Anyone remember the Oreo brand oreo-mint ice cream?

I don't know about national brands, but if you live in or have reason to visit Boston, JP LIcks has a mint oreo flavor that's one of my favorites.

Vietnamese lunch in Dot tmw.

Ba Le in Fields Corner rearranged itself a few months ago -- there are now a few tables in the back that usually have space so that you can sit down with your Banh Mi.

need recipe for non-dairy caramel sauce

I've been wanting to try this coconut dulce de leche recipe since I found it -- I just haven't had a reason to make it yet. It gets decent reviews and sounds delicious.

Peanut butter cookies

That's been my go-to recipe also since I discovered it a few years ago. I find the cookies hold together better when you use commercial PB rather than all natural (which doesn't stop me from using natural PB if that's all I have). These are also easily turned into peanut blossoms by baking them without any chocolate chips and adding the hershey's kisses just after the cookies come out of the oven.

Help finding a bakery that won't break my bank.

As I was reading about Lakota, that's just what I was thinking -- the filled cookies are amazing...I also like the macaroons. The butter cookies are pretty, but they're just butter cookies. Stick them together with mocha cream and dip them in chocolate and you have one of my favorite cookies ever.

Looking for the best cornbread in Boston

It's not Boston exactly, but Persy's Place, which has a few locations south of Boston and on the Cape has my favorite crumbly sweet grilled cornbread. We usually schedule our trips to the Cape to coincide with brunch at the Middleboro location...

favourite melomakarona or finikia recipe?

I think I'm working off the same finikia recipe...I don't have a more healthful opportunity, but the recipe does halve well if just not eating quite so many helps!

Where to buy dinner rolls and jarred chestnuts for Thanksgiving?

Does anyone have more suggestions for jarred chestnuts, particularly in Boston or south of Boston? Russo's is the wrong direction and Trader Joe's was out when I went (phoo). Thanks!

Restaurants with "Rules"

I have worked in fields where the level of urgency really is that high and have no trouble with someone taking a call in certain cases. However, in my experience, the vast majority of people who are on their cell phones or blackberries do not fall into that category.

Grinch Themed Office Breakfast - really!

There's a Nigella Lawson recipe that might fit the bill -- thins slices of ham wrapped in pesto crepes. It's not the Grinch but it's Dr. Seuss and green....

a question about lactose intolerance

You're not necessarily having a psychological reaction to yogurt -- I think it gets back to the different flora for different folks discussion above. Some yogurt most days has helped my lactose intolerance and I'm okay with moderate amounts of hard cheese and higher fat dairy products and a little milk in my coffee. I can't digest ice cream but that doesn't necessarily stop me. But my mom, also lactose intolerant, reports the worst reactions from yogurt. So go figure...

Osaka Shabu opening in Fields Corner

It opened Sunday and husband and I ate there Monday and would agree 100% with Chris M. We also thought it was a good value and were stuffed by the time we ate every scrap of food.

Harvard Square for dinner

Another dis-recommendation for Red House -- I love the atmosphere and the menu but the actual food is always disappointing.

On the very casual side, I was thinking Cambridge One (which is pizza, but really nice pizza). And don't forget to leave room for Burdick's hot chocolate for dessert.

Food scrap collection for composting?

This doesn't really help in Cambridge, but Boston sells compost bins -- it's listed as $45 for the compost bins right now but I would swear when I bought mine l(along with a closable bucket for in-kitchen use) last spring it was cheaper so there may be better deal closer to gardening season. The bins can be adjusted for size -- I used the smallest size because the yard is small and the amount of sun limited. I compost most vegetable scraps (not banana or citrus peels) but am scrupulous about avoiding dairy and meat scraps because of rats. No problems so far, and I don't want any...

