Sorabol is closed. It is now Arirang. I have heard it is so-so from true Korean foodies.
Why Yelp Sucks!
i enjoy reading chowhound because everyone here is so experienced and so sure of themselves.
i have posted some brief comments and questions on new restaurants around my neighborhood, and most times no one ever replies.
if i go to yelp, someone has tried the new restaurant, posted their opinion and even posted some pictures. i find that very helpful
i rarely see any new discussion on CH on brand new restaurants, unless they are by already well-known local super-chef-restauranteurs.
yelp scoops CH on new restaurants, usually by months.
Hungweilo - not seattle related, but didn't know where to post
in a discussion on Bamboo Gardens, i posted a chinese restaurant sign i saw in portland.
check out this link.
another far-related relative? :-))

this nabe pot is safe to use on open fire or glass cooktop.
if you have not used it for a while, soak in water for a few hours, make sure it's nice and dry, then bring to temp using medium low heat.
if you scroll up, you can see the pictures of the a dish that a poster shared with us.
looks very delicious. btw!
ISO couscous in lynnwood
arrggh.
i went to central market on friday to buy some more couscous, and the whole durum wheat bin was EMPTY!!!
i asked and the clerk told me they sold out the last few days.
arrrrgggh.
ISO couscous in lynnwood
paul!
i went to central market in shoreline.
i was directed to the bulk food bins. there were maybe 4 bins of couscous. 3 of them had the quick cook instructions for 5 or 10 minutes in hot water,
one of the bins did not.
based on what i found online on traditional couscous, i think i found the right now.
i made it, and it turned out very well.
i got: whole wheat couscous: unenriched whole durum wheat semolina.
btw, i had not been to central markets in ummmm...at least 3 years. it's now my new favorite store. :-))
ISO couscous in lynnwood
not the instant kind.
need to find couscous that i can steam in a couscous pot.
i live in lynnwood. will try the african market on hwy 99 by YehYeh's and also JDs. tried ranch market a few days ago, but did not see any.
Received a beautiful SS couscousierre. Now what?
caroline, first things first. the couscousier is a gift. when i said "received" i meant as a gift. my friends and i were in an email discussion on couscous. one of my friends is a very generous soul and she ordered a couscous pot for all 3 of us. i've had the quick cooking couscous. i need to find the kind that can steam in the couscous pot. thanks for your recommendations.
Received a beautiful SS couscousierre. Now what?

Hi all,
Need some advice on what to do with this.
Stew on the bottom part, and couscous on the top? yes?
I am not an novice cook, but have never made couscous.
Thanks!
in search of Mochi
all, THANK YOU!
i found some at the old Paldo World which is now KS-Mart on Hey 99, in Lynnwood.
i'll check out Central Market in mill creek next time i'm in the neighborhood.
and yes, it is the new year's mochi. i suddenly developed a hankering for fire-roasted puffy mochi cakes, wrapped in nori.
yum.
in search of Mochi
hi everyone,
other than uwajimaya, where can i find Mochi? frozen is fine. i looked in Ranch 99 in Shoreline/Lynnwood, but no luck. i am in the Lynnwood area.
do you think H-Mart would have?
Above average dining in the general area of Shoreline - Lynnwood?
I think San Fernando is still open.

I second Gourmet on Chanterelle and Cafe de Paris. Last 2 times, I went to Chanterelle, about 1` year ago, about 1 year apart, first, the chicken breast was dry. The next time, the salmon filet was dry.
I wen to Cafe de Paris and ordered escargots. 6 escargot appeared on a plate naked, rolling around in some butter. A large group of local senior citizens were there and seemed to be enjoying what I think was the nightly special, but I have not idea what it was.
I really do miss Olives.

