East Africa Ethiopian Restaurant (NDG)
To jump onto Waziboy's question, what are the specialties there, what did you order that brought you back 4x?!?
Affordable downtown Italian (or not)
Happy Holidays to All!
My friend and I will be doing some Holiday trekking around town this Saturday. He would like to wrap up the eve at Stogies Cigar Lounge which is at 2015 Crescent. I will not eat on Crescent. Period. So I'm looking for something within walking distance.
I made a reservation at Da Vinci, but we both have kids with xmas lists that read like novels and we'll be cabbing it to & fro Mtl-West, sooooo I'm hoping to find something less spendy. Does anybody have input on the following or input on any other resto in that area, as we're both flexible on cuisine. Under $30 mains would be great.
Bistro La Marinara
Cibo & Vino
La Medusa
Hostaria Romana
Mani's (sounds weird....but who knows)
Thanks for any input.

fish & chips?
Was Mommy's in Lachine a fish & chips place? Was it any good? Prob not if it's defunct! Please, please, please be something good.....please. Join my chant!
fish & chips?
I was tooling down Monkland in this crazy rain, just noticed a sign in the window of the now closed grillade place, Massis. They apparently closed and the sign said "Poisson & Frites" "Mommy" (? again it was pouring and I was scooting along), "opening soon". This place is above/below/beside/near the Mexican resto, Amaranto on Monkland Ave. I'll post more when there's more to post.
has anyone tried the tasting menu at the kitchen table at DNA?
Was the lima-type bean in the foie gras and duck egg ravioli dish???? If so, that wasn't a lima bean, it was a testicle. Just sayin'
Recs for restaurant gift card: Montréal-Ouest ?
There's not too much in MoWest, but Burger de Ville on Westminster Ave may have gift cards. Maybe try St, Viateur Bagel or The Olde Orchard up on Monkland Ave in NDG. Casual places. Mikado on Monkland is also good, sushi. Down a bit on Sherbrooke is a relatively new sushi place called 5 Saisons Sushi. I was surprised that it was so good, they also had a brisk takeout and delivery business.
Dinner in le Plateau
Can anyone comment on which, Cocagne or Les 3 Petits Bouchons, is preferred?? I have a res at both for tomorrow. Hopping around town tomorrow, not looking for the wine experience, just a nice, somewhat casual dinner...with a cutie! Thank you.
Old Port w/ a couple of twists
Thanks, never been to Titanic....never even heard of it. So cross that off. I inquired about the time of year, because isn't Jardin Nelson closed now? So, I'll keep both Jardon and Le Bourlingeur on the list if this trip is into warner temps.
Maybe Titanic could cater to the hotel...if they go back to regroup, check email, update Facebook.....! But, yeah, catering is always a Plan B.
Old Port w/ a couple of twists
My sis-in-law is a program coordinator for an elder hostel which promotes visits to Old Montreal. The group always has dinner at Le Restaurant le Vieux Port or Galianos. The problem they have is with lunch. They've been to Fourquet Fouchette whick works and L'Arrivage which doesn't work when they have large groups.
Soooo, here we go. Somewhere between min 25 to very, very max 40 people, so let's just say 30ish. Aged 60-85.........walking mostly........staying at The Marriott Springhill Suites, $20-25 for lunch.
Any thoughts on:
Titanic
Rest Vallier
Cluny
Le Cartet
....anything else...
I'll assume they would need to put down some type of deposit (don't know why....just saying).
I feel like just making them lunch here!!!
PS~I guess they've tried Brisket Montreal(?) to unfavorable reviews.
I'm going on a date...pls help.
Thank you for getting back to me. As it turned out, it was a blind date and I got stood up. It's ok, I'm big & strong (actually not big, just strong). Maybe I turned him off when I told him about the duck testicles I ate in the ravioli dish at DNA. Do ya think?
Yes, Bu will be on my list for the next "almost date" , thank you again.
I'm going on a date...pls help.
My 1st date since separating and I'm shit**ing 2 bricks. He's in Vaudreuil, me in MoWest. We're going to meet for a drink and a bite....like a nibble at the bar, and he will come into to town to meet me. I know I should search the board, but any quick ideas. Nice atmosphere, great place to talk, not too many booby women!! View (optional), price no prob. Nervous.
