caterman's Profile
Washington Heights style cold cuts
Agreed -Wasserman & Lemberger is the only butcher that still make Aufschnitz & flavored Salami - I went to Yeshiva in Balto and remember the original owners- Truly the same recipies --Glatt Mart in Brooklyn might bring in product --they both have Star K
& for those of you who remember "Schilds" in W H the all time best deli
Who does Shabbos mode the best?
We have a Thermadore double wall oven -was put in 12 years ago & B'H no problems
The Shabbos mode only closes out the circut board & lights - so the temp can not be altered - We keep items in the oven overnight at 180 - Chulent- Potato kugel even a chicken & beef dish with a sauce -
It is not prerfect for Yom Tov - Then I keep the Meat oven at 225 -250 & Dairy Oven at 325 - depends on the menus
It is not like kitchen aid , where the Star K has an endorsement and where it can work on Yom Tov with changing the temp selection
Whatever you buy get a service contract-
Kosher wine tasting recommendations?
Attended the One israel Fund Dinner last night-at Bridgwaters - Wonderful Event
They had A wine tasting with Shlomo from Herzog Wines with only "Mevushal Wines" & was blown away by the "Shiloh" selections
Shor Barbera 2009 was outstanding & Special Reserve Shiraz 2009 as good about $40.00
Was told that Shiloh has a special proceedure for the Mevushal process that doesn't hinder the nature of the wines - also had Binyamina? Special Reserve Melot - the standard bar served Barkan - Red & White
Turquoise on Union Turnpike in Queens
Had a great meal there New Years Eve- 10 of us - split 6 appetizers- 2 Bottles of Segal Special Reserve Chardonnay and a bottle of that "Blue Stuff" The entrees were very good -My friend thought the Sea Bass was a little skimpy & asked to have it fixed up -no Problem) & the pasta needed more sauce -- I had the Whole half grilled & fried St. Peters Fish- Crispy & Delicious ,with basmati rice & grilled tomato - Problem was that the serving dish was too small -- A great whiskey chocolate cake - a Gratis birthday dessert - Cappuccinos -& Teas with fresh mint
Only Fault was that they don't brew regular coffee -oh well
-the place was rocking- People from 5T-GN -WH
$650 with tax & tip - had a 8:30 resvervation & stayed tiil 12
Service was very attentive & just nice & the owner was around all night
all in all a great evening

Washington, D. C; two 11 year old boys + Grandparents
Was in DC last Jan on winter break with our 10 yr old son & 15 yr old daughter - Went to Eli's
A little $$ but well worth it- Soups were great - the "Burger & fries Kids meal" was extremely large . Just a good meal on a cold day - the only thing bad was trying to find a parking spot- ( the street signs are just bizarre ) Met the owner & he told us that he also owns a Dairy /Pizza place in Silver Spring- (don't remember name) BTW-you are just an hour away from Baltimore & there is plenty to eat there Good Luck
Good luck
Kosher French Macaroons
Haven't been on for a while - Missed out on a lot of good topics ........
Now to "French Macaroons " --They have no bearing to the ITEM (maracrons) that is produced & sold for the Passover Holiday - Those coconut things sold in cans or dipped in chocolate ( some are very good & one of my son's keeps a few cans for after Passover) should not be confused with the delightful authentic cookie with beautiful pastille colors that a real French pastry shop bakes. The only location that I have seen & tasted is Mochableu in Teaneck, N.J. - I know there have been many threads on this restaurant -Some good & most bad - but the bakery section is really outstanding - The owner is French Moroccan & in spite of his obsession with the brick Pizza Oven -His baked good are quite good - another great item they produce is the very petite Melissa cupcakes- they bake parve & dairy - and are $$$$
Southern produce trucks in far eastern Queens, border of Nassau County?
There is a truck stand on Hempstead Ave after Belmont Track before Jamaica Ave -
Always seen mango- papaya - sugar cane ........ Never stopped to buy but your question reminded me of it

Specialty Cake-- like a kosher Charm City Cakes
Try Sylvia Weinstock / 273Church St - NYC 10013
212-925-6698 - swcakes.com
She has O-K supervision for kosher cakes
They have a great web site with pics - Very $$ but fantastic-
miriam mizakura's shalom japan - glatt kosher restaurant from the 80s-22 wooster st
Talking about a blast from the past- remember MINTZ's Buffet on the east side- they had great food as i can remember- The owner invented TOFUTTI in the basement - He sold the buffet business first then TOFUTTI -
Also -remember "Benjamin of Tudelo" on the west 70's . A wonderful restaurant that never made it. Had my first taste of Baby Lamb Chops with Dijon mustard - Couldn't stand the taste of Dijon then & I still don't care for it now -oh well
It had great décor and a Swiss chef - Basically it was misunderstood - a great place that today would be one of New York's best .
