Caplansky's - You have got to be kidding me!

We went to Caplansky's last night. We too have had Katz's/Stage/Carnegie/Schwartz's/Pancer's etc. Of the 4 of us, the liver & onions was WAY over-done; the smoked meat was cut very thin & quite dry (though the smoke/spice flavour was very good); the 2 different versions of breakfast were ok, but not particularly notable. the soup was delicious, and the fries were really good. I had some beef bacon that had a difficult time convincing me it was not beef jerky. Not a fan, though that could just be me. The servers were friendly enough, but terribly inattentive, and could have cared less when one of our number send back the awful liver & onions.

The service was really not very good - we waited ages for our food, and at one point, when needing sour cream, 3 of had our hands waving in the air & were totally overlooked. The place wasn't even 1/2 full, so it's not like they were slammed or anything.

It's obvious from reading the posts that there are some serious issues with consistency at Caplansky's. i think everyone desperately wants zane to succeed, but he's going to have to focus on correcting that issue before he does it here. If i were to compare, the food at the Monarch was better (though much smokier).

For now, our deli dollars will be spent at Centre Street Deli - the best we've had outside of Katz's.

Count Chocula and Boo Berry in Toronto

I'm not surprised Count Chocula is still around (if you dig for it), as it was the last of the 3 to be ousted from Canadian shelves.

As a bona-fide addict of Boo Berry, exhaustive searches have turned up nothing for Canada. I buy mine in Buffalo; shipping can be a bit pricey due to Canadian Customs regulations (so I'm told), and can take a while. Even in the States, though, they aren't offered in most grocery stores (in the southern states I think they still have them at Target, etc., especially around Hallowe'en) you still have to go to a retro candy store.

I just went last weekend - 4 boxes of Boo, 1 Frank, and a Quisp for hubby (yay!). I don't believe they make Pac Man anymore... I've never seen it in my cereal searchings, anyway.

I take exception to the "not the best tasting cereals" comment!! (ya, okay... it's blue drywall chunks with styrofoam marshmallows - but I love it :)

Try bellamiacandy.com - it's the store I go to in Buffalo. They have all 3 (& others) there, and the guy who runs it is accommodating & pleasant.

UPDATE FOR THE WINGS...

Went to Elmo's, and I gotta say I was a bit worried about the 'divey-ness' and moderately rowdy bar crowd (but hey - there was a game on, so no big deal). The patrons were a strange mix of the animated sports fans, and families/50+ diners in what was a full house. The staff was very friendly, and most important - the food was great. Wings were head-and-shoulders above the Anchor Bar, and though I didn't go with the Weck (a little too much caraway for my taste), I had the French dip, and it was delicious!
We both found the food a bit salty, but it was quite forgiveable due to the tasty satisfaction we got. We're going to try Duff's next, and see how they compare.
Thank you for this recommendation!!

Much thanks to everyone for your suggestions, I really appreciate it. Looks like we're going to work in the weck tasting & Ted's dogs. (might even try for some cinnamon custard, if we come across an Anderson's.)

I have to agree with the Anchor Bar thoughts here... I found it much more focused on 'tourist' than taste (my dinner was inedible, sent back, and the second one no better)

Thanks again for the recommendations!

Funny you should mention the drier wing, sbp, as my wing connoisseur actually prefers them less smothered.

Thanks, Kat - I've been reading about the beef on weck... sounds good, I'm certainly up for giving it a try.

...and my manly-man wants wings (surperise!). Buffalo doesn't seem to have a Chowhound, so I'm looking for some direction to great wings. We've been to the Anchor Bar, so if someone has a sugestion (excluding the Anchor), it would be very much appreciated!

Avanti (Oshawa)

Was there once with a group; pastas & fish for the most part. I think "average" would describe it accurately. I agree that while it may be a better choice for the Oshawa area, it's not worth the drive.
