I'm going to be in and out of NYC for a couple of weeks and am looking for the following
1) A homestyle Italian seafood joint
2) Rec's in midtown for unique food

Best Italian restaurant in Hong Kong: Da Domenico?

He must have been on his med's when you were there. Youngish Italian guy bitched about us taking a 9 pm seating then asking to slow down the dishes so we could enjoy several different types of wine. We must have spent HKD 10,000 and he could not have been more rude. Plenty of other establishments will take that kind of business and thank you for it

Great restaurants *other* than Thai food in Bangkok?

I had dinner at LaDalat two weeks ago and it was fantastic. It had been a year or so since I had eaten there and it has lost none of its quality. One thing that I did notice is that their wine seems a lot more pricey that it used to. Maybe it's just my bad memory .

Best Italian restaurant in Hong Kong: Da Domenico?

Just back from HK , had dinner at Da Domenico. I hate to say this , but I thought it was mediocre at best. The prices were extremely high , service lousy ,and the owner is the biggest jackass I have met in a long time. I did have a grilled sole that I thought was good , but my friends food came out cold and kind of scary looking.

Best Burger in Hong Kong?

I have always struggled to get a good burger in HK , the meat always taste a bit off and the buns are sweet. There is a burger joint next the Delaneys in Wanchai that had a decent burger , but it was 2am and my judgement might have been off !

Bangkok: Non-incendiary recommendations?

I have found that the hotels tend to have toned down versions. I like the the Thai food at Sukhotai , Four Seasons etc... Just got back from BKK and ate at a place on Soi 11(Sukhumvit) that had live music and good cheap eats. Can't remember the name

The Great Sardine Taste-off – best canned sardines – Next 7

When I was living in Asia , we used to buy a brand called Porthos (Portuguese) they came in a spicy sauce and also in a mustard sauce. Have never had any that tasted better

Am going to try to find some of the ones mentioned in this thread. I enjoy sardines with interesting crackers , olives , sharp cheese , and some tasty red wine

Another lousy Vietnamese meal

A few years back we used to eat at Chez Vong and La Colonial . While they might not be considered "authentic" very few Viet places that I eaten outside of Vietnam , Hong Kong , or Socal were authentic.

Thinking of smoking/barbecuing a turkey this time around...

I have had good luck cooking turkey on a Webber kettle. One way to keep the skin from getting too crispy is by putting a little bit of olive oil on the skin about every 30 min.

If you want some great ideas for cooking on the grill or smoker , but the book ......Peace , Love , and BBQ

Cantonese Seafood - Causway Bay

Some years ago , we used to go to a Cantonese seafood place in Causway Bay that had originated in the typhoon shelter then moved to dry land. It was unique because they had "chili pepper rankings" beside the dishes which is unusual for Cantonese cuisine. Can anyone name this place and give me the address? Thanks !

Best Italian restaurant in Hong Kong: Da Domenico?

In the last year I have eaten in a few Italian places in HK. I have found them outrageously priced for what you get. Tuscan and Va Bene in LKF serve up a decent meal but pasta dishes at HKD 186 is nuts. I did have dinner at Ciprianni one evening and found it to be fantastic and would recommend it

Las Vegas Wine Lists?

On a slightly different note , the one thing I love about Vegas is the availibility of great wines in magnums. We were at a whale's comp'd dinner in the Bellagio - Picasso and the wines that kept coming were out of this world !

Best wine you've had under $15

I am right there with you Wineman , PA Chairmans Selction usually has 2 of the 3. We also get a lot of good Aussie wines at the same price. PA can be a handicap because you can't ship from out of state , but they will special order.

Fun Pairings with Seafood!

Any thoughts on a Greek Retsina or Potuguese Vino Verhde ? I know both are cheap , but if the seafood is garlicky / spicy these seem to go well .

Also , In total agreement on Mastroberidino , had a verdicchio and loved it

Chinese food and wine pairing

In all the years that I have spent in either Taiwan or China , have never found wine to go well with Chinese food. I prefer an icy cold Tsingtao beer and save the wine for another time

How do you prefer to buy your wine?

I live in Pa so we have to buy from a state owned store. They have become more sophisticated and are training wine consultants. They have a program called Chairman's Selection which offers great deals on wines. They email me the info then I do my research. Have been able to get some incredible values. When I come across these values , I usually buy a half case. I travel a lot and get to try wines all over the world. When I return home I sometimes try to find those wines or ones that are similar

Australian Reds: Highly Rates from WS

I just picked up a half case of the Two Hands Lilly's Garden Shiraz 2005 WS 94 and it is outstanding. Going to cellar 5 bottles for enjoyment over the next couple of years. Also tastes a JJ Hahn Shiraz Barossa Valley Shiraz 2002 WS 91 and thought it was quite good. Will probably buy a few bottles to enjoy in the near future