Back in the late 70's-early 80's kosher taste buds were only used to Shmulka Bernstein on Essex St. ( which is so sorely missed) J2 for pizza & Yahalom on 47th street for Israeli fare -
& for you real old timers the CROWN DELI on Houston St. - That was a fantastic place-Sawdust on the floor etc...........
washington DC
Was in Washington DC yesterday with 3 kids - Ate at Eli'S 1253 20th St. NW - Very nice place. Chicken noodle soup was real stock broth - the split pea was very flavor full with bits of franks -
Mains came with a simple salad - the grilled salisbury steak with mashed potatoes was perfect ( need to take a nap when i finished) my wife had chicken fajita =great - my daughter had spaghetti & meatballs = just ok . & my sons had steak sub with fries = perfect
the owner was there - a very hospitable Persian fellow - we spoke a little - his brother has a dairy pizza place in Rockville ,MD - Anyway the prices were a little high but we all had a wonderful meal after a full day of sightseeing
Sheep stomach, heart, lungs
As a kid my father ( a kosher butcher) brought heart-lung-brain etc home all the time - My mom made a potted roast a real "Gedemffed " - Still have the taste in memory but today The "entrils" heart-lungs- of a kosher slaughtered animal per USDA is banned - All those items get put aside for animal feed
Small Kosher wedding NYC or within 3 hours of NYC
Try the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point - Melville Hall - It is now open to the general public. Till now you had to have an association with the USMM or Military
Lovely space with dramatic views of Throgs Neck -Perfect for 100
Is it just me? Kosher hamburger mystery...
It happens to all the pre made patties that comes from the Alle plant- It has to do with the machine that makes the patty - Alle private lables for many stores- check the USDA #
It is a weird thing- the patty starts out round & cooks out oval ??? It's the machine that portions it out
Bar Mitzvah venue for 2011/2012
The Tarrytown Doubletree has great space -traditional hotel banquet space but has a great outdoor patio with in & out fireplace
Kosher bakery in Boca Raton?
Glicks Kosher market has a full bakery dept - alot of N Y items
In Delray beach on Atlantic ave next to Carnival flea market is Star Bakery -they have a local hasgacha
Midtown Kosher Food Carts : Moshe's vs Kosher Oasis
Was in midtown yesterday around 1pm (Rock Ctr ) . I always try to get a falafel at Moshe's cart on 46th and no matter at any time of day there is always a huge line . I saw the Kosher Oasis cart on 47th with no line .... well big mistake.... other than the fact that they sell more meal items
the hot dog was served from tepid brown warter- the fries took forever to fry & were limp & the soda case wasn't iced up. $7.00 & i wasn't happy... Went to the Moshe Cart for dessert ......
waited a few min & ordered 4 falafel balls with techina
That hit the spot. The Moshe cart always comes through.
BTW - down 46th street I saw (not kosher) Waffle Truck-WOW now thats a business
will be at the snack and candy expo-what candy/snacks do you want to be kosher?
I agree with Himishgal- there are so many products that have hasgacha
now for that last couple of years i have been wondering why Nabisco's Oreo' cookies are kosher but can't get it on Mallowmars - I heard Mallowmars are only around in the winter months - so Nabisco has a whole summer to figure a way to get Kosher gelatin for the white fluffy stuff. As a kid i remember seeing Lard as an ingredient on Oreos & only wished that one day they would become kosher. Now lets get going on Mallowmars - They always look so good
Kosher at New Yankee Stadium and Citi Field
Who actually runs the the kosher stands at Yankee Stadium & Citi fFeld- and what supervisions do they have
Haven't been to a game at either yet - A friend said that Formost is at Y S
Wil be going after school ends & camp starts with my kids to both - All I hear is "what are we going to eat" .... ? meat or dairy....? All I want to do is see a game & have a beer
New York One Day
By far the best Chinese is Wing Wan in West Hempstead- Not a fancy place but great Chinese food & sushi
What to do with beef bones and short ribs
Check out the kosher blogs on the board -You need a recipe for CHULENT- traditional Shabbath stew
The more bones the better & short ribs (FLANKEN) is the perfect meat
How do you eat sardines?
Saw the postings so...had a can last night - SEASONS brand in olive oil - with some matza left over from passover
buttered the matza - a little salt and 4 cherry tomatoes off the vine- just heaven
My kids thought i was insane- Told them i remember the tin used to be packed with a key to open the can. They said I made that up
Kosher vegan restaurants
Talking about SF -If anyone is in the Bay area go to Herbivore in Berkley Ca.
the best Vegan i ever had . Amazing how Tofu & vegetables can be so good
Family shabbos on Long Island?
Sorry your getting nowhere try the Clinton Inn in Tenafly NJ
It is a small hotel with keyed locks within a "good" walking distance to Ahavath Torah in Englewood
3-4 miles - Also plenty of kosher shopping in Englewood /Teaneck
Also on Rt 4 Before Jones Road exit near the GWB ( Ft. Lee- Englewood Area) there is a Best Western & a Doubletree
Both are in walking distance to Englewood shuls ( A T & Rabbi Genack)
Feeling the pressure, Jersey Kosher halls?
