Calgary Fish and Chips?

Can't seem to dredge anything up from the archives...any recommendations?

Big Band Brunch at Ironwood

Sounds interesting, has anyone had the pleasure/misfortune?

Good (authentic) ethnic restos in Edmonton

A gem joint price-wise and bang for your buck (but not all that ethnic, apart from the Ukrainian breakfast platter) is B's Diner (#6 - 10015 - 82 Ave.) tucked way in the back of an antique mall right near the Fountain Tire on Whyte Ave. Killer breakfasts and lunches, cheap like borscht (they might even serve borscht), cool & quirky clientele, and very pleasant staff and ownership.

Actually, isn't Bow Bulgogi in Calgary? I think this one in Edmonton still goes by Bul-Go-Gi House, and I think they still throw in the Juicy Fruit. Not far from there, about a block east of Bonnie Doon (8110 -82 Ave.) is some real deal, hand-tossed New York style pizza that rivals Tony's. In fact, I think the owners are related to Tony. The place is called Pizza Boys Ragazzi Bistro – everyone I know just calls it Pizza Boys. Pricey, but worth it. And Eddie, the delivery guy, gives it an authentic flavour with his New Yawhk accent (think he's from the Bronx).

Vancouver ethnic food recommendations? [moved from Canada board]

One word: Simba's

Help me feed a celeb in Edmonton + Calgary [moved from Canada Board]

I strongly second the vote for Culina in Edmonton IF Ms PP is looking to keep a low profile. Normand's may work if you want to keep things on the north side of the river.

Barbecue catering

I'm on the hunt for a caterer with mobile barbecue facilities. I've heard of an outfit in Cochrane called BBQ's By Me, but haven't talked with anyone who's had their ribs. Has anyone out there had the pleasure? Are there any other barbecue specialists I should check out?

Taco Del Mar is Coming to N.E. Calgary!!!

...and there goes my left cojone...

Great food near downtown Fairmont Vancouver

If it's truly different you're after, may I humbly suggest Simba's on Denman. Not much of a room, but a fascinating menu (when's the last time you went out for East African?) and more importantly, a proprietor who talks you through that menu...and beyond. Warning: heed the hot sauce lesson.

Calgary Street Eats?

Is that the Burger Inn on Bow Trail? Is there only the one? And from my previous life in Calgary, I seem to remember a nifty burger joint around Northmount Drive...CB's? CJ's? Is it still around?

Calgary Street Eats?

Where might a fella find this bus? Or does it move around?

Calgary Street Eats?

Señor Manzo, next time you're in Vancouver.... http://www.steamrollers.com/

it's not Mexico, but it's a good effort.

Calgary Street Eats?

I'm with you on the burrito front – I'd give my left cojone for a big ol' fish burrito. Actually, I'd settle for a solid fish taco...don't know if I ever found one in Edmonton. I wonder why street tacos have never taken off in this part of the world? I know, I know... it's three month vocation, but if hot dog vendors make a go of it here, why not tacos? (I'm talking the little guys you order three of at a time, then condiment them to oblivion.)

Calgary Street Eats?

Saw a great thread recently on the Toronto board dealing with street eats. Basically any place you can just walk up, place an order and walk away, chowing down.

What are some of the gems in Calgary? Any stars at the farmer's markets? Any honest-to-goodness street vendors doing some open-air grilling? Any burger/chip vans to speak of? Any pupusa nazis? Food court surprises?

And after all these fine recommendations, I've only made a stop at King's on 17th. Crikey, is it me or is that Avenue shaping up to be a prairie version of Robson? Regardless, King's is an interesting little joint, but we'll have to dig deeper and find their forté... our orders of ginger beef, singapore noodles, curried chicken were fine, but unremarkable. Their simple stir-fried vegetables, however, were better than average.

I've yet to convince my better half, or any of my Calgary amigos, to join me at some of the more intriguing mentions from above, but at the risk of confounding anyone following this thread, I have a friend here who has introduced me to another quadrant of Asia well-represented here. Babylon Foods and Tazza are worth the drive in my books. Tazza's take-out selection is exceptionally fine, and Babylon does a killer donair or shwarma for a very reasonable price.

One interesting stumble-upon has been The Holy Grill on 10th Ave. across from Mountain Equipment Co-op. I like the looks of just about everything on their simple menu of pita paninis, burgers and sides of home-cut fries, yams, and beets. If you haven't tried beet fries, they're worth the stained fingers.

Sophie's Pizza filled the tank nicely, one late night.

"Eat out a lot?" you ask, noting we've only been here a week. Well, that's what happens when your fridge dies a couple of hours after taking possession of your new home. All's fixed up now, but the good news is we have a great jump on discovering some fine Calgary eateries.

Kensington Market

You're right...The Best Street Eats thread is an excellent guide. I guess my angle is: what areas offer best bang-for-your-buck re:concentration of vendors? A kensington/chinatown combo sounds promising...

Kensington Market

Visiting Toronto in October for the first time in many, many years. Judging from this thread, am I to assume Kensington Market is the best spot in town to get into some street-type foods?

chinese take-out in cowtown

Outstanding insight and tips, all, and i thank you kindly. Unfortunately I haven't tried anything out yet, as TODAY is moving day. We take possession just after noon, which would suggest to me that tonight is an excellent night for take-out!

All may not be lost on the North China front, Bob. From what David told us it sounded like the plan was to take some well-earned time off, do some traveling, see some family, have a life, etc... Don't be surprised to see the North China sign resurface somewhere on the south side (if it hasn't already!)

We're packing up our Oiler gack and moving south to Calgary later this month. My wife and I are hoping to find a go-to Chinese take-away place along the lines of what North China Restaurant provided us in Edmonton. Not only did North China offer killer szechuan beef, singapore noodles, and potstickers....it was the kind of place where the owner knew your name, knew your favourites, talked about his family, asked about YOUR family. I know it's getting picky to ask for personality with your take-out, but you never know unless you ask. We'll be living near Bow Trail & Sarcee, but one of us will work downtown, so we can cover a bit of territory.
