Dupont circle with 8 y.o.
I'm not sure what combination at Shophouse wouldn't be spicy.
You might consider the Kabob House for lunch instead of dinner. It's more casual than the other places you listed for dinner and doesn't have much atmosphere.
Dupont circle with 8 y.o.
Fyi Shophouse is mouth burning spicy - not sure how your son handles spice. For example, the steak is coated with spices so it is spicy even without adding sauce.
The cupcake place is Hello Cupcake on Connecticut Ave just below Dupont circle.
Chocolate Class?
maybe took a class from Jason Andelman?

Store Brands that are Just as Good as their Brand Name Cousins
I use Costco Kirkland unsalted butter for baking. It's much cheaper than Land O Lakes, and I haven't noticed a difference.

mission to marzipan
A few weeks back, I found it at the Safeway in Bailey's Crossroads. I first tried the Safeway on Lee Hwy near the Italian store, and there was a shelf tag for it, but they were out.
New Ray's the Steaks open for business
A couple of years ago, Tom Sietsema reported that Michael Landrum also plans to open a bakery next door to the new Rays location so hopefully this means that this is still the plan. (While it sounds like the plan for the former Rays location has since changed from what's in the article.)

The place in Courthouse used to be both -- it was Atilla's and then became Courthouse Bistro (Italian) last year for a short time.
Buying a good brand of Mead in Arlington
I saw a bottle of mead at Best Cellars in Clarendon a while ago, so if you go to Whole Foods in Clarendon, you could check it out too. I don't think it was Chaucer's brand, but I can't remember the brand.
Buttercream Help: How Do You Make It?
In addition to the butter being possibly too warm as mentioned, you might not have needed as much of the liquid that the recipe calls for. I don't use as much powdered sugar as the Magnolia recipe calls for and I also don't add all the milk called for in the recipe, but intead I add milk a little bit at a time while the mixer is running (and let it run a bit before adding more because the frosting gets looser once the powdered sugar mixes into the butter) until I get the consistency I'm looking for.
Know of any places in the DC area serving Baked Alaska?
Oceanaire in DC (you should call and confirm they still have it.)

And Minh's in Clarendon calls them rice rolls

Vegetarian pot pie...?
I've made vegetarian chicken pot pie by substituting Morningside Farms vegetarian chicken strips for the chicken. I just winged it, but what I did is I precooked the filling so that I wouldn't have to worry about making sure the vegetables cooked through in the oven. I cook diced potatoes, carrots, peas, and onions in a saucepan with vegetable broth. The Morningside Farms strips are pretty much cooked so I chop them up and add them towards the end. Then I let the filling cool, and I put it in a pie crust and bake it in the oven.

College Dorm Cooking Facilities
I went to college in the early 90's. The freshman dorm had no cooking facilities. Am I the only one who was making ramen in a hot pot in my dorm room? :) I had communal kitchens in my dorms sophomore and senior years. One of those years, I also got the sandwich maker (like an early version of a panini maker but has triangular pockets) so I'd bring back a bread and cheese sandwich from the dining hall to make a grilled cheese snack later.