Non kosher catering halls that do not have an official in house glatt kosher caterer allow glatt kosher caterers to come in . The Client pays the facility for use of space - labor & most of the time the beverages inclusive of all liquor & kosher wines. An off premise kosher caterer arranges for Rabbinical (mashgiach) supervisors to "kasher" the TREIFF kitchen & keep an eye on all food preparation done at that facility - also the mashgiach checks the beverages to insure all liquor & wines meet the standard of kashrus of the caterer. Off premise kosher caterers will bring in all food & equipment needed to facilitate the event . This is the same as in a hotel setting also.
Pricing for a hall or a hotel sometimes are about the same. Finding a location with an in house kosher caterer is the least problematic - but NJ has almost no facilities that have that.
It is a lot of work to shop a hall & then shop a caterer - try calling a kosher caterer first & ask for a location recommendation or visa versa - It show that the caterer has a good working relationship with the venu -or ask a hall for a caterer that they enjoy working with - good luck
Family shabbos on Long Island?
Two areas I suggest
The first is Long Beach -South Shore- i mentioned this on another request.. The Allegria - New hotel on the beach
kosher shopping in the five towns & walking Long Beach Shuls - YILB - The Bach
Also Great Neck -North Shore
1- The Great Neck Inn on Cutter Mill Rd
2- The Bayberry On Station Place ?/ (LIRR- GN Station)
Both are walking distance to YIGN - a little more to GN Syn.
Also Plenty of kosher shopping in Great Neck- Great Neck Glatt has take out
Catch a nosh at Bagel Mentch on erev shabbos -
BTW Colbeh ( great persian food) is in the Bayberry Hotel and might have shabbos meals ??
Mazel Tov
Kosher Hotel in NYC Area
The Jackson is closed & really not very romantic in its best days
Try the Allegria = brand new boutique hotel in Long Beach (second summer) with key door locks ( rooms are fabulous) by the ocean & walking to all L B shuls - YI LB, The BACH, etc order a fridge & bring your own food - Great board walk
Also the Ocean Place in Long Branch ,NJ is great- on the water- beatifull boardwalk & beach front - key door locks & walking distance to the DEAL/ Long Branch Shuls (mostly SYs) bring your food & relax
Kosher catering hall/shul for Bar Mitzvah in Brooklyn
Shaare Zion & Mhtan Beach JC are the only regular catering halls in Bklyn. with decorated ballrooms (not a multi use kiddush room) Speak to Jeremy at SZ or Joel at MBJC they are both very knowledgeable & will work with you.
Other than the chasidic halls there are catering halls like the el carib which has to be kosherized with an outside off prem caterer & can get $$$ .
Lincoln Sq also is the only syn hall in the city but there are many event locations that u can choose from with a off prem kosher caterer in Manhattan. Check out an event location web site
Long island has the glatt catering halls & country clubs to choose from
Good luck
Yeshiva Break In L A
Chowhounders - again thanks for your input
Back from the west coast - Didn't get to really dine out in L A / Arrived in the most terrible rain storm ( it was the worst weather the coast has seen in 10 years ) & ran to the first pizza place I saw (Shalom Pizza) - just a pizza store - nothing special -but the fries were made from fresh potatoes . Dinner at Pico Deli- got there right before they closed - pea soup & juicy burger with grilled pastrami were just perfect - kids meals were great - service was ok , they had a hard time setting up for a large group- 11ppl .
Went Shabbos shopping at Glatt Mart - as nice as any 5T kosher supermarket & a great wine section with fantastic pricing - every kosher packaged item that is in NY is there also- fresh breads , pita-laffa-& challa - plenty of snack items for the road
Motzi Shabbos - The hot dog kiosk In "The Grove" was a real hit with the kids & me also (The Pacific Movie Theater allows the kosher food to be brought into the theater) -
Regular hot dogs-veal sausages - chili dogs - fries - just hit the spot-
On the road to S F - stopped in Agora Hills another schwarma place with Chabad R S-
Herbavore in Berkley was the best Vegan I have ever been too - An extensive menu - Kids had pasta - but i had red chili veggies with basmati rice & grilled tofu chicken - fab- My wife ha a veggie burger with salad & fries -
Friends had Moussaka -Ravioli with pesto -& Burritos
Sabra in S F China town was what you all had said- but it was the only meat place
in S F - Went there 2 times - First was with a large group - the owner was having a
melt down -They couln't handle a busy night - Bean soup & the Chummus combo was good- Falaffel balls fresh & green inside - the deep fried whole Talapia was perfect but they ran out of "rice"(in Chinatown?) as the side dish , only fries - Friends had chicken kabobs - a little burnt -service was very poor - 1 waiter - he couldn't keep up - I went to refill the water pitchers myself
2nd time only a few ppl in the place -the waiter remembered - he was very nice
Looking ahead to visit again one day & really try the L A Places