Wish me luck.
QING HUA DUMPLING
Wow, we could only taste coriander and I like it, but found it too much. Different tastes!
Maybe kinky if I wasn't calling him a ding-dong and hiding behind my napkin!
QING HUA DUMPLING
I was there yesterday too! Kicked myself repeatedly when I read the little menu card on the way home and saw the marinated duck wings. CRAP, I missed them! Next time. Q: are all the dumplings with coriander so strongly flavored of it? We ordered lamb/coriander and the lamb was totally lost. Not just a bit lost..... totally. The fried pork cabbage were great! Almost got hit 3x in a row by my husbands dumpling juice.
What are you making right now?
Thanks to your sandwich post on MTL, I just ran out to Maitre Boucher and making a bacon/fig jam/gruyere/dubliner cheddar grilled cheese on caramelized onion kaiser.
Who makes the best sandwiches in town?
Momesso on Upper Lachine makes very good sandwiches (subs). Good fries too. I like the sausage loaded and the spencer cheese steak. Hubby likes the chicken. Crowded at lunch and cash only. Good stuff!
Where's the best burger in Montreal
I can't say "the best" because I haven't eaten my way around town like some other CHders on this thread........I won't name names!!!! There is a new little burger joint called Burger de Ville that took over The Chien Chaud in MoWest on Westminster. Father & Son team, very nice folks! I had the black & blue burger which came with caramelized onions, black pepper mayo and I also added sauteed mushrooms. It was like a burger au poivre with a hunk of blue cheese. Hubby had bacon cheese burger. We split a big bowl of fries, 3 sodas. Came to $19.00. Mine was *really* tasty.....he didn't share, but it was gone in short order. They also have some steaks, salads, soups. Very simple and focused menu. Oh yes, they have like 18 items (like the sauteed mushrooms) to add for free!
Pokemon cake
PartyWorld in Lachine on St Jacques has a woman who makes cakes for their parties. Same thing, she takes photos and screens it on the cake. I don't eat cake, but I was told it was very good (from both parents and kids). Have ordered from them 2x. 514-363-9111. Good luck, hope everything works out for you.
Exploring QC cheeses - looking for recos
A really great find is the 1608 from Charlevoix. It was made to celebrate QC 400th, It's a raw cow milk, firm cheese and very tasty. Also love, Ciel de Charlevoix is a lightly vein blue, excellent. And I also like Alfred Le Fermier, washed rind farmer type cheese, Grey Owl ash rind goat milk. Love cheese.

Fresh Fish in Montreal
I agree with kpzoo, The Poissonnerie in Westmount has a very nice fish selection. They recently started selling Alaskan Black Cod, which was really nice! Did the whole miso glazed thing.....slurp, slurp. I also get lobsters from them (for lobster wonton tacos...burp, burp!). Someone on the ch board was looking for xl-shrimp. They have them....bleepity-bleeping-huge. They have Boss Brand jumbo lump crab, which is my fav, as well as Big Fellows fav, Phillips.
I also like Maitre Boucher for shrimp, scallops, salmon. Occasionally sea bass.
I don't get over to New Victoria much anymore, but they're great too. If you don't mind the cash only policy and the man wielding the salmon tipped machete. I like that kind of adventure when I shop!
Agreed, the place on Monkland is bad.
ISO of the best crab cake in Montreal
Right, I asked the man there about Phillip's and he said that they carry it sometime, but said that "this is better, larger lump crab". Now, if I can remember the name.......duh......nope. Anyway, it was very good, big lump crab. I made a shrimp and crab cocktail, nothing fried, and it was excellent. Where do you source Phillip's brand?
ISO of the best crab cake in Montreal
It was the one in Westmount. I forget the brand of crab, but it was from Maryland and not cheap, $36 a can. When I went back last week, the canned crab was a different brand and it was from Thailand I think. Didn't buy it. But the fish looks really good there, fresh, unlike the crappy place on Monkland...horrible. I also buy fish, scallops at Maitre Boucher of all places. They have nice cod.
ISO of the best crab cake in Montreal
Grew up in Boston, corporate office was in Baltimore and I've been on the hunt for good crab and crabcakes since we moved to MTL 2 years ago. Not much to report, so with that said, my vote is for NDG, but will travel for good cakes!! Also, thanks for your tip on the canned crab (Chow Home Cooking Board), I bought some from the fish place on Sherbrooke, blue crab and it was very tasty.
