Big Island - Four Seasons Surf, Sand & Stars Buffet vs. Mauna Kea Clam Bake - HELP

Can anyone give me their opinions on the Four Seasons Surf, Sand and Stars Buffet and/or the Mauna Kea Clam Bake. I will be going to one or the other next Saturday night.

I am also planning on going to Merriman's, Brown's Beach House and Huggo's while there. These seem to show up in the Chowhound boards and other spots most often. Is there anything else I shouldn't miss?

Thanks in advance.

Worth the wait?

The answer is yes... it is worth a wait of 20-30 minutes. If you went to a sit-down restaurant and placed an order, that is approx. how long it would take until your burger came out, so what is the big difference. As other posters have said, the wait at the UWS location is rarely longer than that even when the line is out the door. And whether you like the Shake Shack burger is up to you, but you have to at least try it to be part of the 'Best Burger in NY' conversation.

Per Se Salon Question

I was lucky enough to have lunch in the restaurant last Saturday afternoon. The Salon area was pretty empty... I think you will have no trouble at all. I was there from 12:30-3:30, so I don't think time is a factor. Enjoy!

Best Thai in the UES?

I suggest Sala Thai for takeout/delivery. Nothing spectacular, but solid and dependable. Also, Land is above average and I just tried Osha for delivery last night and it was very good.

Top 5 Most Underrated Restaurants in NYC

OK... I am going to go out on a limb with these two. I am sure many people will disagree, but I would be interested to see if anyone shares my opinion.

Brasserie... I know it is famous and has been around forever, but the food is surely underrated. Their rib steak is the best non-steakhouse steak in the city.

Michael Jordan's Steakhouse... I'm not saying this is a top-tier steakhouse, but I have had very good steaks here. And when you consider the excellent Grand Central setting, it is really a great place to go. If it were called grand Central Steakhouse (and not Michael Jordan's) it would get much more respect.

I think I am going to be in the minority with my opinion, but I think Brasserie is excellent, and one of the most under-rated (but very famous) restaurants in the city. I can't say anything about the prixe fix, but what I do know is that their rib-eye is my choice for the best non-steakhouse steak in New York. And they do a 'spend $50 get $50' birthday deal that makes eating there a bargain. Throw in a landmark room, good, reasonably priced wine and fantastic desserts, and you have one of my favorite places

Try Uptown on 88th and Third. It doesn't turn up on many lists, but the burger is great.

Atlanta Recommendations Please

I will be visiting Atlanta for the first time next week. I would like suggestions for the best places for Southern/Soul Food, especially Fried Chicken, and also Barbecue. And if there are any other places that a visitor shouldn't miss, no matter what the syle of food, I would appreciate hearing about then as well. Thanks in advance.

Does this exist - seeking good wine/prix fixe dinner

If you can do Fri-Sun instead of Thursday, check out the wine dinner at Malone & Porcelli. For $75, you get appetizer/entree/dessert, and all the wine you can drink from 4 choices including Champagne. The menu is standard, with good steaks, and man do they pour that wine freely. I've gone a few times with groups of 8-12 and I don't think I even ever remember eating dessert. Really one of the best deals in NYC.

Tom's Kitchen - Still Open???

I'll be visiting London (coming from New York City) next week, and I have a reservation for Tom's Kitchen on Thursday the 6th. I have heard that his places have gone into administration... I just wanted to make sure that Tom's Kitchen is still open for business. If anyone can help me out with an answer, I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Persian food in NYC?

I will strongly second Persepolis. Also, the same owners just opened Shalizar in the same general neighborhood. I think Persepolis is beter, but Shalizar is pretty new so it will likely improve.

Inexpensive/ great steakhouse

If you are willing/able to go to Hoboken, Arthur's Tavern would be an good choice. Otherwise, I'll second Les Halles. Mixed to negative opinions on this site, but it is good for groups, well-priced and solid if not spectacular

Best BBQ

Dinosaur and Hill Country are both excellent. I can't coment on RUB because I was only there once when it first opened. But if you are trying to impress a girlfriend, I suggest Blue Smoke. It is the nicest restaurant of the group. Try the Texas Salt & Pepper ribs. Dinosaur is a madhouse and Hill Country has you go to different counters to order different items, so it can be difficult to navigate.

Where can I find the best burger on the Upper East Side. I would love it if they would deliver to 86th and 2nd

The burger at Uptown on 3rd between 88th and 89th is excellent. I don't think they deliver. Ottomanelli's and Cafe D'alsace are also very good.

Why is it so popular to bash Peter Luger's?

Just a comment on the supposedly 'rude' waiters... I was there last weekend (Feb. 9) for a Saturday lunch, and the service was excellent. I wish I could remember the waiter's name. We were a dificult table... six adults, one of whom showed up very late and only ordered the (excellent) burger, and two boys ages 10 and 7. Unruly kids, confused orders, last minute changes, about 25 soda refills, spilled drinks - you name it. But our waiter was more than professional, he was nice, especially to my nephews.

As for the Steak, I've been going there 2-4 times a year for more than 15 years, and they do serve the best Steak in the city, and the best I have ever had. Yes, I have had some that were not up to par. I also suspect that they don't serve their best cuts of meat at lunch, which is when I have gone many times lately. But they are still the best, which doesn't mean that many of the other steakhouses in the city aren't also great. And the steak I had last week was right up there with the best I have ever had.

Finally, the bacon. I think Peter Luger's is actually a Baconhouse that serves excellent steak, and not the other way around.

Romantic (inexpensive) dinner in East Village?

How about 9th Street Market. Tiny, cozy and has a fireplace. Good, southern influenced food.

Best restaurants in NYC for Bone Marrow?

Cafe d'Alsace, and it is excellent. Landmarc in the Time Warner Center has it along with the Tribeca location mentioned by an earlier poster. And the Michael Jordan Steak House in Grand Central used to, but I haven't been there in a long time.

Help... need name of new steakhouse in midtown.

Hopefully someone can help me out... I need to know the name of a fairly new steakhouse in mid-town. It is in the location that was formerly a Ruth's Chris... I think on or around 49th and maybe 2nd... I think it may be a woman's name?

Thanks in advance.

It may be a little farther up than you are looking for, but Don Pedro's on 96th and 2nd is very good... Latino-Caribbean.

no tap water - and no good food - at Trattoria Pesce Pasta

I'll also put in a good word for the UES location.

And I hapen to be just back from Italy last week and I know the exact feeling the original poster described. I was looking forward to getting back to NYC to have some good Italian food. (Actually, I had more great meals there than poor ones but a real effort had to be made, and there were a few real clunkers.)

davidburke & donatella

I think this would be an excellent place for a 50th birthday. I've been there a few times... including a Valentine's Day meal with my wife. We experienced none of the problems I have read about on the boards. Service was excellent, waiting time was normal and the food was great. Also, they have one of the best brunch deals in the city. I've been treated with respect every time - even when I have ordered inexpensive wine, which sometimes uspets the high-end spots.
