the Eternal Tripitas Taco Crawl

I've had great tripitas at Taqueria San Jose (Mission @ 24th), but they've been inconsistent. And when they don't have the nice crispy texture, they are not so hot.

I second the Tonayense though, they are the most consistent Tacos de Tripitas that I've found in SF.

Good tacos tripas in SF

Wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for tacos tripas in SF. I've had some great ones through the Mission, but places tend to be inconsistent. I've liked the Tonayense trucks the most, but they've been inconsistent as well for me. Sometimes it's nice and crispy but still tender on the inside... but other times has been much more mushy consistency.

Tripas done well, cooked tender and lightly fried to crisp them up, are outstanding... but bad ones can be a bland mushy mess.

Anyway, any recommendations would be appreciated.

Portugal report

I just wanted to pass along a couple restaurants I enjoyed on a recent trip through Portugal. While we had good food on the whole trip, fresh seafood and dependable roasted chicken (the most flavorful chicken I've ever had) we're available almost everywhere... there weren't many places we came across that I'd send people out of their way to find.

The 2 places that I would send people in search of would be Ali a Papa, a moroccan restaurant in the Bairro Alto neighborhood in Lisboa (Rua da Atalaia 95), and to Nectar Enoteca, a wine bar / restaurant in Lagos (Algarve, south coast) at Rua Silva Lopes 19.

Both places delivered a meal with a complexity and depth of flavor that was lacking in our other meals in Portugal. The lamb couscous and the chicken tajine at Ali a Papa were both excellent. Nectar is a trendy looking wine bar that has an excellent selection of Portuguese wines as well as a full menu. We had a wonderful sheep's cheese from Azeitao, a fava bean and sausage dish that was excellent and a chicken curry that was far superior to the couple of indian places we tried there.

Of course one of the simpler food highlights was the endless tasty olives, lupini beans and white port & tonic cocktails enjoyed al fresca most afternoons.

Huevos Rancheros

I second Pastores in the mission (Mission @ Cortland). Haven't tried Morelia, but Pastores has the best Huevos Rancheros I've ever had and they serve any time (not just a breakfast option). Great mole and chilaquiles as well.

Authentic Bun Cha in bay area?

I've always been a big fan of Bun Cha Giao Thit (grilled pork with rice vermicelli and fried rolls), but after recently travelling to Vietnam I've discovered it's served a bit differently (big suprise) there.

The char grilled pork is served in a warm tangy broth rather than on top of the noodles with a fish sauce on the side. Noodles and a garden of leafy veggies and sprouts are served on the side to add to the meat and broth. I found the VN version to be much tastier and more complexly flavored.

some pics of what I'm talking about on the wonderful noodlepie blog...

I'm wondering if anyone familiar with the authentic preperation knows if it is available in the bay area?
