Italian in KC

Italian is my favorite but in KC is a tough one. Lydia's (which you've already done) and Il Truilo (already mentioned) are the best -- if you're looking for Italian that's like food people eat in Italy. For the american-italian variety Cascone's is probably best. And Garrozzo's is very popular. Il Centro isn't really Italian -- though they have pizza and some dishes made with pasta. It's really just a place that's conveniently located and serves basic food. I've never been to Carmen's, can't get anyone to go (supposedly overwhelming portions type of place?) I almost never recommend non-local chains, but given the absence of options in this category, Brio on the Plaza is actually pretty good.

I agree it sounds most like the Frog. Here's another slight possibility...could it have been Joe D's in Brookside? It's on a corner, bar on right and at that time the chef was probably French. Don't know about the shutters, but inside art is French posters, like Willi's Wine Bar.

Suggestions in Kansas City, near the Plaza?

I second JJs. It's pretty traditional stuff, not cutting edge but a good local spot for lunch or dinner and their steaks can rival Plaza III if you're into that. The Paco Shrimp appetizer is their specialty (bacon wrapped yum). ReVerse is another local place on the Plaza and Grand Street mentioned before -- both have outdoor seating which is nice right now. If you want a meal with all the latest greatest hip stuff BlueStem is it.

To the original question on smoking, all the places you mention are in KCMO and are now non smoking. However Re Verse has outdoor seating and allows smoking there. I really like the place. Later in the evening it becomes more a club atmosphere than a restaurant. Like many places on the Plaza they have great happy hour specials. And theirs lasts until 7pm! (may not apply on Fri/Sat) but most small plates are half price and you even a deal on wine. Plus it's a locally owned place, not a chain which is where I try to spend most of my dining dollars! All the same applies to the Frog (except it doesn't become a club, remains a restaurant!). Plaza III is where I'd take people for a KC steak, has a great clubby bar. Another place I like to send out of towners looking for a classic KC experience is the Savoy Grill downtown. Ok, not a foodie's hot spot, and the food results can be mixed, but it's a great place that should at least be visited once. Been there since 1903, tons of history. An alternative to doing a full meal is going for a drink and snack at the bar -- you still get the atmosphere experience without the commitment of a meal. Enjoy.

I used to travel to SF a lot and one time (5 years ago?) I had dinner at a restaurant that was located on the first floor of an older apartment building (or condo). It was small and pretty fancy. At the time the chef had been an Iron Chef. I cannot remember the name of the place or exactly where it was. And I'm wondering if it's still there and still fantastic. Anyone know what I'm talking about???

Films that make you want to eat!

I agree with Babette's Feast, but another I haven't seen mentioned is Age of Innocence the food was gorgeous. This and other period pieces that show the kooky extravagance of meals and their presentation in times gone by are pretty interesting.

Notable names in cooking show history?

Another vote for Jeff Smith, Frugal Gourmet! I knew absolutely nothing and learned so much from him. I think he made it all easier to understand for me because he connected things to their culture and gave reasons why things are done a certain way. It was an approach that made things memorable. Plus his show was real, not slick and overly produced. That made cooking feel accessible. I still think of him often when I'm cooking.

Lost my inspiration - need an elegant but simple stand-up appetizer

steam some asparagus and wrap thinly sliced prosciutto around the stems. Takes no time to prepare, can be done ahead, looks pretty on a platter, and is really easy for folks to grab and eat. When ever I do this every last one is eaten. just be sure not to let the asparagus get too limp by over steaming -- rinse in cold water to stop the cooking!

cake/pastry advice please!

Not a new or trendy place, it's been there 100 years but I love Veniero's 342 East 11th St EV. Classic Italian Pastries and Cakes. You can get cake by the slice, bet many of the varieties would hold up. Oldies can be goodies!
