I want to like Tampa/Clearwater, but I don't. Please help.

Excellent Thai food, good atmosphere. It's near Safety Harbor in the Northwood area where Enterprise meets McMullen Booth

Lunch Palm Harbor/Safety Harbor?

1. Have you tried Whistle Stop, or is that too casual. it's nice to eat outside this time of year.
2. We definitely prefer Ban Thai in Safety Harbor (northwood) to Amarit Thai. Better food at better prices
3. We also love the East Lake Cafe which is in the Publix shopping center by Boot Ranch.

Flamestone American Grill

Been there several times and this place is now our favorite "nice nite out" place. I like that you can get half orders of some things. Very varied menu; nice atmosphere; usually good service, but pretty busy sometimes.

Best tacos in Tampa and Pinellas?

I would hope that any taco that "looked and tasted like tuna" would be called a "tuna taco" on the menu because if I order a taco and get something that in any way reminds me of tuna...there's gonna be trouble, big time trouble, at the taco stand.

Go to Houstons. Mollie is my waitress there. Perfect service and perfect food. Bring your wallet.

Places to Avoid in Pinellas

Had one of the worst dining experiences of my life recently at Piranha's in Clearwater. Decided to use their coupon. Actually feared for my families lives after we ate. The black beans and rice were almost unidentifiable-so bad I actually told the waiter to take them back and make the manager eat them. Don't want to make that mistake again, so...if it's appropriate for a Chowhounds post, can anyone tell me other such places to avoid at all costs around here? I'm sure some of you have been to places that were tempting, but turned out to be so bad you just wanted to warn people. Here's you chance to do your civic duty.

Heading to Orlando, St Petersburg/Clearwater and Tampa – looking for healthy everyday eats and chow-worthy hole-in-the-wall finds

This post is crazy! Every restaurant in Pinellas and Hillsborough are mentioned, almost. BUT if you are still here and want a different kind of place close by to where you are, go up to Safety Harbor and enjoy the Whistle Stop one evening. Outdoor dining, interesting dishes southern inspired seafood and other; live entertainment some nights (Wed adn Fri, i think).

Red Fish Blue Fish- Palm Harbor

Never Never Never eat at Dead Fish Blow Fish. We tried twice. The food was mushy, tasteless and ugly. They cut every corner. It did not seem fresh at all. There are too many other seafood places to waste time here.

TitleThe Mmm Face – Do we really want to watch people eat?

The funny thing is, like with Rachel Ray, you can tell when she really is GAGGING on her fake smile when she tastes some poodlepoop that she finds in those quirky local little dives on $4 a Day. I think she has a quick-side-glance cue to the director that says "grab a bucket quick".

Best Sports Bar (food) in Tampa Bay Area

Every week I drive around trying to find a great sports bar with really great food and atmosphere, but it's getting expensive to just roam. I'm looking for great bar food (wings, nachos, etc) AND a great atmosphere (i.e. lots of noisy peeps and fans). Really like the Press Box for the ATmosphere, but the food is so-so. Love the Varsity Club in Clearwater, but want some strange once in a while. Not really hip to Champions or Hooters or Winghouse or any other shiny places. I need Bucs fans and very hot wings. Any help out there?

Cafe Ponte (Clearwater) update?

Considering Cafe Ponte for anniversary dinner. Have not heard much about it on here lately, but the older posts are all very positive. Anyone been there lately? Is it still as good as people say it used to be? Is it 15th Anniversary Worthy?

Vermont, Burlington and thereabouts

I am from Florida and am going to Burlington for 4 days at the end of September. Would like some suggestions for restaurants and other foodie places (say "cheese") within that area. NEver been any where near there before. Will have wife and child in tow. ONE nice birthday dinner would be great. Can you help?

Lackluster Tallahassee

We visited Tally recently. If I had read these reviews, we would have stopped at Micky D's beforehand and never slowed the car until we were well past Capital Circle. But seriously.....We had a wonderful meal 17 miles south of town at the Ed Ball Lodge. Very nice setting. Excellent service. Delicious bean soup, and perfect fried oyster apetizers. Not chic, but fairly elegant in a lovely dining room on the park grounds.

Clearwater Beach/Tampa restaurant suggestions

Eve's (Formerly Eve's Donut Hole) is in the Woodlands shopping center in Oldsmar, which is where Curlew Road meats Tampa road. Excellent local, popular, famly, type breakfast. Also, not far down Tampa road at Eastlake (McMullen Booth Road) is the East Lake Cafe, which is also a very nice, slightly more "continental" type breakfast place.

Tampa Airport/Brandon food

You didn't say anything about wanting a health food place. Lee Roy Selmon's is NOT one. But, as virtually everyone says, the place is awesome.

Alternative BBQ places - Tampa Bay

I have mentioned Georgia Boys BBQ in Oldsmar a time or two on here. It is the proverbial hole-in-the-wall, but very authentic southern style soul food barbecue. Very rustic, very delish. May want to get take out, and go to the park for a picnic.

I just do not understand the continued recommendations of Kojaks and Jimbo's, as I have just stopped going to either because it was just not very good.

