birthday steak house recommendations needed

my sister suggests Standford's in Hillsboro for her birthday dinner.
i would like to find somewhere a bit more upscale. the Hillsboror Standords location is a very convenient location but are there any other suggestions close by?
thank you !

When the waiter wants to clear the dishes before everyone is done

yes, this is such a difficult situation especially at a table with more than two.
first, everyone should eat at a more leisurely pace and not wolf down the food. it would be so nice if everyone would finish at about the same time. it's kind of like driving along with the traffic flow.

second, the dishes should not be cleared until everyone is finished.
the end.

dried natto

thanks chemical.
i think we've decided that my friend should order from davis-sq's link. i think i might even order some myself.
re: dry natto, i suddenly remembered instant natto miso. it had dried natto in it and it rehydrated nicely in the instant miso soup, but it was nothing close to the fresh/wet natto that i would eat with rice. the dried natto were chopped into very small bits.

dried natto

my friend would like to try natto. she does not have an asian market close by. there are dried natto beans on amazon. can these be rehydrated to be like the thawed frozen natto from the asian markets?
does anyone here have any recommendations on how to get "fresh" natto to my friend?
if i were to send frozen natto via overnight air, do you think the natto would keep safely?

What type of cuisine do you NOT like?

thank you steve. it's been a while i know. hope it's not too late to continue.
1. ask about how the food comes out? how should the food come out of a tandoor oven?
2. i liked your suggestion to ask about where the chef is from and specialties from that region.

Marilyn Hagerty reviews McDonald's

i loved-still love her story. she writes an innocent review for the olive garden, it hits the internet for some reason, internet snarkers beat her down. then the tide turns and anthony bourdain (also snarked at her in the beginning) sponsors her to new york, etc. his publishing company has published her reviews into a book.

Leave Guy Fieri alone: Why he has nothing to do with the Food Network’s decline

i really liked good eats and the motorcyle touring show. i liked the nerdy self-deprecating alton brown.
i started to not care for alton brown's new "character" on ICA, and now, i really don't like the character in cutthroat kitchen.

Signs that someone is a GOOD cook

i was kind responding to law-doc who said good cooks don't talk about their cooking. seems to me many and most folks here are very good cooks, and everyone etalks about their cooking and what they do.

i think everyone here talks alot about food and his/her cooking.

i'm not sure talking about food could be considered as bravado.

Ramen

miyabi 45th now has a "popup" named onibaba ramen every wednesday for lunch. ramen. and only 1 type of ramen. it's pretty good ramen. i;ve only had the shoyu and shiyo ramens but the broth is clean and uncomplicated. if you are tired of the heavy, heavy american style broths i think you will appreciate onibaba ramen. you won't have to pay extra for every single topping. the ramen comes with all the toppings. once i ordered an extra egg having forgotten the ramen comes with the egg, and i ended up with a whole egg as well as the standard 1/2 egg. the bowls are not so huge that you are uncomfortably full. the bowls are larger than samurai ramen but smaller than yoroshiku. you're looking at about $9 a bowl before tax.

there is no shame in liking spam.....not everyone mocks or hates spam. people from hawaii, south korea and japan are a few that come to mind who like spam and cook with it. :-)

What type of cuisine do you NOT like?

thank you so much for your advice. as i said to phild above, i will have to figure out a way to peek into the kitchens!
btw, why do i never see whole grilled or baked fish at indian restaurants?

What type of cuisine do you NOT like?

thank you. around here it's mostly buffets and even the regular menu is all the stewed stuff and dried out tandooris. meat sauces over rice or sopped up with naan are fairly boring to me. you offered some interesting insights for me. i will start peeking into the kitchens!

What type of cuisine do you NOT like?

indian. i don't hate it. maybe i have not had really good examples of indian cooking. i love the rices and biriyanis and saag paneer, samosas and naan. but....most other dishes seem so similar to taste and texture and cooking style: mostly stewed in sauces. the meats are blended and melded into the sauces. and for me, the sauces all kind of taste similar. i've had the tandoori meats but they all seem to be overcooked and dry. i like the curries, but almost everything else seem to be cooked like a curry with different spices.

New PBS series: The Mind of a Chef

what's wrong with our pbs station, paul? they always show the shows at least 1 season late. but they spend hours showing kcts cooks. i remember going round and round with them on the kimchi chronicles. it took them a year later to finally show it.
