Quetion re: resto burger
I believe the menu states it contains Fatback, but if you aren't big into pig that wouldn't make much sense.
I personally loved the burger at resto, but I'd be quite ticked if it meant I broke my Kosher/Halal, or just dislike of the porcine flesh.
Franny's Wait on a thursday night
Hey everyone, I'm looking to meet with my inlaws (who will be in southern Brooklyn) at kind of a midway point to us (Washington heights, Manhattan). I figured this would be a good chance to meet up at park slope and go to Franny's, since I've wanted to try it for a while now.
I'm a bit worried though, since they don't take reservations I've heard the wait can be pretty long, so I was wondering about what the wait is like on thursday nights? I'd be willing to wait for a while, but I'm not sure if my fellow diners would be that interested in waiting for local seasonal italian food :).
Thanks for your help!
Suggestions for nephew's 10th b-day itinerary (and his 1st trip to NYC)
Pizza and Smack together? I think you just made my wifes day. She loves s'mack, but the LES is a bit of a hike to get there from washington heights, so if we have business in the area we'll stop in, but that's rare. UWS, we could go anytime, awesome!
Help! My Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day won't rise!
Sounds good congrats on figuring out the main issues! One thing I've found, it really helps get a good bench proof and oven puff is to stick the loaf in the microwave on it's lowest power for about 3 minutes, maybe a bit more till it's room tempature or barely warm to the touch. Then just let it rest for another 30 minutes, and into the oven. This generates a much better rise I find then the instructions 30 min- 1 hour just on the counter.
Rooftop Bars in Manhattan
How about the martini bar on the roof sculpture garden of the met? I can't guarantee the food will be any good, but it should be a really fun experience http://www.metmuseum.org/visit/dining/
When cooking for your family, do you cook based on your taste or for others?
My wife only likes white meat chicken and seafood for animal based protien.
I used to franken cook, where I would take the things I liked, such as spicy food, beef, pork, and then just sub out the things my wife didn't like for things she did, chicken, shrimp, mild spicies. The results were generally... unispiring. Within a year we were pretty damn sick of chicken and shrimp. now I think both of our tastes have adjusted a bit, and I got over my belief that every meal needed meat.
Our meals are now 90% of the time vegitarian, with lots of beans, rice, eggplant and garlic. If there' nice fish at the market, or a sale on chicken that reaches the plate, and when we do have animal protien, it get's lavished with attention, to make sure it's perfectly spiced and delicious. I still make things too spicy for her sometimes though lol, I have to work on that one. I've stopped buying shrimp out of ecological concerns.
I'm sure that will all get thrown out the window again when we have kids, heh.
Best food shops and markets
Union Square Greenmarket is a must. I think Fairway is pretty awesome, especially the harlem location, though it's a pain to get back to the subway with fully loaded bags of goodies. If you like meat or seafood the cold room is simply great.
Beer is Food, Where are the Best Beer 'Establishments' in Manhattan
For modern Belgian food, Try Resto. There aren't as many taps, most belgian beers lose much of their character when force carbonated and poured off from keg, but there are over 50 different bottles, each served in their appropriate glassware. Order a "Kwak" for a really unique serving vessel ;). I dig the food, but it's not a favorite on these boards.
David Copperfield is also supposed to be quite good. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1366
The other selections here are quite good Ginger man, DBA, Blind Tiger, maybe take a trip on the L to billy burg and hit up barcade if you dig retro arcade machines and really good beer.
Also in the outer boroughs, the Czech Beer Garden in astoria http://www.bohemianhall.com/home.htm will give you a different flavor of drinking then the Munich concept.
Good luck! It doesn't get as much press as boston in terms of being a beer town, but it's got great beer bars.
Best cubano Manhattan
I haven't been to any of the downtown spots, but I really like Floriditia in Washington heights (not related to the harlem restaraunt). It's not as fancy as some others, very light on the sauce, pillowy enriched Cuban bread pressed down, and really crispy tasty pickles. If you are in the neighborhood pick one up :)