There is a new place open in Safety Harbor callled Brady's world class BBQ, or something like that. Really tasty sauce, but a tad expensive for my tastes. It's right off main street in an old house.

WildFish is deceased

For those who care, the Wild Fish in Pinellas County is closed. Ate there once and thought it was really delish. Obviously, no one else agreed.

Cheap Eats in Tampa

Lee Roy Selmons is always good. But for economy and good food, you can't go wrong with 2 places that kids would love: A. Havana Village in Tampa, 1 bock north of Kennedy on Dale Mabry. Very economical, lots of food, delicious Cubans. B. In St. Petersburg, MLK Blvd., don't miss Coney Island, which is a circa-1940's hot dog joint with original, authentic food, counters, equipment (and waitresses). Very cheap hot dogs and burgers that are sinfully delicious

Tampa Airport/Brandon food

Since you will be staying near the airport, do not miss going to Lee Roy Selmon's, which is very nearby. Nice sports bar is included, price is right and the food is always wonderful. You and your boss will love it and it is purely local.

On vacation in the Tampa Area

I don't know why so few people miss recommending one of our really great local restaurants for out of towners, but you really should try Lee Roy Selmon's. The food is always so very good; sort of all-american, country type food in a very nice atmosphere. Just an excellent restaurant all around. The original is in Tampa, by Fleming's and Roys. The newer one is in Largo, much closer to where your will be. You will love the food; guaranteed.

Since you are on the beach, you might want to try Dockside Dave's. After many great rec's on this website, I finally went there for a grouper sandwich and really loved the place. Don't miss the onion rings. Very good seafood, and a consistent Chowhound favorite in this area.

Don't Miss doing a meal at Ted Peters.

Any Hope in Panama City Beach?

Mama Coles! That's it! Thank you very much. I wanna go back, but... I know that they could not have rebuilt that shack and that atmosphere. There would just be no way to replicate that bit of soulful southern history.

Thanx for the input. I am actually surprised by the favorable reviews. We are staying at the lodge for the night, so I can give a full review at the end of June.

On vacation in the Tampa Area

It would help if we knew kinda where you are staying, since a visit to "Tampa" could mean anything in a 2 county area, BUT if you are in the north Pinellas area in the a.m., the I highly recommend the East Lake Cafe for very wonderful breakfasts. You can get regulars, like eggs and omelets, plus more elegant things like homemade muffins, stuffed waffles and parfaits, etc. The service is excellent and the owners have really created a very nice dining experience which is not a diner but rather a breakfast restaurant. The quality is always excellent and the prices are very reasonable. Plus, you can eat outside or inside. .

Wakulla Springs Lodge dinner

The family is probably dining at this place in late June. Anyone ever tried it? Do I need a head's up? Should we drive to Spring Creek instead?

Soft Shell Crab near Tallahassee

I haven't lived in T-town since 1983, BUT back then the Spring Creek Restaurant was jsut the best. At that time, Spring Creek consisted of 2 things: One small boat dock and One small restaurant, so you can imagine the freshness of the fish. I'm sure it's changed, but from the rec's I see here, I would go there in an aging, cholesterol-choked heartbeat.

Any Hope in Panama City Beach?

I appreciate the suggestions, and will report back.
About 20 years ago I lived in Panama City. There was a soul food restaurant (really, just an old shack/house) near downtown which was run by an old african american lady and her family. The foood was to die for; greens, chicken, taters; real, southern SOUL food. It was packed with the city's movers and shakers every lunch. CAN anyone from that area tell me the name? Is it still there? In all my years, I've never seen another place like it, and I wanna go back.

Any Hope in Panama City Beach?

The Fam is going to PCB for 3 days in June. I used to live there, but don't remember any memorable eateries. REally hoping to avoid purely touristy places, so I'm hoping someone can make a few recommendations for some (a) good, local family type places, (b) One good place for 1 fairly elegant meal for my high maintenance wife; and (c) some place really funky and down-home just for a hoot. P.S. I abhor Captan Anderson's, if it's stil there, but another good local seafood place would be welcome.

BBQ caterer in Pinellas (north or south)--recs, please?

I would suggest Georgia Boys BBQ, which is located in Oldsmar, on St. Petersburg Dr.. Very downhome, southern style BQ. Almost too good to believe.

Sycophant on Rye

My level of thank yous depends on my server's level of interruption. Thank you's can be thanks or they can be "that's enough, thank you". If the server requires my interraction, to answer a question, make a choice, etc., then a TY is called for. If they are constantly interrupting conversations needlessly, then the TY is really a "leave us alone, please". Same with water refills, new bread, etc. If they come by and simply refill, then maybe a TY at first, then I just let them do their job. I am sure that responding to someone everytime you drop a few ounces of water into their glass gets pretty old.

Mother's Day Brunch in Tampa/Pinellas County

I highly second this suggestion. The place is beautiful, with the dining room sitting high above the beach with great views. Live music (violins, quartets, etc.), very professional service; a desert room/table to die for and just excellent quality food. Champaigne gratis. It is far superior to Landry's and to Shephards, IMO. This is one of the best dining experiences you can have for an "occasion".
