Wink Lives! But R.I.P. Ruby Grapefruit.
I am a devotee of Grace Grapefruit. I tried the Ting with my Bacchus Roti, but I prefer the tarter flavor of the Grace product. Plus its cheap, and available!

ISO: Gum Base for Making Chewing Gum
I'd like to make some chewing gum as a fun children's activity. But I'm having trouble finding gum base in Toronto or online in Canada. I found it at Lenner's which is a US store, but shipping is a third more than the product itself.
Can anyone suggest a slightly more local place to buy Gum Base for the making of chewing gum.
Best Prices this Week for: Unsalted Butter, Large Eggs, Baker's Chocolate, Unbleached Flour, Rice Krispies etc.
I need to bake about 50 dozen Brownies and Rice Krispie Squares this week. I need to buy the supplies and as you can imagine the small savings really start to add up on such a large batch.
I'm hoping that someone might have some ideas where I can get the following items on sale today or tomorrow.
Unsalted Butter
Large Eggs
Baker's Chocolate
Unbleached White Flour
Rice Krispies (or generic)
Marshmallows
I'm located downtown east, so I prefer stores on that end of the city.
Many Thanks!
GTA Pick-Your-Own Raspberries etc., Wittamore's etc.
Today I went to a Wittamores to pick Raspberries and anything else seasonal. I have been less and less into Wittamores over the past decade but today was the last straw. They are now charging a $4 fee (which is deducible from your purchase) per head for admittance.
I asked about the quality of the Raspberries and was told they were great. I got into the small patch and found that it was not just picked over, but most of the berries were unripe. There was another section further away laden with berries, but a woman named Violetta yelled at us to not pick in the only section that had ripe berries. Then when we left less than 15 minutes later, they were very rude and did not want to give us our money back. I eventually got the money back. I but I will never go to Wittamores again.
Does anyone have any other PYO places that you can recommend? Farms located in East end are preferable. I am very interested in finding an organic PYO.
Coffee Shop with Free WiFi (Downtown Toronto)
Any places for free wifi, that are not Starbucks (sorta-free wifi), around the Dundas St. west and University area? The only place I can think of is the Apple store, but there must be others a bit closer...
Hidden away, independent cafes, worth making a special trip to visit.
I am a huge fan of Bisogno at Sherbourne and Adelaide. It is one of the few places in Toronto I will consume espresso.
Von the owner is very friendly and remembers his customers names and drinks. Von pulls a great cup every time. He has three types espresso beans, including 49th Parallel, Intelligencia - Black Cat, and his special blend. The beans are ground freshly for each cup!
He loves espresso and expresses it in his incredibly clean and regularly maintained espresso machine, grinders as well a paying attention to all the little details. Heated cup & spoon, freshly ground beans, correct amount of water in an Americano etc.
Lucky for me I live in the building so I can pad down at 7am for my morning double.
Another place in the area I like for espresso, but isn't really a cafe, is Carpe Diem. Its a small Italian pizza place specializing thick crust pizza and very well made espresso. The owner/cook/chief bottle washer is a recent Italian immigrant. He take pride in is many and varied espresso blends. He makes an incredible decaf espresso!!!
Carpe Diem is located on King E, just east of Sherbourne. I feel quite lucky to have such incredible espresso options on my doorstep.
Squeaky Curds! T-4 Days...
I just got a phone call from the cheese monger who sell at the Wednesday - Nathan Phillips Square farmers market. Awhile ago I asked him to call me when had fresh curds at his stall. He told me they will be have fresh squeaky, white curds this coming Wednesday. I think he said a 1/4 bag is 5.75.... I had him reserve three bags for me... I feel some homemade poutine coming up. I'm so pleased he called me, now I can be sure to get some chicken bones for the gravy... woooohooo
BEST BURGERS IN TORONTO!! ??
I am a huge fan of the burger at Paddingtons Pub at the St. Lawrence Market, the meat is incredibly tender, and almost requires no chewing... very flavorful. freshly hand made patties with meat from the market. you cannot get better. my only issue is the limited toppings, but with meat like this, there really is little need for toppings. I usually get the banquet burger....yummy. I had one on Wednesday. If you get it from the take out part of the restaurant its only $4.15. Fabulous value...
Interesting Wedding Locations in Toronto
The company I work for had a daytime event at the Berkeley Church. It was in the winter and the hall/church was freezing. The facilities were a bit rustic, to be polite. And the food was terrible. The chef must fancy himself an artist. But I found no art, in terms of inspiration, ingredients, presentation and especially taste. Some kind of Perch "fritter" which reminded me of a giant ravoli with very little filling. As I recall their was a poached pair for dessert that was in no way thrilling consider the hype... For me that place is a miss...

Candy Making Equipment Online Stores & Shipping to Canada
I have been working with Candy a bit lately and want to branch out further, I need some Hard Candy and Lollipop molds and other equipment. There are various places to get these items online with a varying degree of selection, price, and shipping issues. I'm in Canada and many of these places seem to only ship USPS priority, resulting in huge shipping fees. Or they charge an extra 10% fee on international orders. With the Canadian dollar in the toilet I'd prefer to not add extra cost to the order.
Thus I'm looking for any tips for a online candy supplies & equipment store which has reasonable prices, ships to Canada by regular USPS and doesn't charge an extra fee for international orders... Am I hoping in vain? TIA

Where can I fill my Propane Tank downtownish?

Where to get: ketchup cups, like McDonald's, for Jelly Shots...
Thanks guys, I raided McDonald's last night, and will try Harvey's tonight...I have these paper cups in the past and i find its way easier to eat the jelly shot, than the plastic shot glasses. The one plus of the plastic shot cup is that any garnish you float is visible....

July/August 2008 DESSERT COOKBOOK OF THE MONTH: The Perfect Scoop and David Lebovitz' Website
I made his basic vanilla, using the custard. It was lovely except I found it very rich, at many points the roof of my mouth felt covered in butter. I would like to try again but I'd prefer to reduce the fat. I think the recipe called for 2 cups cream and 1 cup whole milk. I was thinking about reversing that and having only 1 cup of cream and two of whole milk. I'm a bit of a ice cream novice, I'm not sure if this would work out. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Where can I find Mini-Hamburger (aka Sliders) Buns?
I'm not doing real sliders. These will be mini-burgers done on the BBQ. to add to the heresy I will be adding Stilton to half the meat for a mini-cheeseburger option.

Gelatin in bulk, downtown?
In years past, may years actually I made Jello shots at a few parties. They were a huge hit. Now that I've aged a bit, I'd like to attempt to devise my own classy jelly shots for a party I'm hosting. I need a few ounces of Gelatin to use for the party and experiments. Does anyone know if its possible to buy Gelatin powder in bulk downtown? I'd rather not fool with individual packets. Also I've seen Gelatin sheets referred to in an LA Times article on the classy jello shot. (http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-cocktailsrec1oct10,1,6415959.story) Maybe that is an option, but where would I obtain such a thing?

Loose Tea in Toronto
Capital Tea no longer has retail location but can be access on the web. http://www.capitaltea.com/
the owner is very knowledgeable and helpful. If you are looking for something in particular or have an idea of what you want, give him a call, and describe what you want, he will be able to recommend a few items...
