"Healthy" restaurants in Dallas

I agree. York Street would be something different for Dallas and could possibly be appreciated by a Northern Californian. They have a unique and changing menu that is local and fresh (big in Northern California) as well as more of an exotic menu of meat compared to most restaurants in Dallas.

Also, I would recommend Kozy Kitchen. They have great brunch and dinner and is also good. The menu is gluten free, the ingredients are fresh and its clean food for your body. I really like this place. Again it's something unique to Dallas (not the typical big portions and fried foods) and the food is really good.

I also think Teppo is a good choice. The food is great, it's only in Dallas (not a chain) and their specials change everyday.

Whats Your Favorite Salad in DFW

These are some of my favorites...

Houston's: Sashimi Tuna Salad
Fireside Pies: warm TMP & Caesar Salad
Ziziki's: Chicken or Lamb salad

[DFW] Southern and Soul Food Recommendations?

I third Sweet Georgia Brown. Their meatloaf and collard greens are yummy. And I think they have the BEST mac & cheese so far in Dallas (better than the fancy truffle oiled stuff at the upscale restaurants). It is simple, cheesy and has that hard cheese crust on the top. Also, if you're lucky...they have a really good strawberry cake sold by the slice at the end of the counter. I've only had it once...everytime I go back, they are out of it. =(

[DFW] Best Elotes Stand in the Metroplex [DFW]

I haven't tried too many, but my favorite so far is the one in front of the gas station off Harry Hines & Loop 12. They cut it in front of you and have all the toppings and a ton of different hot sauces. I love this place because the elotes are good and the tacos at the gas station are the BEST! There's a man who works there that is a partner in the elote stand...he says they have maybe 7 around the Dallas area. I can't remember where they all are.

I had heard before that they served really good elotes (on the cob) at a bazaar off Harry HInes but haven't tried them yet.

I really don't like the ones at Fuel City...the corn is not fresh at all.

Taco joint in Dallas

No offense, but i don't get what the big deal about this place is. i have given them a couple of chances and i must say that it's really not that great. i love authentic mexican tacos and fuel city doesn't really cut it for me. maybe i'm just really picky about my tacos...i prefer the fajita over pastor and barbacoa. i like it to have some chewy texture instead of being too tender. maybe that's why i've been so picky and can't seem to agree with a lot of people on the best tacos. is anyone with me on this one?

i'm going to try it one more time to be sure...maybe i went on an off day.

side note: also the helote (boiled shucked corn) cart was really bad at the fuel city
station. although i've only tried it once...it was really watery and tasted like
frozen corn. that was disappointing...cuz i love helotes.

Best Korean panchan in Dallas?

The thing with panchan is that they rotate items. Most of the time they serve the same items, but a few dishes change.

I am not a big fan of Woo Me Ok's food or their panchan. It's nice that they give you such a great variety, but their food, especially, is not impressive. I

think so far...I like Seoul Garden and Namoo. I haven't eaten at every Korean restaurant, but from the one's i've tried...they've been more consistent.

The worst for me is when any restaurant gives you kimchee that's been sitting and fermented too long. It's a Korean staple dish and should be decent to really good.

For more of a fast causal Korean eatery...i also like Hanmiri (next center after Komart on Royal Ln.). They have a limited menu and panchan but it's simple, quick and pretty decent for what it is.

WHAT??? do you want to eat in this heat?

My cravings have been similar to everyone's:

big salads
BLTs
ice cream & milk shakes
ceviche
all kinds of fruit (esp. watermelon)

but mostly it has to be the Korean cold noodles...i like the You Chun Restaurant...their cold noodles have slushy ice in it that keeps it COLD and refreshing...and the noodles are nice and chewy...oh and their dumplings are BIG and pretty tasty.

