The 18 months thing is wrong too. I have hens who are 10 years old. They take the winter off for molting and regrowing feathers but otherwise are still stellar layers.

I agree. It's a total bummer. Never open with less selection. They seem to really only be concentrating on the sandwich/lunch crowd.

Tacos de papa in SF?

They are hard to come by in the bay area I think. I ate them a lot when I lived in Southern California. I don't know about San Francisco, but Taco Grill in Fruitvale in Oakland have GREAT papas tacos.

I agree. Every time we go we really enjoy ourselves. It is convivial and fun and the food is always interesting. It's a really nice addition to the Oakland scene.

I went back to try the bar menu Friday night and left happy once again. I had a delicious miso, apple parsnip soup and an amazingly delicious grilled cheese along with the Linden Street dark ale.I also tried the potato chicharones and boy were those tasty. Light and crispy and flavorful.

We arrived at 11:30 PM and were happy to see a few parties enjoying dinner late too. I really want to support any restaurant that will serve until 1 AM, especially one this tasty. I think when the bar is finished in the spring, that will be even better and do a great job of filling the space later at night.

I agree Ruth. This news realllly bums me out. I was hoping that the reason he stepped away from Plum was for a much more exciting reason.

I too was there opening night and I have to say Plum is lovely! I love the black walls, art, and oddly shaped room. My friend and I sat at the bar and watched the 8 person team, including a supervising Daniel Patterson in action. Service was attentive, though there were some longish pauses, but nothing unforgivable on opening night. My three favorite dishes of the night were the cauliflower with dandelion salsa, the vegetables in a vadouvan (sp?) broth and the goat cheese cake with grape sorbet desert. I can't speak to the animal dishes, since I am a vegetarian, but as a vegetarian I left very happy. It is a great addition to Oakland, and BRAVO for staying open until 1 AM!! Very convivial and fun. I can't wait to see how it develops, and think it is off to a great start.

Cocktail in Oakland uptown: a challenge

There are a few excellent options within range. You can go to Flora and sit at the bar for a drink ahead of time. Or go get greyhounds at Cafe van Kleef. Or head down to Radio (a few more blocks down). There are also the bars/lounges at Pican, Ozuma and Mua.

Plum - Coi spinoff in Oakland

Actually the old Louisiana Fried Chicken space is supposed to open in late August. The Franklin Square bar space was going to be worked on later from what I read.

2 Veg Heads Hitting SFO

I can chime in on Coi and Boca Nova. Both are excellent options and have lots of veggie options. One is high-end (Coi) and one is casual. The veg tasting menu I had at Coi is in the top 3 meals of my life. Camino is another great option I forgot to mention as well.

As a bay area vegetarian and a food nut, I concur that the Bay is going through a BIG meat love affair right now. I have been having a much harder time eating out and even some of my old reliable places (like Flora who used to have some amazingly creative veg dishes on the menu) have become far more meat-centric. That said there are still some wonderful places to try. Ubuntu is amazing. We can all agree on that. Encuentro in Oakland's Jack London Square should not be missed. It is a lovely, convivial place with very good all veg food. You should also hit up the pizza places (Pizzaiolo, Boot and Shoe, Delfina, Beretta). They always have tons of veggie options and are cooking seasonally and organically. I truly love Cha-Ya for Japanese. It is wonderful carefully prepared food. And for the mock-meat experience you must go to Golden Lotus above the rest. They are a cut above the rest.

Rave for Taco Grill - E. Oakland

Taco Grill is my new favorite. They have seriously good crispy potato tacos. SERIOUSLY. It is a good thing they are not just down the street, because I am hooked. The taco salad is excellent too and it is so nice to have so many vegetarian options. The salsas are wonderfully fresh and delicious and the fresh-made chips are tasty and crisp. Everything is fresh and hand made and so very reasonably priced. Go Taco Grill!

Kung Pao in the East Bay

I've only had the Kung Pao tofu here (which I love), but Spices 3 in downtown Oakland is the place to go for the super duper chili laden food. My other fave there is explosive tofu. It is so hot it makes me a feel a little light-headed after a few pieces.
