4 days, 3 nights in Boston
For a French Bistro-esque spot, I would also check out Sel De La Terre on Boylston (pretty much IN Copley Sq). I frequently eat solo at the downstairs bar. The bartenders are nice, the food is great. If you go on a Monday night, they have $1 oysters.
For good sandwiches you can check out Parish Cafe on the corner of Arlington and Boylston.
Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe on Columbus is a classic diner and great for breakfast. Good pancakes, huge omelets.
Boston on the cheap...
It's not a $7 hot dog, it's a $7 meal. A unique and delicious meal to boot.
"Halal Indian"
Just finished up my lunch from Halal today, and unfortunately it's not very good. This is a shame, because there should be a good indian place in Brigham Circle, but alas there isn't.
I had a combo plate which included Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Vindaloo, A black lentil dish, and vegetable curry. It also came with basmati rice, a vegetable/chick pea fritter and a few breaded and fried string beans. After tax the price was $8.35.
Both chicken dishes were under-seasoned and just tasted flat. The chicken pieces were dry and the sauces seemed to have no depth. The predominant flavor in the vindaloo was chicken stock and the consistency seemed very "corn starch thickened." Not that corn starch is always bad, it's just that I've never really noticed this from other indian restaurants. Despite this, the vindaloo was still a little thin.
The fried string beans were soggy, the vegetable fritter was a little underdone on the inside. The black lentils were okay, but tasted more like cuban-style black beans than indian black lentils.
Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be going back.
best omelettes in boston?
They're not traditional omelets, but my vote is for Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe. Gigantic and delicious. Especially the spinach and feta or hot sausage, pepper and onion.... damn.
Good Eats Near the Park Plaza Hotel?
You're a short walk to Chinatown where you can find some very good, very cheap food. A board search will turn up a lot of options. Some of my favorites are Taiwan Cafe, King Fung (call ahead for the duck), the banh mi at Mei Sum, and Xinh Xinh.
For lunch, you're a quick walk from Parrish Cafe on Boylston and Arlington. Good sandwiches, good prices.
McCormick and Shmick's has a pretty cheap happy hour menu during the week, something along the lines of $3 burgers.
Flash's is a good place to grab a drink.
weekend breakfast
Yeah, I'm almost positive, they cook with clarified butter, not oil.
Breakfast Near Back Bay Station
I have to agree. While my brunch there wasn't the worst I've ever had, I certainly won't be going back. I just remember going in with low/no expectations and still being underwhelmed.

Dinner for 5 near Hynes Conv Center
Casa Romero is very close to Hynes. They accept reservations, and I really enjoyed a meal I had there.
Any good ideas for taking my girlfriend on a romantic dinner for her birthday?
welcome to the board, to get a good rec, you're going to have to give some more info. for starters:
neighborhoods
cuisines
price
Alternatively you could try searching this board for words like "romantic" or "birthday"
Dinner for 6 recs
There's about 6-8 of us that get together once or twice a month for dinner. A few previous spots have been East Coast Grill, Vinnys at Night, Redbones, and Santarpios.
The criteria are:
$15-20 entrees max
A liquor license, or at least the ability to serve beer
Casual atmosphere
Nothing too fancy
Reservations are a plus, but not necessary
I'm thinking about Mexican or Chinese for the next dinner, but am open to other suggestions. The South End is home base, but from the previous restaurants, we are willing to drive. We'll be going on a Wednesday night, if that matters.
Thanks for any help!
Greatest meals
My first thought was the Roast Chicken at Hammersley's. After all of the hype, everyone recommending it, the chicken was still better than I was expecting.
I would say the same about the Cubano at Chez Henri. It also exceeded the deafening hype.
Giacomo's?
I've only been to the South End location, but I've been many, many times. Probably my favorite reasonably priced italian restaurant in boston. From what I hear, the main difference between the South End and North End locations is that the SE location offers dessert.
The atmosphere is bustling, but not loud. The SE location also accepts reservations. You will not be disappointed.
