Dining On Maui [Very Long]

Maui: Lahina & Kapalua; where to eat?

thanks mnadel. i made reservations at kimo's, but never made it. my bad.

forgot to mention:
luau - feast at lele (in terms of food), make reservations and ask for private front row seating (free)
if you take the drive on hwy 30 - stop by julia's banana bread.

Maui: Lahina & Kapalua; where to eat?

just came back from there and i would personally recommend:

fine dining - merriman's kapalua (reservations definitely needed)
cheap eats - poke from foodland or times supermarket
somewhere in the middle - da kitchen in lahaina or aloha mixed plate (strongly suggested by the "locals" in the area)
breakfast - the plantation house (we didn't need reservations)

other recommendations that we didn't get to try out: mama's ribs for bbq, cool cat cafe for some burgers and onions rings.

outside of lahaina: if you find yourself in the small town haiku by haleakala, you have to try lynn's cafe. $5 steak and eggs, a great loco moco, and tasty shoyu chicken.

I heard Santa Barbara has the best SEA URCHIN (UNI) - true?

i know it has been mentioned in another thread, but i'd like to throw out the vendor selling live sea urchins in little italy mercato farmers' market (thanks for the rec cgfan).

recently bought some this past weekend right off the boat. i have to say, the vendor was more than willing to show us how to prepare it and very informative in explaining why san diego has the best sea urchin in the world.

A Dream Realized - The Juicy, Smoky, Delectable Grilled Chicken Skewers of Yakitori Yakyudori (San Diego) [Review] w/ Pics!

thanks exilekiss. we had several favorites for several reasons, but i'd have to say our top three:

1) rolled pork with shiso - so juicy and satisfying
2) chicken wing - nice balance of everything
3) marinated quail eggs w/ horseradish - great in-between snack

that's not to say we didn't love the heart, ptoro, and tongue as well, its hard to pick faves. i have to say, i personally enjoyed the smelt and okra very much. all the side-dishes we had were just as interesting and satisfying as the yakitori itself. there is nothing we wouldn't order again.

The Saltwater Eel Master (or, The Easygoing Anti-Sushi Nazi of Kaito Sushi) (San Diego) [Review] w/ Pics!

just to add another instance for the sake of reference: my wife and i went this past weekend along with my bro-in-law and had omakase. we received roughly ~10 different items.

in most cases me and my wife got one piece each and my bro-in-law received two pieces for himself, except for the two sashimi courses (excuse me if i'm not using proper sushi terminology) in which we only had one to share. in some courses (eg. anago tempura, anago nigiri, and maguro slightly marinated in soy sauce) we each received our own plate: 3 servings of the anago tempura and 6 pieces of nigiri. on top of that, we bought six pours of the cold dry sake (excuse my laziness but someone had mentioned the name of it earlier in this thread) @ $10 a pour, including one for kaz and tipped more than fairly.

this all resulted in a total of $250 or $83/person, keeping in mind we eat and drink (unlike enorah) alot! that said, to us, it was more than worth the price for the food, service and attention we received. we all are anxiously planning and strategizing our next visit as we come from chula vista!

see pics from that meal here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/renandrob/3829050746/in/set-72157621638820214/
the pictures before this one are from our first visit.

additional notes: we were there on a saturday @ 4pm, right at opening.

Succulent Roasted Lamb In All Its Glory - The Wonderful Barbacoa at Aqui Es Texcoco (San Diego) [Review] w/ Pics!

you probably know more than i do about sd eats! anything i would suggest would probably disappoint you.

i would recommend, if you haven't tried already, carne asada fries. it's nowhere near authentic mexican, it's no culinary innovation, but it's exactly what it sounds like - carne asada and fries, and it's a guilty pleasure!

the best are found in sd. just go to any (insert any name here)berto's shop.

Succulent Roasted Lamb In All Its Glory - The Wonderful Barbacoa at Aqui Es Texcoco (San Diego) [Review] w/ Pics!

definitely the head with pancita coming in 2nd. going back to get some lamb head to-go next time. this past sunday, we waited about an hour for a table. it was worth it though.

you have much better pictures than i do, but feel free to check ours out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/renandrob/sets/72157621994770486/

looking forward to your future reviews. are you from out-of-town hitting up sd spots?