Help me develop a new easter cheesecake

Nigella Lawson had a recipe for a chocolate cake (possibly flourless...sorry, memory is failing) that was sort of a nest for colorful chocolate easter eggs. I think there may have been a chocolate frosting or ganache layer in between the cake and the eggs. Maybe someone else remembers. I would imagine you could do something like a chocolate cheesecake "nest" with the eggs sprinkled on at the last minute.

making a break from the heartland

I agree with Cassis that FH is fun to walk through but not good for actual food. There's a Trader Joe's on Boylston across the street from the Pru that strikes me as better for easy snacks and breakfast foods (juice, milk, cereal, okay packaged baked goods, tons of trail mixes, granola bars, etc.). I'm trying to think of good bakeries nearby for freshly made breakfast treats but coming up blank -- maybe others have suggestions.

Thinking of Ethiopian, Addis Red Sea in the South End isn't really on the T but it's less than a mile from the Pru, which might be walkable at least one way with a 5-year old, and a really quick cab ride in any case.

how to doctor up brownies from a box??

I agree with all the Ghiradelli mix fans. One of my favorite ways to doctor them is to dump a couple of big boxes of junior mints (or half junior mints, half chocolate chips) on top of your just out of the oven brownies, let them get melty until you can evenly spread them over the top of the brownies -- yum. Works with all kinds of other chips too depending on your mood.

Dunkin Donuts Milky Way Hot Chocolate

Wow -- White Hen has good hot chocolate? Who knew? I'll have to check it out I don't really like Starbucks' version -- tastes a little chemical-y to me.

OT on this board but in Boston my best hot chocolate treat is Burdicks...

Pre-theater in Harvard Square

Some good suggestions here but I would toss out the Red House, unless someone vouches that their food has improved recently. Their menu always looks good to me, the service is pleasant, I think the atmosphere is cute, but the food is always disappointing. I've never had an entree that wasn't overcooked/oversalted/underseasoned, etc.

Darwin's? Good sandwiches, lousy service - more of a place to grab lunch than eat a decent pre-theater dinner.

Cookbook for college kids [Moved from Food Media and News]

Ditto this -- even better if you can find a compact/paperback version. My mom gave me one 15 years ago that is held together by a rubberband, but it was great because it had all the basics and was portable. It went with me to college, to a year abroad, to multiple apartments and weekends away at somebody's cottage.

converting muffin recipes

I do this pretty regularly (also convert muffins to quickbreads and back again). You definitely don't need to adjust the oven temperature. Obviously the time is less but I can't give you exact numbers because I'm terrible about writing them down. I usually start at about half the time (probably a few minutes longer than half) and then start peeking. Assuming you know what your muffins are supposed to look like (how gold they get, etc.) it works pretty well.

Also, Oreo was my first cat ever. Love the handle.

The nit-picky cook/baker: what shortcuts do you take, and what shortcuts make you cringe?

I wouldn't give nasty sugar cookies a second thought, but I have a serious weakness for the peanut blossoms as long as the cookie part is homemade. The flourless PB cookie recipe is so crazy easy and good there's no excuse not to make it -- but I like them equally well with Hershey's kisses or good dark chocolate. I think kisses are one of my comfort food items, which doesn't stop me from liking better chocolate just as well.

Need a dessert idea for Christmas dinner

This epicurious chocolate cranberry tart is gorgeous and not too rich -- the chocolate is countered by the cranberries. It's an unexpected combination and it really is pretty -- big hit for me at assorted Christmas dinners.

Authentic Boston Food as Christmas Gifts?

I used to really love Dancing Deer -- especially the molasses cookies and the lime ones. Over the past several years as they've gotten bigger and bigger, every time I had one the cookies were stale. Still better than somebody else's commercially packaged cookie, but not really fresh and special. Anybody else know what I'm talking about?

Swedish Holiday Recipes Please!

I third the glogg recommendation. Growing up we always spent Christmas with neighbors of Swedish descent who had a glass or two before dinner. I didn't understand why the grown-ups were in such mellow, pleasant spirits all evening until I was finally old enough to try the glogg myself...
