Anyone been to Lina Frey recently?
Have never been there for dinner but have a Blackboard Eats coupon. There are quite a few recent negative reviews on both Open Table and Yelp both regarding service and food. I think people tend to chime in more about bad experiences than good ones on both those sites --- so before I take the plunge and have dinner at Lina Frey, have any hounds been there lately and should I bother?
Recommendations for a Beerhound in Manhattan?
La Cerveceria is an inexpensive Peruvian restaurant with a large and very interesting beer list. Coopers Cafe also is quite good. Both in the East Village.

Need some recs for xmas gift certificate: dinner for two in Maplewood area or nearby
I would like to give my hairdresser and his partner a gift certificate for dinner as a xmas gift. They live in Maplewood. I have done this before, gave them dinner at Lorena's and that was a hit, but I am not familiar with the area and could use some help. I am figuring on $150 to $200 as a gift. There is a restaurant in Montclair, Culinearia (forgive my spelling if that is wrong) that looked sort of interesting, what do you think. I would prefer either Italian or modern American cuisine, but open to almost anything except sushi.

NYC hounds first trip to Lake Tahoe/Truckee
We have rented a house in Truckee for a week in August and are totally unfamiliar with the area. I've picked up a few Tahoe threads, thought we would definitely check out Moody's and maybe Dragonfly for dinner. Could use a few more recommendations, how is Big Water Grille? Wild Goose? Generally we like local, simple fare, prefer American food on this trip (with sushi exception I mentioned). If we cook, which is likely for a few meals, any recs for a good liquor/wine store with a good California selection? How about groceries, and also fresh produce/meat/seafood? Is there a local farmers market and if so, where and when?
Commerce Restaurant's new all cash policy
No doubt my error, but our server did make it sound as if it was recently put in place. In any event, we thought it was interesting. I would imagine it was put in place to address employee theft issues, but balance that against the transaction fees charged by credit card companies. I guess so few people actually pay cash when a bill for two people is over $75 or $80 that the balance tips in favor of credit cards only.
Commerce Restaurant's new all cash policy
Had our usual excellent dinner here on Tuesday but we were surprised to learn that Commerce is now a NO CASH restaurant --- that's right, just like a plane! Holds true for both the bar and table service, there isn't even a register behind the bar anymore. Thought it was a bit weird but we were OK with it, although we do pay cash for dinner from time to time. Has anyone seen this before? A harbinger of things to come?

Visiting Sout Hampton and East Hampton for the first time later this summer. Need reco's
Babette's in Easthampton is good for breakfast, nice to sit outside if you can, it is right in town. I second Bobby Van's, the food is terrific and generally the service is, too. Nick and Toni's in Easthampton also wonderful for dinner if you can get a reservation. I was at Spring Close last Friday, it is good but not fabulous, the menu is much more limited and casual than the Laundry, it is more like Meeting House in Amagansett. I also like Fresno for dinner in Easthampton. All these places get very crowded on weekends, reserve way in advance. Nicj and Toni's takes reservations 10 days prior.

No, it was the standard boilerplate one that says reservation confirmed and says if your plans change, let us know. I am pretty sure they called me on my cell a couple of days in advance to confirm (99% of my open table bookings do). I just think they overbooked and did not know how to handle it. And I use Open Table all over the country and have never had a problem with them.

actually, this was at the new location in town, where One Ocean used to be. The Chowhound Team requested that I clarify my post, which I am doing here. Reservation was made on Monday May 16 on Open Table for Saturday evening reservation May 21st. We were clearly in the restaurant 's reservation book. I think waiting over 30 minutes past appointed reservation time is pretty bad, exacerbated by the failure of the hostess to apologize, give us any idea of when and if we might actually be seated, offer drinks. As the summer season begins, hopefully Almond will get their act together.

Did not honor reservation made on open table ten days ago. Waited 45 minutes and left, went to town line bbq instead. No apology, no free drinks, nothing. Have had a weekend place here for years and will never go back. Will drive past in November when they are dying and laugh. Try this, when we left, they had the nerve to cancel our open table booking so we could not slam them there!
They have the cheesy zebra wallpaper from the old Gino's on lx and 61st. Nice touch, if you are over 70. Did not taste anything but looked mediocre.