Paldo World has reopened as... I think...KT Mart (?). The building has always remained open and the restaurants and the various other shops remained open. I was there, maybe a month ago, and i think Chicky Pub was closed. I did not notice if the chicken was still on the Tofu House menu.
I will be laughed off this board!
actually, sounds pretty good. i will check out my QFC in the seatte area and see if they make this sandwich.
:-))
In search of Lao sausage
drat! now i have to figure out what i want at H mart to get that free K Chronicles calendar.
heh.
i work in bellevue. maybe bellevue uwajimaya will carry it.
asians associates at work are very interested in this sausage. we have a very diverse asian population, but no one from Laos. vietnamese associates are curious. she is going to check out some markets in renton. i think my best bet is going to be bellevue/east side.
i love having a mission.
In search of Lao sausage
i had the sausage at Safrron Deli in Issaquah, at a meetup lunch.
seattle deli next to boohan has one of my favorite special banh mi sandwiches, and lots of sausages, pates, etc. etc. but i never noticed anything like a Lao sausage.
kimchi chronicles - new PBS series
PERFECT!!!
free K Chronicles calendar and Lao sausage.
:-))
In search of Lao sausage
dagoose, thanks. i'm learning that lao does not go this far north.
i need to brush up on the SE Asia map...cambodia, laos, vietnam...and thailand?
lots of vietnamese and thai restaurants here, but i am sure neither of them are similar at all with lao cuisine.
In search of Lao sausage
thank you paul.
i will head to HMart next day off. i wonder if boohan market would carry it? i haven't looked there yet.
as usual, you are a wealth of info for our neck of the woods.
In search of Lao sausage
good idea, but it looks like i am going to have to head south to seattle to find a lao restaurant.
i was really hoping to avoid the drive to seattle and further south.
i wonder if lao sausage is different from thai sausage? those thai have a sausage?
please excuse my ignorance.
Best yoshoku ?
i totally understand your confusion! the first time i searched for cafe soleil, i hit on the ethiopian restaurant.
try this link for the cafe soleil in mukilteo

omurice is my childhood happy place memory.
does anyone here serve kare with a sunnyside up fried egg? that was how we had kare in yokohama, a hundred years ago.
Is Canlis or Herbfarm dated?
i've never been to Canlis, but i've been to the Herb farm 3 times now within the past 3 years. i don't think the food at the Herbfarm is dated. as described in another post, Herbfarm's Country Roccoco decor is just fine with me. is it dated? i think i prefer it to the currently popular industrial-chic decor that is deafening and cold and comfortable.
the first visit was on a whim with a friend and we were wowed. 2nd visit, i still remember the cured egg served with one of the courses. yes, the 30 minute meet and lecture was awfully tedious, but so is the 10 minute lesson at Andaluca between every course; and by the 3rd dinner, we knew to arrive late to miss the Herbfarm history lesson.
i like the Herbfarm for the incredible service and every course is a pleasant surprise for me.
on our second visit, they kept skipping our table for the 2nd pour, until we grumbled a tad bit more loudly than sotto voce, and suddenly everything was fine. i;ve been at Herbfarm dinners with guests dressed in hoodies and shorts to a couple dressed in ballroom gown and tails. it is a destination dinner. i wowed my sister for her birthday. but i would go once a month for each theme dinner if i could.
In search of Lao sausage
i had Lao Sausage for the very first time, and i loved it.
where can i get some? i live in lynnwood and tried ranch 99 with no luck.
will i have to head into seattle to find an ethnic market that sells Lao Sausage?
thanks!
kimchi chronicles - new PBS series
inspite of my initial reaction to the first show, i ended up enjoying the series. i bought the DVD as christmas presents. seemed like a good way to introduce unadventuresome folks to korean food.
Best yoshoku ?
i finally made it to Cafe Soleil, and was very pleased with my dinner.
i've heard of Fort St. George for yoshoku.
how do they compare? are there other recommendations for yoshoku in and near seattle?

Do you really like that green bean casserole?
never had green bean casserole at home growing up in the 60s and 70s, but then, we grew up overseas. the first time i had the casserole many-several years ago, i liked it. but i like green beans in any shape or for. i tried alton brown's recipe, it was fussy and it was just "ok" for me.
i make my mushroom sauce from scratch now, with garlic flavor.