Hano Bak Cavendish/Sherbrooke
What's the draw there? Looked like just a Veg/Fruit place......as I'm careening down Sherbrooke. Parking...lack of...has kept me from a true effort. Slacker-me.
Le Paris
Apparently the chef or owner (may be the same) of Le Caveau will be opening Le Paris soon. Some changes to the menu as well as an update of the decor.
Hysteria over Listeria?
As of Thurs 18th, both Fromagerie Atwater & Hamel Atwater had their big cases totally empty. The big cases being where the cut cheeses used to live. With the notification that insurance won't cover the losses incurred and the possibility that the inspectors might make another pass, I wouldn't expect these guys to be back in great form for some time. Lets try to do we we can to help them out. For instance, I have a *lovely* Le Secret de Maurice goat cheese nicely hidden in the back of the fridge........ :-) that I picked up at Fromage Atw.
Horseradish Crusted Salmon Recipe
*I posted this recipe for another dinner request awhile back. It's really very good. A bit of chopping/prep, but worth all of it. Again, I usually make a crab/butter/cream sauce to spoon under or around the plate and....WOW!*
This is a GREAT dish I ripped from Hamersley's Bistro in Boston. The dish was served with pan roasted potatoes (baked in skins, cooled, cut into cubes then pan roasted in olive oil) and peas with a cream-wine sauce. I'll give just the salmon since the sauce has cream & butter. I've made this numerous times, often doubling the recipe, sometimes with no sauce (which is spooned onto the plate with fish resting atop), sometimes with a crab butter cream sauce ala Paul Prudhomme (very rich). Served on a platter with potatoes scattered around. Yum!
Roasted Salmon with Horseradish Crust
Preheat oven 350
2lb center cut salmon fillet with skin
In a bowl combine:
3/4 C fresh white bread crumbs
3 shallots, sliced thin
1/2 t freshly grated lemon zest
1/4 C coarsely chopped walnuts
1 6-oz bottle horseradish, drained & squeezed dry (about 3/4 C)
1/4 C chopped mint leaves
1/4 t fennel seeds lightly crushed
1/4 t red pepper flakes
1/2 t minced garlic
2 T olive oil
Arrange salmon, skin side down, on well-greased baking sheet, press the horseradish mix onto it, pressing gently to make it adhere, and bake the salmon for 25 to 30 min or until cooked through.
Monkland Village
Edit---was responding to eat2much re the pharmacy closing on Monkland. Must have fat fingered the key board again.
The Epicerie Gourmet is expanding into the pharmacy, a 2 month reno. They were having a 40% off sale there today. The first time I've seen more than one person in the store!
Bronte vs. Le CC&P for Birthday
It's been awhile (well not that long.....prix fixe lunch at Decca77 was really wonderful) since a meal has lingered in my head everyday, but a couple of friday's ago hub & I dined at CC&P. Wow. We ate at the bar which we like to do, chatting with the staff we found out the the bartenders Mom (or Grandma?) makes the placemats which are made out of rug underlay and bound in leather. Cute. Beautiful space there, but the food was the show, just sensational. Eyes rolling and crossed up into my head....hub knows I'm happy when I do that.
I found the place to have a nice vibe.....not stuffy.....I'm a very young 42 ;-) slurping martini's at the bar, also there was a table with parents and 2 young teens maybe 12-15 y near us....didn't notice if they ordered off the menu Anyway, it was great, but the board has already confirmed that.
Bronte is on the list.......
Quebec restaurant websites: Driving me nuts!!!!
OK, then I won't tell her that her site sucks when she goes live. Just zip it.

C70, thanks for the link, help me work towards my goal of total
food-french-fluency.
Maisonbistro, we're going tonight so I'll consider it a dodged bullet, I'd be sobbing in the loo if the specials were Sammies and Stoup.
Moh, had I known you were a web designer, I would have zipped up to ensure you're nicely coiffed for the spring thaw. Maybe some of the sites are still stuck in the high-flutin' days of too much. Vertically arranged food, foams, truffled-this/truffled-that. Let's hope the sites will go the way of simpler is better, the way lots of cuisine is being prepared these days.