Tonight's Chocolate Madness at the Cyclorama
I've been twice and really enjoyed it. There are a lot of people, but not too many. You will get a chance to eat everything you want, at least once. Your chocolate craving will be sated.
If Christina's is there again, I would make sure to go there and see if they offer the Lavender White Chocolate ice cream again. Really quite spectacular.
Boston Hound coming to Chicago for a weekend
Wow, thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'll be in town the first weekend in May and will be sure to report back!
What's your favorite neighborhood spot?
Coda is my go-to neighborhood spot. Great food, great drinks, nice people.
And on a cold rainy/snowy day, its hard to beat Anchovies.
Boston Hound coming to Chicago for a weekend
Frontrera offering Saturday brunch just made me very happy. Very, very happy.
Hawaiian restaraunt?
Well, I don't know any hawaiian restaurants, BUT...
Last time I was at Mei Sum Bakery in Chinatown there was a guy in there ordering up their steamed pork buns. He mentioned that he used to eat something very similar when he lived in Hawaii and these were the closest he has found.
I don't know, maybe that will help.
Boston Hound coming to Chicago for a weekend
This trip can't arrive soon enough, I'm too excited for the (too few) meals I will be having.
I'll be in town for just a weekend 2 Breakfasts, 2 Lunches, 2 Dinners. But, I'm going to try to squeeze in as many snacks and in-between-meal meals as possible. One dinner is already spoken for ( we're very excited to be going to Alinea). Because of that one dinner, the rest of the trip will be on a tighter budget. We'll be staying at the Marriott downtown on the magnificent mile.
Since this will be my first 'real' trip to the windy city, I really need to get some Chicago style pizza and a hot dog. I've been doing some research on this board and have a few ideas so far:
Pizza (dinner or lunch )- Gullivers, Gino's East, Bacino.
Hot Dogs ( a lunch) - Gene & Jude's, Portillos
As for the breakfasts and other lunch dinner, we are very adventurous eaters, love the hole in the wall shacks, but also enjoy nice establishments. Here's some more info/question:
-We both really like Mexican food, and I am wondering if there are any great Mexican breakfast places (Huevos Rancheros?)
-Is Frontrera Grill worth a lunch stop?
-Any spots for late-night eats near the hotel?
-Any good happy hour places with decent apps and interesting cocktails for drinks before dinner?
What am I missing? Where should we go for breakfast?
Any help will be much appreciated!!
Copley area with 18 year old
More Upscale:
Mistral - French
Casa Romero - upscale mexican
More Casual:
Giacomo's - Excellent red sauce Italian restaurant. I've never had a bad meal here.
Addis Red Sea - Ethiopian (a bit of a walk from copley)
First Banh Mi Sandwich
To answer your question... I don't know.
But, you should consider just running to one or two other places (in addition to Mei Sum) while you're there. Just grab one from each. That's what I did for my first banh mi experience. You can see Lu's from Mei Sum, and just around the corner from Lu's is Saigon Sandwich.
Mother's Day Brunch suggestions?
Depending on your appetite, you might want to check out Henrietta's Table in the Charles Hotel. You would definitely need a reservation, though.

Birthday drinks - ideas please
CODA, definitely. It's on the corner of Columbus and Dartmouth, so right next to Back Bay station. It has great drinks and I really enjoy the food. Laid back atmosphere, excellent bartenders.
Try the basil gimlet or the old fashioned.
Birthday Dinner for 8?
Eastern Standard would be great, I think that they could easily accommodate 8 people. If you like ECG why not give that a shot, I've eaten there with parties of 8.
Tremont 647?
Aquitaine?
scones, where do you buy the most delicious ones?
I've really enjoyed the butterscotch scones from the South End Buttery.
Help! -- I need a liquor store!
If you're not a big whiskey drinker, I'd get a nice bottle of bourbon. Cheaper than a nice bottle of scotch and easier to drink. Try Woodford Reserve or Buffalo Trace.
