Single malt scotch in Greater Miami

Just moved from Boston where I had Federal as a scotch source. Can anyone recommend a good source for single malt scotch in Miami? Anywhere between North Miami Beach and Ft Lauderdale would be best, but I'd like to hear about places outside that range, too. Would be interested in finding out who has a wide (and interesting, e.g., independents) selection, who has good prices, and also whether anyone holds semi-regular tastings like Joe at Federal in Boston.

Thanks a lot!

Single malt whiskey (Scotch), best Boston Cambridge sources for?

The best source in Boston for single malt scotch is Federal Wine and Spirits, particularly if you're looking for something less standard, more interesting, independent, etc. Ask to speak to Joe. Any decent liquor store would carry standard bottlings of Talisker, HP, and Macallan, though.

Abeles & Heymans Franks

I've really enjoyed the Lower East Side brand sausages recently. I think they're much better than the A&H franks. It's been too long since I last had Romanian to compare, but other than Romanian I think they're the best I've had.

Laphroaig Vs. Ardbeg

I'd suggest the Ardbeg 10. If you were going with an older Laphroaig or the Quarter Cask, I'd say Laphroaig is easier for an Islay-newbie than Ardbeg. But I find the Laphroaig 10 to be rough around the edges. In contrast, although the Ardbeg is heavily peated, you'll also get some fruit and other flavors. And the Ardbeg 10 is more refined than is the Laphroaig 10. All IMO - maybe others would disagree.
Also, I'm sure others will add that neither Laphroaig nor Ardbeg is the gentlest introduction to Islay. Something more like a Bowmore or Lagavulin might be a good place to start (not counting the not peaty Islays).

A good "gateway" single malt scotch?

Balblair 1997 might be another light, floral option.

Single Malt for a Gift

I'm pretty sure I've seen it locally (Boston) recently. A quick check of a couple of places online shows it for $70-80, unless they're actually out of stock:

Single Malt for a Gift

I might consider Talisker 18.

Fort Lauderdale near Nova

Davie, thanks.

Fort Lauderdale near Nova

Does anyone know of the kosher food situation near Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale? I know about Cafe Emunah, but it's pretty far from there. Thanks.

i want to surprise the hubby with a great single malt for christmas

How'd he like it?

Best Falafel

Mama's Vegetarian in Philly is the best I've had, at least in the USA.

I would highly recommend the Speymalt Macallan 1970 37 year old (bottled by Gordon & Macphail). It's something special. You should be able to find it for $300 with a little poking around.

The great single malt!!!

Amity Wine and Spirits in New Haven had it for $50 two weeks ago, too.

Port Wine Cheese - HELP!!!!

I could be remembering wrong, but I think I've seen it at Pomegranate in Brooklyn. Maybe worth a phone call.

What to do with beef bones and short ribs

For the short ribs: http://books.google.com/books?id=JY4RSkW8NWcC&pg=PA91&lpg=PA91&dq=steven+raichlen+argentinian+cross-cut+ribs&source=bl&ots=fMw1kXJEeC&sig=i5yQ3WiNTdNJo--9rf4u0lUDQis&hl=en&ei=WtbiS77pKMKAlAfYxeyuAg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBUQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false

If the link doesn't work, it's basically salt and pepper, rub with generous amount of garlic, olive oil, Italian seasoning (or oregano), hot pepper flakes. (All of the above on both sides.) Adjust the proportions to your tastes, but I've never thought I put too much, only too little, so be general with the spices. Cover the ribs with saran wrap and let them sit for a while, a few hours is best. Then bbq on the grill.

Please Help-I need a GREAT Single Malt Scotch

Another strong rec for Federal Wine & Spirits. Ask for Joe, tell him what you posted here, and he'll take care of you. He can taste you on things if you care to taste, but either way, he'll help you find something in your price range that's a bit more uncommon (like a Blackadder bottling).

Quebec City

Does anyone know about kosher in Quebec City? Thinking about going for a weekend...

G & M Speymalt Macallan 1997

Has anyone tried this bottle? Any opinions to share? I've had an unbelievable older Speymalt Macallan, but haven't had a chance to try this and it's relatively cheap at a local store...
Thanks!

ou gatorade is out!

At Target in Boston, the low calorie bottles have an OU and the regular ones don't yet...

tootsie rolls kosher ...

What about Dots? Can those be consumed without a hechsher?

Gordon & Macphail Highland Fusilier

In Brookline, MA - do you know it?

Gordon & Macphail Highland Fusilier

Has anyone tried the Gordon & Macphail Highland Fusilier, 5 y/o? Can a 5 y/o be worth it? (Keeping in mind that it's on sale for $20, so "worth it" can be fairly liberal.)

What's the peatiest, smokiest scotch?

Exactly what I'm talking about. If you're thinking of Laphroaig, Ardbeg, and Lagavulin, and even Bowmore, you're going to have a similar reaction to HP. Although HP is very good (and I personally like HP more than Talisker).

People do talk about smoke in HP, but it's very much relative. Compared to many Islays, HP is not smokey or peaty. Compared to many Highlands, it has smoke. But when people are talking about smokey or peaty malts (especially in the context of the "peatiest, smokiest scotch"), the relative-to-Highlands smoke is not usually what they mean.

Kosher at New Yankee Stadium and Citi Field

I thought the hot dogs at Yankee Stadium were better. They were somewhat spicy which was nice.

What's the peatiest, smokiest scotch?

I love Bowmore except for the 17 yr, which I bought and can't drink. It tastes bitter and almost spoiled to me. The 15 yr was one of my favorites for a while.

Hallmark of St. James 25 y.o.

I found it again! In a store called Liquors Galore on Ave J in Brooklyn. Selling for about $80. And pdunn is correct that it's a vatted malt, not single malt, unless the bottle I tried a couple of years ago was different. So a question for Paul - is this something different from the one you identified as a Ben Nevis?

Does Milk St Cafe in Boston have supervision yet?

Here is the email Rabbi Gewirtz sent to the Jewish Boston Listserv. I, like zsero, don't know how long he has/will keep it up.

"This email is in response to a number of requests for clarification.

Please be aware that I am voluntarily providing kosher supervision to Milk Street Cafe on an interim basis while Marc Epstein explores opportunities for permanent hashgacha.
