced to one little section of matzah meal & gefilte fish.
The bakery also was always out of fresh breads. I noticed the baguette recipe changed, and it no longer has a crisp crust. They used to have a fantastic fresh garlic bread...not anymore.
I also noticed much higher prices on dairy. Yogurt, cream cheese, cottage cheese...all went up.
Freezer section has more premade meals and a smaller selection of vegetables.

But what really grossed me out and turned me off:
My husband bought a coffeemate- type refrigerated creamer to keep in his office. This was thanksgiving time (I think). He opened it the next day, and it was spoiled. The Sell By date happened to be pretty close. I honestly never buy those things, so I had no idea what the date should be. Happened to be in Shoprite when he called to tell me it was spoiled--- they had the same product with April/May dates!

I once bought celery salt Instead of celery seed. Ugh. A crapload of coleslaw went in the garbage

Fascinating food blog about re-growing romaine lettuce...........

I didn't get a giant head of lettuce, but my daughter was so enthused by it, so we ended up trimming it and eating the leaves every few days.

The one that I planted in soil never grew, so I ended up sticking with the water method

Fairway has definitely slipped. I used to do the majority of my shopping there, but the prices have skyrocketed

Any suggestions for fruit crisp/crumble topping?

I've made a crumbly nut topping for apple crisp.
Can find the recipe if you want...

Passover granola

I don't know if it does or doesn't, but I bought it in a kosher supermarket and it's most definitely KFP. But thanks for the info.

My husband loves these. Perfect to bring to work. He spills out all the liquid and eats only the fruit

How much should an "all you can eat" buffet cost?

I think that's fair. I remember Shang chai in Brooklyn had a buffet that was about $20/person. If you walked in, you had to pay.

I bought a very large bottle of light olive oil. Was planning to use that.

Baked Goods as Gifts For Teachers, Etc.

I gave my daughter's teachers a card from me and a card from her.

One parent sent an email asking for $5 for each teacher. (There are two teachers.)

One tip about serendipity - try to go when it's not insanely busy. The wait time can be hours. The frozen hot chocolate is really good! (Just don't google the calorie count beforehand)

What to serve for Pre-Passover meal

That's what it's like in my house.
My husband works till an hour or two before the chag, so he brings lunch to work.
I boil eggs and potatoes and bake a batch of (frozen) blintzes to have in the fridge, so my daughter and I will just pick on that.

Your favorite dish for pesach (new or old)

I'm sick of eating asparagus!

No Passover food processor, so I'll just use a sharp knife to cut the zucchini.

Also planning on making beets with parsley, scallions and apple cider vinegar. It's one of my favorites