[DFW] Recommendations for Dining Alone

You remind me of me! I have a similar palette and the same friends. When I used to live in San Francisco, it was great b/c a lot of restaurants had a bar as well as a kitchen bar. I would chit chat with people at the kitchen bar as well as the chefs...and on many occasions was offered free small plates of things I haven't tried on the menu. I wish Dallas was more like that. Anyway, I have NO problem eating alone...as a matter of fact my friends think I'm a bit strange b/c I actually enjoy eating alone. It gives me time to relax and really enjoy my food.

So...i would say that most places are fine for dining alone, except I would avoid the more upscale places on weekends and do more local/hole in the wall places instead. During the week, most upscale places should be fine. It seems the weekends are when people come out to eat and sometimes in loud and large groups. That is not very enjoyable for me.

If you like steak...I love eating at the bar at RUTH'S CHRIS. Depending on where you like your steak, most steak houses have a full menu at the bar. I agree that sushi bars are a great place to dine alone. Personally I like to go to OISHII or TEPPO. I think the GRAPE suggestion made earlier is also a good choice. KOZY KITCHEN is good. ZIZIKI'S has a bar also, but they have a lot of small outdoor tables that are nice for dining.

And of course any casual place will feel less awkward...like JIMMY'S. I also like CAFE IZMIR (the deli). Any Asian places are fine. FIRESIDE PIES...but sometimes it's so crowded at the bar.

What it comes down to for me is...dine and enjoy your food. Don't feel awkward anywhere...the restaurants should be happy and lucky to have you as a guest.

Melona Bars (DFW)

Most Korean markets will have it (KoMart - Royal & 35) or Super H Mart (Carrollton). I believe the bakery on the left as soon as you walk in makes their own bars. (This might be what dallasdude is talking about.) I've only had it once, but I think I had the melon bar and it was better than the prepackaged Melona bar. I've tried to get it again, but every time I go, they don't have any left. Enjoy!

10 best things to eat in Dallas

This is a really tough one...i'll just say what comes to mind first:

Fajita Tacos at the gas station off loop 12/Harry Hines
Fried Chicken at Babe's (Carrollton)
Nutella Cake at La Duni
Mac & Cheese and Strawberry Cake at Sweet Georgia Brown
Yakitori and Sushi at Teppo
Porterhouse for 2 at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse
Blackberry Yogurt Drink from Lucky Layla Farms
Pizza and esp. Cheesecake at Fireside Pies
Baklava at Afrah
Most Sandwiches at Jimmy's

There's a few more but i ran out of spaces...
There should be a separate one for desert b/c i didn't get to put any ice cream on my list.
Boo hoo... :(

25th Birthday Dinner (Dallas)

Here are a few places i like:

Hattie's: upscale southern (oak cliff)
Tillman's Roadhouse: american (oak cliff)
Teppo: japanese (greenville)
Kozy Kitchen: american...not too upscale (uptown)
The Grape: new american (greenville)
Charlie Palmer: american...as upsale as abacus (downtown)

These are a few places i like but not in any particular order.

Lunch in Dallas

Here are my suggestions:

1. The Grape (don't believe they're open for lunch on the weekend)
2. The Porch (american fare)
http://www.theporchrestaurant.com
3. Hattie's (upscale southern food)
http://www.hatties.com/index.html
4. Cafe Toulouse (french)
http://www.toulousecafeandbar.com/

These are all non-chain restaurants. They're not too casual or upscale (right in the middle). Have a wonderful lunch! Let us know if you need more suggestions.

Special group luncheon on a Saturday? (Dallas)

Tillman's Roadhouse (Oak Cliff) has a great looking private room (holds up to 24). It looks like chic, fun and electic Texas. There's pics on their website. Haven't been yet but heard great things about it.
http://www.tillmansroadhouse.com/

I love Hattie's (Oak Cliff), but it can get loud in there b/c there's not really a private area.

I also like Kozy Kitchen (Uptown), but there's nothing really special about the ambiance. The food is really good. It's small, so it won't get too loud.

Nick & Sam's Grill (Uptown) is fairly new and going to start opening this Saturday for lunch. I haven't been, but it seems to have gotten pretty good reviews.

