hawaiian luau/bbq style catering
Greetings hounds, any thoughts or leads on a restaurant or private caterer to do a party for 30-40 people? We don't need the show, just some "ono grinds." Many thanks for any thoughts on the subject.
Love those Blue Crab Hand Rolls! Whose are the best?
Kiriko makes this mayo-phobe happy by making it all crab inside no problem.

ps J.L. -- nice work!

Haven't been to Urasawa, tho been to lots of great sushi spots in tokyo and other parts of japan...i imagine Urasawa as strictly sushi and sashimi....it isn't just sushi and sashi at matsuhisa depending on what you have...there are nice cooked fish and shellfish dishes too....im guessing it was about 150/pp there plus drinks for what we had....even if not for your anniversary, why don't you give that private area a shot sometime while dining in LA .... ill do the same on Urasawa -- win win.

There is a private japanese/modern looking omakase room window on la cienega at Matsuhisa, essentially a high class bar for 6 or so with a few iron chefs working up dishes. We went for my dad's 60th about 5 years ago and it was dynamite. Loads of fresh mostly raw seafood in various sashimi, sushi and other sorts of arrangements. They did my dad's meal special to all of his favorites but then kicked it up a notch as they say. I still frequent Matsuhisa, have other favorites on regular menu, but can say tho that this omakase room is private (even if yo went just you two and there was someone else there in room) very cool and might be worthy of consideration.
Spice Table Lunch
i enjoy the fried catfish sandwich, corn meal covered and fried crisp and served on fantastic light on inside and crisp on outside bread -- the double crispness of the fish and the bread and the lightness of the bread really make this...it had hot sauce pickles etc on it. fries and curry sauce on side were nice also. This was approaching 20 dollars with a guava drink, but it was good.
Nailsworth
Thanks for all the tips!
We loved the cozy pubs including the George Inn up a hill overlooking town with perfect filet mignon on toast sandwich, the weighbridge inn with the 'famous 2 in 1 pies' which are half your choice (ie pork and stilton, steak and mushroom, and 4 more options) and half cauli and cheese, and the Britannia ("Brit") in center of town which does wood fired pizzas and other standard pub fare. The ales around here were phenomenal....so much variety and with the "light" food and hills in the area, no prob sleeping.
Also the passage to india had very creative and spicy curries that had little bits of eggplant (aubergine?) to sop up the tasty sauce.
a quick plate of oysters and beer at williams was also refreshing and delish
lastly, im a sucker for a nice kebab and there's a new shop at the crossroads in middle of town...they make their own hot sauce and it was atomic.
for a small town, nailsworth has a ton of great food and we only scratched the surface.
Best Dover Sole
I agree with the john dory too. they do a good job cooking and saucing the fish. it is delish.
Top 10 Chili Dogs in LA
Had the pleasure of the chili cheese dog at Kalbi Burger, a large vienna beef frank, with melted nacho type cheese and a brown all-meat chili (looked like broken down korean bbq). This was pretty tasty.

really appreciate all the tips and will report back when i return mid-april
some pints, oysters, pies ... all that sounds fantastic.....
Nailsworth
That's really appreciated. Will be there visiting friends for almost a week and we'll be hanging out, and branching out with some day trips to Bath, other family in Chipping Norton and some of the cool stone circles in the area. My wife is well along pregnant so I'm certain we'll be doing our share of nesting with friends in Nailsworth, thus the import of your terrific tips! One other thing, what pubs are good for a boys night out, nothing fancy foodwise but perhaps someplace has really fine ales (??) or special types of brews that we can't here in California where I'm from? I'm particularly looking forward to those on the food/drink docket.

Any leads on good pubs or food including inexpensive fish and chips, kebabs and the like in this town near Stroud? Thank you!
Furaibo...
great value on katsu, katsu curry, fried chicken, yakitori bowl...dishes in 6-8 dollar range usually including soup and salad and rice. if really hungry the katsu plates in chicken or pork are massive.
Top 10 Chili Dogs in LA
thanks for the info hounds-- no time to waste on bad dogs, ie papayas.
martys is on pico by rancho park and uses vienna beef dogs...large ones, and very satisfying. the "combo" is a split dog on top of a burger for the light lunch.
Another place that has vienna beef dogs on pico (near doheny) served on a fresh onion roll bun is label's table deli ...large and steamed....chili there is dodgy (way too meaty, gasp) but the other deli sandwiches are tasty.
i love that our city is a hotdog town!
Top 10 Chili Dogs in LA
I don't know about ten, but my favorites not on the list:
Carneys (Sunset)
Coney Dogs (Sunset)
Marty's (Pico)
Oki Dogs (Fairfax, Pico)
I've also heard Skooby's is good and same with Papaya King on Hollywood.
Right now, I'm trending toward Coney Island -- steamed bun, zesty chili, good dogs, good size (ie two) but can't miss with Carney's either.
Post Screening Drinks -- Raleigh Studios
I've heard good things about this new beer garden place on la brea called wirsthaus with schnitzels and good selection of brew...

What is good for high tea/shower event in BH/WeHo area?
Curious also if you have to rent out a room or can just make a reservation.
Likely afternoon, 25 people or so.
Many thanks.
Walked Out of Pacific Dining Car & Went to Taylor's
Many reasons why some prefer Taylors to PDC and vice-versa but if you didn't try the steaks, how can you say the steaks aren't much better at PDC? One is dry-aged, USDA prime, the other, well, isn't. Hey the former may be expensive or a rip-off but you get a superior steak. In any event, glad you enjoyed Taylors and fancy restaurants aren't for everyone all the time and not always worth the cash.
Any LA-area Swedish Restaurants?
Not a restaurant per se, but loads of good cheese, sausage, deli meats, meatballs, candy, bread etc at Olsons Scandavian Deli on Pico east of Fairfax....this is where we get our fix.

Favorites at JAR as of late?
Burger (they'll serve it at table too if you ask); fries and lobster bearnaise sauce; hot fudge and caramel sundae. Add a cocktail and you may have a hard time getting up - have fun
11-11-11 and 50!
For 11-11-11, you can go to H Salt in West LA like Nigel Tufnel and David St. Hubbins.
Pann's
One of the most overrated places in town that seems to get puffed up by a circle of the same few posters agreeing with one another.
vaunted patty melt = soggy on bottom and unwieldy (even Norms much better)
wings = plain, nothing special (Rosco's and many others much tastier)
"best" corned beef hash = not on menu and the stuff of myth of only select insiders
soups/veg = non-remarkable geriatric cafeteria fare
"best" bisquits = sawdust dry
Oh, where in L.A............
yes, 3d and fairfax....i haven't had them but i think they may also have chocolate beignets, maybe others from time to time. they have gumbo and jambalaya....i usually stick to the fried catfish or oyster poboy, not bad, or the crawfish pie/strudel thing...i wouldn't be afraid to eat some beignets there!
Does anyone also agree with me that Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles is just not that great?
Panns = overrated.
jan's = fluffy and crisp belgian waffle and better chicken
jans on beverly east of la cienega
Coney Dog
I agree. Nice steamed bun really held together. Dog beefy but not enormous either so room for the chili, sport peppers etc....ill be back. Tastosterone.
New Favoite Corned Beef Hash & Eggs @...
Went to Pann's. No corned beef hash on menu. No special. Maybe the poster lucked out. We didn't.