In Vino is small and gets noisy but has wonderful food ---- East Village.

Recommending a fun cooking class in San Miguel Allende
I just returned from a week's stay in SMA and want to recommend a cooking class that I took with a friend on the recommndation of our hotel concierge. The chef is Gaby Green, who used to own a couple of restaurants in town. It is totally hands on, she picks you up and you go to market, then back to her home, where you cook and eat. Was $100 US per person including the food, and she gives you the recipes for everything you made (and you can basically pick and choose, depending on your taste and what is in season). Highly recommend, go to website www.lafondarosa.com
BTW, she is totally fluent in English should that be a concern. And she makes a killer margarita.
First time in SMA next week , please review choices and where to eat dinner on Easter Sunday?
Two NYC women hounds hitting SMA next week. Cobbled together a lot of info from this Board and also Trip Advisor website, so I think we have what we need re breakfast, lunch, trucks --- but we would like some feedback on dinner choices, which are: The Restaurant, Cafe Rama, La Posadita, Mia Vida, and Jackie's. We both love a good steak and considered Tio Lucas, but it got pretty mixed reviews elsewhere and a comment that two women alone would not be treated well there. Samr for Longhorn Steakhouse. Any ideas about what is open on Easter Sunday for dinner? For Italian, would we be better off at Andrea? What about substituting Nirvana for anything on our list?

Bet that got your attention if you are looking for a challenge. Looking for private room for around 20 people max, walking distance to Astor Place if possible, kind of a semi-wake/shiva. Ideas? For next Saturday 3/26?
Italian in the village on 3/25 for four
I am stuck with the task of making the reservation, and of course, my favorites are booked --- L'artusi and Centro Vinoteca. I have a reservation at In Vino, that is a local standby for us, but would love some new ideas. Need something comfortable and not too noisy where we can linger, even on a Friday with a 7:30 or 8 pm table. I like Malatesta but that is not for this group. Not quite the same area but I am thinking maybe Peasant instead, they were not booked up yet. Ideas? But must take reservations, I won't do dinner on a Friday without, what can I say?
By the way, I have been traveling a lot and not out and about in NYC, but did Sora Lella in Tribeca close? If so, that's a shame. Nice place, great food. Put Giorgione to shame, IMO.

I live around the corner and the food is quite good. It's comfortable, you can hear yourself speak. If you are in your twenties (I was, once upon a time) and looking for something hip, not a good Sat night choice for you. Have you been to In Vino Kitchen? Not mind blowing, but quite good.

I may be edging up to top of your budget, but Punch has a varied menu and that could work. Look at Craftbar brunch as well. And there is nothing wrong with the food at L'express, they have a nice brunch menu but 9 people may be too difficult there.

Four of us had a great meal last night at Hundred Acres, sweetened with a Blackboard Eats 30% coupon. I use this all the time, anyone who lives here is foolish not to take advantage. Also have been loving Mermaid Oyster Bar but I am not a fan of their other places.

Need help! If you have made a pork shoulder roast/pernil, please respond!
I have a NY Times recipe for pernil that I was planning on trying Sunday after xmas. Have an almost parallel recipe from Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything. This is a cut of meat that I am not familiar with, but I went to a great pork store in NYC (where we live) and I wound up with pork shoulder, but there is no bone-in and no skin, this was likely a huge error on my part. Can I basically follow a classic pernil recipe for this cut of meat and wind up with something edible but without the crispiness that the skin would have provided? In other words, can I score this cut of meat and throw a paste on it, let it marinate for a while and get something edible? Am in a bit of a panic, do not want to substitute spaghetti and meatballs and I need some hound help!

Both Cacio et Vino and Cacio et Pepe will work for you, but you are better off on the earlier side, like 7 ish. Same for Back Forty. Decent food and nice people at Jules on St Marks, but again, with small kids, go early.
