Tabetai yo's Profile
"Patricia Unterman, Examiner Food Critic, Dismissed"
Well, the good thing is that I no longer need to look at the Examiner, since she is not in it. Patty has fantastic taste, a great eye for the undiscovered, and is a talented writer. She really brings the food to life. She is not reviewing restaurants in the sense that "this one is better than that one"; rather, she treats each place on its own merits and what's good/not good about it uniquely. You learn a lot about food and different flavors when you read her. Patty KNOWS FOOD. That is really different from simply being a "reviewer". On to better things, and I'll look forward to that!
Champagne Seafood Restaurant Dim Sum - San Mateo
Agree.Needs work. Maybe it will improve but for now there are far better places to go. Darn, this was so convenient.
Anchor & Hope
I like the rest of the food overall at A &H better than Woodhouse. The clams at Woodhouse were less greasy than those at A&H, which also weren't the crispiest.
Chowdown Report: Little Sichuan
and may I chime in as well...lamb, lamb, lamb. Really crazy tastes all dancing on the tongue. Killer hot...but not. Tingly. Fabulous. I second the pickles soup rec and the jellyfish. Also I loved the fish fragrant pork and since I was the lucky one to take it home, superlative when reheated.
this place is just down the hill from us and so glad to have made its acquaintance. Order right and you won't be disappointed.
Anchor & Hope
Anchor & hope, two words: clam bellies.
Oh wait, 3 words: fried clam bellies.
Omurice?? Chika is now closed...
On the Bridge in the city has it too. Or you can buy "Let's Cook Japanese Food!" written by me, shameless plug, and cook it yourself. It is really easy.
Ippudo review
I agree, Menchanko-Tei's hiyashi chuka was pretty darned awful. So disappointing. It's not that hard to make.
Changes in downtown San Mateo (Chinese, Japanese)
I'll see if I can find out & bring the info tomorrow.
Changes in downtown San Mateo (Chinese, Japanese)
Chika moved to Cupertino. A loss to the neighborhood for sure.
Egg on top - new trend?
have you been to Dojima An on O Farrell? They have a tasty katsu don. I'm cooking oyako don for a demo in the midwest next weekend and I am going to have to explain to those people that rock hard is not the desired effect.
Egg on top - new trend?
agree--for example, kare raisu with an egg on top! or oyako don, katsudon with barely cooked egg. or japanese style spaghetti with egg on top.
Looking for Italian sub in SF, specific requirements
That sounds great, I miss those NJ subs. Shredded lettuce?
There's a little deli in MIllbrae, the name is escaping me, on Broadway directly across the street from Starbucks. It feels like an East Cost place and they have the right taste.
Dan Dan Mian: Little Sichuan Express vs. Classic Sichuan
Had dinner @ Classic Sichuan last night & we'd go back--maybe next time a little preprandial pepcid ac though.
Had the chicken soup with is indeed fantastically good. Should have had 2. Salted string beans arrived much different than expected and really good--they're chopped up in tiny peices with red (not hot) and green (super hot) peppers with a plasantly salinic taste, not overpoweringly salty. I wanted to have dan dan mein but my husband thought I said ja ja mein so we had those noodles with hot bean paste--good, not terribly hot at all, noodles a bit on the mushy side. I ordered "Wild Organic Fried Beef Strips " and it came....beef tripe! If you're a fan--looked good. If you're not (I'm not) stay away from the "strips". They let us exchange it for another dish so we had the Beef in Chili Oil (or some such title) on the SIchuan menu. It was hot but not killer and the beef (most of it) was of reasonable tenderness and flavor with some chewy bits. They were quite nice and the restaurant was farily well occupied for a Wed. dinnertime. Another table had a hot pot with chicken and chestnuts that looked tasty. Also--loved the daikon pickle served on all of the tables, not so much the wet peanuts.
Need pre-theatre recommendations
It's business so price is not an issue, and environment should be business appropriate. As a reference point I have liked Becco for this type of dinner in the past. Type of cusine is also no particular preference. The key criteria is that it serve very good food and not be a dive or overly casual. A restaurant that you would go to even if it were not pre-theatre. Is that helpful in narrowing it down a bit?
