Maui Trip Report - Eats

I just returned from an 8 day trip to Maui. I wish I had seen Winsy's report before I had left. We stayed on Kanapali. Since we did not want to drive much it limited our choices somewhat to West Maui. I can provide a review of some of the places we ate:

Gazebo - Excellent - We arrived at around 10:00AM and there was a long wait which means standing on a line in the sun next to the pool. The 40 minute wait was worth it though - some of the best pancakes I have had - Banana Mac with a whipped cream and coconut or maple syrup

Compadres - This Mexican restaurant in the Cannery Mall serves a $9 breakfast. The Huevo Rancheros were very tasty. Service was excellent as well.

Old Lahaina Luau - This was our best meal in Maui - it is served buffet style and you really get a chance to sample all Hawaiian specialties. The Kahula pig was excellent as was the Poke, Mahi Mahi, Teriyaki Chicken. And of course the open bar (great Mai Tai's) and show added to the experience.

Maui Tacos (Napali Plaza) - very disappointing - it was quite expensive for counter service. I could have gotten better tacos at Taco Bell.

Aloha Mixed Plate - very good - I thought this was good authentic Hawaiian food - the mixed plates are very tasty. Their location is right on the water so if you time it right as we did you can see a beautiful sunset while eating. They also serve drinks at the top portion of the restaurant.

Lelaini's - Very Good - located in Whaler's Village on the water. Again this provided another stellar location to watch a sunset. They prepare fish 4 different ways. We tried two & were very pleased - very tasty.

Paia Fish Market - Excellent - This was one of the finds of our trip. It is a perfect spot on the way back from the Road to Hana. The town was bustling on a Friday night which made the drive in and parking a bit difficult. You order at the counter but can sit in the restaurant. We ordered simple grilled fish sandwiches. One of the better deals on the island. The piece of fish was fresh and was twice the size of the bun. Order the fries - they are crisp and go well with the sandwich

Cheeseburger in Paradise - Good - There is a whole story about whether this was the first location or not - not sure of the answer but they claim they were and are not affiliated with the Jimmy Buffet chain (which we thought they were before going in). We were in the mood for hamburgers so this hit the spot. Great onion rings. Again right on the water in Lahaina with live music so it is a fun spot to stop in to.

CJ's Deli & Diner - Ok - We stopped in for a quick bite. They have sandwiches, home cooked plates which were good. Their pineapple fried rice was quite tasty and served in a large portion.

Komoda's - On our way back from sunrise on Haleakala we came across this old bakery in the town of Makawao. Their baked goods are fantastic. We bought a box of various things and it was eaten before we even got the car going again. So we went back in to buy more. Worth the stop if you are coming this way.

Birthday Dinner Oahu

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I wound up going to Roy's at the Hawaii Kai location. I have been to a number of the other Roy's locations in NY and Phoenix and always had a great meal. First, the drive there was very nice, passing Diamond Head and then along the water. As tsays mentions they have a great kids menu - 3 courses - in fact my daughter asked for extra carrot sticks to dip in the ranch dressing which she has never done before. The staff were very accomodating including bringing an extra dessert for my wife's birthday gratis. I really enjoy the food - alot of choices including dishesthat allow you to sample 3 different "Roy's Specialties". And of course you can not go wrong with the Chocolate Soufle Cake at the end. Overall, it was a great choice.

Birthday Dinner Oahu

My wife, 2 daughters, age 13 and 10 and I will be traveling to Oahu and Maui later this month. My wife's birthday falls during our stay in Honolulu. I am looking for a nice restaurant that would also accomodate my children. I am thinking about Roy's (not sure which one) or other suggestions.

Also, do you have suggestions for good family restaurants on Maui.