Restaurants near Columbia Presb. Hospital
I was in there a couple of months ago and they gave me a dumfounded look when I asked for Pernil. I'm not sure if it's a rotating special, or something that's come or gone recently. I'd love to try me some though!
Restaurants near Columbia Presb. Hospital
Most of the food in this area is Dominican, albeit very similar to cuban food. My personal favorites,
1. Malecon- the roast chicken is great, and a great deal, the rest of the food is kinda bleh.
2. Floridita- Knock out Cubano sandwich, get it with some Tostones for a truly great lunch.
I've also heard praise for nuevo Caridad between 171st and 172nd, but haven't been there myself.
If you want something more upscale Plum Pomidor is nice, Great fries, mussells are good. If you want a tasty sandwich, Ju Ju on 168th just off broadway (across from the ambulance bay) makes good ones, great smoked turkey on brie. And the grilled sandwiches at the neighboring university deli are surprisingly great.
If you want fancy dominican, hop the A up to Dyckman and find Mamajuana north of fort tryon park. What I've had has been good, not amazing, but I hear people speak of their roast pork in reverant whispers, next time I go that's what I'm getting.
At most of the dominican places in the neighborhood, roast chicken, fried pork or Mofongo are safe bets.
Have fun, I've been living here a year now and I still haven't hit up all the neighborhood joints.

Los Angelino's short visit to NYC in September..where to get...
I'll go with what I know, BEER.
in terms of just ale houses, the blind tiger, and DBA are probably the best pair of beer bars in Manhattan, and the ginger man in midtown is also excellent, but it can get kind of a fratboy vibe in the evening.
If you like Belgian beers, Resto is freaking great. I personally love the food (the burger and beef cheek carbonade mmmmmm.... though the fries are a bit weak), but it gets mixed reviews here. But they have an amazing selection of belgians, and a staff that really knows their beers. When I ordered a Rodenbach (Belgian sour) they actually knew enough to warn me that flemish reds are a different breed.
If you can stand some hipsters and long lines, Barcade in Billy burg is fun, good selection of beers, always something nice on cask, and it's filled with 80's arcade machines in various states of disrepair.
Brooklyn is the american Cask ale paradise, if that's your deal, i'm sure you could find more info on the outer boroughs boards.

You haven't heard the last of Mei Lai Wah!
Eater updated, the original chef and original employees are returning at least.

I hope it is, I moved to NY just in time for this place to close :(
Please Help a Tourist
Philly is the real soft pretzel heaven IMO. The best soft pretzel I've had in the city was at the Ginger man, which also has a great selection of beers. Even then, it's not that far past the street vendors, especially if you hit up the busy ones so it's reasonably fresh.
3) There's plenty of fine dining in Manhattan, but if you really want to get to the heart of NYC, you practically have to leave the island. If you want a taste of neighborhoods, the lower east side still has Katz's for a jewish style deli, barney greengrass ect. For chinese, there ar elots of good Chinatown suggestions, or hit up Shzechwan (I know, I butchered it) gourmet, or look in the outer boroughs for info on queens. Go grab a slice at one of the coal oven joints, lombardis, Grimaldis, what's the one in manhattan?
Alternatively, head up town and get soul food in Harlem (I've heard good things about Mannas and Charlies) or up to washington heights for domincan food. The Mofongo house on Dyckamn and broadway, Malecon on 175 and broadway, Floridita in that neighborhood for a great cuban sandwich.

Where can I buy A LOT of tomatoes
You may want to try the little corner grocers in china town. Often times they are selling the fruit that would be going bad in a day or two, so as long as you can use it quickly, they sell it for mind blowingly cheap. No idea about the quality, but for sauce you'll be cooking out most of the texture any way.
Where to buy yuca/plantains below 96th st?
You mean they don't sell them at every bodega in manhattan? I think I'm becoming Washington heights centric lol.
United Palace Theatre- 175th and Broadway - Help.
Malecon is great, and right there. For something a bit more upscale, but still pretty laid back, head down to Plum Pomidoro on 168th and broadway. I've had the steak (good) the mussels (very good) the fries (WOW) and the chipotle chicken sandwich (Okay not innovative anymore but tasty). They have a few nice beers on the menu
Coogans at 169th and broadway has a really fun atmosphere but the food is about the same as you'd get at any chain restaurant. I know they were running specials for the concert tonight.
If you are into belgians, In Vino Veritas has the best selection of belgian beers in the neighborhood, and their tapas style finger snacks are really tasty.
Good coffee in NY???
Fellow displaced CAer and Petes fan, I've been impressed with some of the roasts over at fairway (harlem branch). Good stuff there :)
full leaf, loose leaf tea - where to buy?
Kalustyans had some nice teas if I remember correctly, though tea isn't the primary focus.
The tea bins were located upstairs.