Need pre-theatre recommendations
Party of 6 clients who think they know everything, Hey, maybe they do, who's to say? Would like to choose a terrific place that's consistently delicious and efficient in getting us out & to the show on time. Nothing super touristy unless the food is really justifiably good. Thanks!
Suzuran (中華そば すずらん), Ramen, Shibuya, Tokyo, Yamanote Line
wow, it sounds fantastic. I'm there in a couple of weeks...
Good Japanese Restaurant on the Peninsula?
Kaygetsu is not suitable for children even with sophisticated tastes.
Good Japanese Restaurant on the Peninsula?
Restaurant Mai and Kisaku in San Mateo are good for what you ate in Japan. (not sushi).
Sushi Kei in Millbrae for ippin ryori and good sushi.
Sakae in Burlingame if you have a lot of $$.
Best BBQ in Kansas City
More of the same plus the sliced beef, which was melt-in-your-mouth. Liked the spicy sauce better too.
Tokyo Yoshoku restaurants, a listing
Thanks for this! I love yoshoku and have wanted to eat more of it next visit (a couple of weeks from now). This exhaustive list should keep me going for awhile. Elysee is a personal favorite.
Best BBQ in Kansas City
Ate twice (in an 18 hour period!) at Jack Stack (a very short walk from where we were staying). Had the beef rib, the pork baby back ribs, the beef and the pork burnt ends, the beans, the slaw, and the creamy corn thing. It was all soooo good. We liked the beef rib and the beans the best. Those beans alone--with the meat and meat drippings in there--fantastic. Would have liked it a little bit less sweet.
Thanks again for your rec's and thanks for the nice weather the last 2 days--we didn't expect that!
Remember Toast-R Pizza?
true, yet still I yearn for them...maybe that's why they disappeared, shredded roof-of-mouth lawsuits swamped them?
Kara-age and Chashu Ramen @ Niko Niko Sushi (Katanaya), San Francisco
further to the previous...
there's shio (salt) shoyu (soy sauce) and miso broth to choose from. We like the miso best but we haven't tried the shio yet. Each broth can be ordered as "kotteri", the richer, more fatty flavoured broth, or "asari" a relatively lighter flavor, a salt and possibly seafood stock. We much prefer kotteri. If you don't specify (and you don't look like you can speak Japanese) I don't think they ask you which one and I am not sure which is the default. The place is small but it would be fun to get each of the broths in each of the formulations and do a side by side taste comparison!
Kara-age and Chashu Ramen @ Niko Niko Sushi (Katanaya), San Francisco
The "new" Katana ya on O Farrell is pretty good, we've been a couple of times and it is our ramen of choice in the City. The broth we like is the "extra rich" I forget how you say it in Japanese but it is essentially the fattiest one (not tonkotsu though.) Haven't had anything else there.
While you are in the neighborhood, another good place is Dojima-An--their katsudon is very, very good and I see a lot of men getting the katsu curry. The place is usually packed. Melanie, your rec's have always been spot on and your ramen list looks darned good to me...everybody's got their own tastes, ne? that's what it is all about!
Best BBQ in Kansas City
I love it that you all are so full of recommendations and so willing to help a poor (hungry) out-of- towner. Must be a midwest thing ;-)
I am so fired up for Stacks-- there are so many items that sound good. Definitely, pork ribs, (I don't love lamb or prime rib in general) burnt ends, beans (duh) slaw (for me). I may order for my hapless colleague as well--I want to try brisket too. They'll have to roll me outta there. Thanks a bunch all.
Israeli-Style Falafel
Azuri rocks. Wish we had something like that in San Francisco.
On a slightly related topic, I just had kibbeh yesterday for the first time--the stuffed kind. That was GOOD.
Gold Mountain dim sum :-(
I work nearby so I will see if I can get myself there in the near future. Thanks for the tip, hope springs eternal.
