Saturday Brunch

Olivia does brunch on Saturday 10-2:30. It's not a buffet and it's sort of expensive, but it's delicious. Menu is here: http://olivia-austin.com/brunch/

Early Bird Specials

The Carillon usually has one of these going: http://www.thecarillonrestaurant.com (link goes to their homepage as they don't seem to have a separate link: $29 three-course dinner between 5:30 and 6:30, Tuesday through Saturday.)

Jewish or Scandinavian style pickled/smoked fish anywhere?

Check out Sasha's Russian market. The selection varies, but they've always had a variety of fish when I've been in there.

The Noble Pig

The Noble Pig and the tongue sandwich are both excellent, and the duck pastrami is good, too. I'm a fan of their pickles as well. I expect the other sandwiches are also good, but I keep coming back to those three! It's in kind of a crummy-looking strip mall; inside, the atmosphere is "lunch counter". Pleasant enough. It's a little pricier than your average sandwich place, but not overpriced for the quality. I'd recommend it without any caveats.

Mangia Pizza has a surprisingly good gooey brownie with ice cream.

Satisfying 15 for dinner on Friday with a budget

Hmm, North by Northwest? They don't ordinarily take reservations (and I'd imagine they'd be busy at 6:30 on a Friday night) but they might be willing to do something for that big a party. Lots of entrees around $10 or $15.

Where to dine on thanksgiving??

It's not particularly southern, but I've had a great Thanksgiving meal at Hudson's on the Bend. It was years ago, though; no idea if they still do it.

Best loaf of rye bread?

Who bakes the best rye loaf in town? Besides tasty bread (and caraway seeds), I'd like a really good, crisp crust.

Asia Cafe Menu Item Comparison

I tried the Winter Melon with Dry Shrimp: chunks of winter melon and a scattering of small dried shrimp in a thin, savory white sauce. It was pleasant enough but rather bland--I think more shrimp would have helped--and not a big favorite at the table. It was interesting to try but I don't think I'd get it again when there are so many winners on the menu.

help me find shrimp and grits

I am far from a shrimp-and-grits connoisseur, but I've had them at both Simplicity wine bar (small appetizer portion) and at brunch at Frank.

gypsy picnic: trailer food festival on 11/06

During the week ZubikHouse lives at 2222 & Parkcrest, in the parking lot of the Clark gas station. Haven't tried them, though. I think they're closed on Mondays.

Ambience / Feel @ Perlas...

Perla's is more open & airy than Foreign & Domestic and more preppy than hipsterish; last time I was there, a couple weeks ago, I thought most of the clientele wouldn't have looked out of place in a late 80s J. Crew catalog. I think a sport jacket would be fine but a suit would feel like overkill.

Eats in the Hill Country Galleria?

There's nothing on yelp about them being closed. They answer their phone and say they are open for business.

Also tried those two, and agree. They start serving lunch at 10:30 and stop serving breakfast at noon.

Alamo Drafthouse

They've got it at the Village location as well, and I agree that it's awesome. I emailed them to suggest they add it to the regular menu. Y'all should, too--we can make this happen!

A Salad

Mirabelle on Mesa just north of Spicewood has several delicious entree salads, including a New Mexican salad with chicken which is similar to the Corazon salad mentioned by MattC02 (the two restaurants share ancestry).

Foreign & Domestic on North Loop

Was here last night for dinner. They've got a sign posted on the door that they'll be closed tonight for installation of a second A/C unit. We were quite comfortable sitting against the wall opposite the kitchen, but the waitstaff looked warm!

We tried the bone marrow croquettes, popovers, artichoke/grilled peach salad, corn ravioli, and "The Ripper"; all were tasty and as-described by previous posters. For dessert we split the peach tarte tatin which was delicious and came with a small cup of basil "snowcone," which was so fresh and yummy we think it should be a standard snowcone flavor. We will definitely be back.

Organic restaurants in Austin, TX

I've enjoyed the avocado and veggie "chorizo" tacos, among other dishes, at the Daily Juice Cafe, which is organic, raw, vegan, and gluten-free. Their desserts are also surprisingly yummy.

We've also got Borboleta (organic, vegan, gluten-free, not raw) and Beets (uses organic & local ingredients where possible), which I haven't tried.

TerraBurger is a local burger place that uses organic "core ingredients".

Fuego's - Albondigas Soup

Albondigas is what my parents always ordered for me when I was a little kid in Tucson--it now qualifies as comfort food. One more reason to get around to giving Fuego's a try!

Azul Tequila also serves a tasty version.

Where to get a steak sandwich in Austin?

It's strips of steak, not a whole steak, but it's definitely not hamburger. It used to be the Friday lunch special but they now serve it at lunch every day.