Good luck!
Let me know if you need any more suggestions.

Private Room in Dallas area for 30th Birthday Party

Thank you lewisville hounder. I love ethnic places, but was trying to stay away from at least asian b/c a lot of us eat asian food pretty frequently. I should've mentioned that in the post, but i want to try Saigon Block if you recommend it. Sounds great! Thanks again...i really appreciate it.

Private Room in Dallas area for 30th Birthday Party

Thanks emory j & simply victoria! I haven't been to Fearing's but from what I know, you're right...pretty pricey and prolly too upscale. I'll have to try it another day...hopefully soon.

Private Room in Dallas area for 30th Birthday Party

Private Room in Dallas area for 30th Birthday Party

Btw this is my very 1st post. Not sure if it's okay...suggestions & comments will be appreciated!

Private Room in Dallas area for 30th Birthday Party

I am trying to host a 30th birthday dinner for a friend for about 15-20 people and would like a private room. It could be anywhere from Oak Cliff to N. Dallas. I would like the food to be pretty good and be around $35/person not including drinks (some place not too upscale and not too casual). I have come up with only 2 places: The Grape (but seems too romantic althoug food's good) or Tillman's Roadhouse (haven't been but heard good things &private room looks great). I would greatly appreaciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Dallas Seafood

I agree with sike101. The Oceanaire is where i would go if price isn't an issue. They have a oyster bar and a very good variety of fresh fish prepared in many different ways. I've been several times and have yet to be disappointed. I am not sure they have any vegan options though.

www.theoceanaire.com

I've only been to Dallas Fish Market once, but didn't think the food was very good.
Maybe it was just an off night for them, but I have heard good things about them from others.

Wherever you go, i hope you have a wonderful dinner.

Irving Recs?

I'm only familiar with Belt Line between 183 and 114.
Here are my recs:

Hanasho Japanese Restaurant (Belt Line and Rochelle): sushi's ok but the dishes are good
Argentina Bakery (Belt Line and 183): empanadas with beef/egg/jalapeno are really good...for a snack only
Bangkok Orchid Thai (Belt Line and 183): good thai food

There are a lot of chain restaurants tho.
Good Luck!

[DFW] Best Breakfast Burritos/Tacos in D/FW [DFW]

There's a place in Dallas inside the Shop N Go convenient store (East side of 75 on Fitzhugh next to Thai Noodle and Rice) that has a good breakfast burrito.

I get the chorizo breakfast burrito and add potatoes in it (maybe $2-3).
It's pretty spicy and really good, but very greasy (red chorizo grease dripping down).

I've taken a couple people there who really liked it and didn't mind the heartburn that came with it. Lucky for me, I have yet to experience heartburn and still love the burrito.

Their barbacoa tacos aren't bad either.

Dallas Desserts

Haven't had too many desserts in the area, but here are my favorites so far:

Cheesecake: Fireside Pies
Chocolate Cake: Palm
Carrot Cake: Trululcks
Pizookie (fresh baked wht choc macademia nut cookie w/vanilla ice cream on top):
BJ's Brewery
Nutella Cake: La Duni

Can't wait to try Tillman's and Doughmonkeys!

Korean in Dallas

I think Seoul Garden (35 & Royal Ln) is pretty consistent and one of the
better Korean restaurants.
They have a good variety of Korean dishes.
The more common and well-liked dishes are:

galbi (marinated short rib)
bulgogi (marinated thin sliced beef)
bibimbop (rice, mixed vegetables and beef w/spicy sauce)
soondubu jigae (spicy tofu soup)
kimchi jigae (spicy kimchi soup)

FYI: No matter what you order, you are also served small side dishes (5-10).
They change sometimes from day to day, but kimchi (fermented spicy cabbage)
is the staple of Korea food, so it will always be served w/any meal.

There's a big Korean supermarket in Carollton called H Mart.
They have a small food court inside.
It's fast and cheap ($5-$8 average) and a good way to get introduced to Korean food.
They usually don't give the side dishes tho.
