Mid-range midtown restaurant suggestion for semi-formal dinner
Thank you all.
I should have mentioned that it is likely that most of us can get out of work only at about 6:45-7 pm at the earliest, so pre-theater may not be an option. Also, $50 (flexible) included tip / tax.
Mid-range midtown restaurant suggestion for semi-formal dinner
Hi,
I would like to dine with 2 other people in a semi-formal (i.e. no more formal than Telepan/ Nougatine), spend about $45-50 a person without alcohol, in a restaurant that serves good food and is close to midtown west (i.e the location of places such as Telepan and Nougatine are fine, Perry Street is probably not). I cannot think of such places - either way more casual places come to mind, or the Telepan / Nougatine range (which is slightly pricier), and would appreciate suggestions on this.
I should add that the location is not a binding constraint, so please let me know if you think that I should just travel to Perry Street or some such place that offers good value (through their pre fixe). Union Square area is also ok.
Related question - Are there any interesting dinner pre-fixe promotions (similar price) at present, that anyone would care to recommend?
Thanks.

Another very good meal at Riverpark
How does one know yet whether a restaurant is on Winter RW? GONYC is releasing the list only if one books a NYC vacation/ hotel thru them, according to their website. Otherwise, they release the list on Jan 12. Or maybe I am missing something...

I'm from Boston, NY Wife says: "NY Pizza is the best." So where is it?
I am a newbie compared to many on the site. I stumbled upon Cafe Artichoke just north of chelsea market at the corner of 17th and 10th yesterday. Very good pizza- tried the crab pizza, and the spinach/ artichoke one.
Coffee in the theatre district
Thanks kathryn; that helps. I had forgotten to consider them.
Coffee in the theatre district
I need to catch up with some out-of -town people in their late 60s/ early 70s after their matinee show today around 43rd and 8th. I am looking for suggestion for a spot for coffee and conversation around that area. I would have picked a place like Bouchon, but that's a fair distance up. I'd prefer spots within 5-6 blocks.
My backup is one of the Starbucks in the area. Any recommendations for which one makes better coffee/ is more spacious?
Thanks,
Sid
Moderately priced spacious restaurant - indian, chinese, thai or mexican?
Sorry, we missed this post. Anyway, to update, we were nervous about this and met our friends close to their place in Hoboken. Thanks for your interest,

Moderately priced spacious restaurant - indian, chinese, thai or mexican?
Hello,
We are meeting some friends who are coming into the city (using the PATH) with a 2 year old, and need a restaurant fitting the above criteria. we are meeting after ages, and so would like a place where we can sit and chat for a longish time, instead of an efficient 1 hour meal. Thank you in advance for your suggestions. About $12 an entree should be fine.

Lunch on Saturday near JFK Airtrain / Subway station
Thanks Peter. I wouldn't want my friend to walk for 15 min with luggage on a summer afternoon :)
Even if the places arent strictly chow-worthy, if you could come up with some decent places very close to the station, that would be ideal. Else, we shall try to do this. Appreciate your help.
Lunch on Saturday near JFK Airtrain / Subway station
My friend arrives at JFK (terminal 4) for a 4 hour layover on Saturday at noon. I am supposed to meet him. I don't have a car. He can take the airtrain/ subway; so can I. He is fine with a 15-20 min commute (includes walk from terminal to AirTrain, AirTrain to subway, and maybe a short subway ride if necessary. He doesnt want to spend too much time commuting, since we dont have that much time once you budget for the security lines, commute and lunch.
We would like to get decent food in an airconditioned place, and chat for a couple of hours. This needs to be really close to one of the Airtrain stations at Jamaica/ Howard Beach (or, worst case a couple of subway stops away).
Which direction should I ask my friend to take the Airtrain (towards Jamaica / E train or the Howard Beach stop)? Can we get something right by the Airtrain stop, where the food is decent and we can sit a while? Or shall I ask him to take the subway a few stops?
Thank you very much for your feedback.
Jean George restaurants for lunch
I have only eaten at Jean-George's main dining room. I am curious what the food at the other (less expensive) restaurants are like - Nougatine (i heard that the kitchen is the same as JG), Perry Street (how does its lunch compare to Nougatine & JoJo), Matsugen, JoJo, Mercer Kitchen, etc . I realize that the cuisines are not necessarily comparable, but still wanted a sense of which ones were the best deal.
Also, I think Nougatine and JG are the only ones that serve the lunch pre-fixe on Saturday - is that correct?
Which pre-fixe dinner do chowhounders like the most (among the $38 ones)?
Thanks,
S

Best pre-fixe lunch deal in Manhatten
Am I imagining things when I feel that the lunch food at JG and EMP doesn't taste as good as it used to, maybe, three years ago? Or is it just that I have got used to the flavors?
Telepan at dinner next week- what are their best dishes at the moment?
Telepan worked out as a great option. The ambience and service were exactly what we wanted, and the food surpassed our expectations. The house smoked trout, the lobster midcourse, the halibut entree and the chocolate-peanut better dessert were what i ordered, and was great. the other 4 ordered different things - asparagus, pea pancakes, chicken, a strawberry dessert, etc. everyone liked the food a lot. Thanks guys!

Moderately priced, impressive for out-of-towners and QUIET restaurant?
I would consider Tsampa or Chiyono in the East Village.
The noise level varies greatly at most places depending on whether it is a weekday or weekend, so if you have decided on that, it is easier to suggest.
There is a Japanese bar approx. above the St Marks bookshop (through a couple of unsigned doors, which open at 6 - sorry I dont remember the name) that doesn't allow more than 4 people, so that's an option to get a quiet drink, depending on your party size.

Telepan at dinner next week- what are their best dishes at the moment?
Hi,
I am planning to go to Telepan next week in a group of 5. Since the menu changes seasonally, I was wondering what the current chowhounder favorites on the menu are?
Thanks.

I am almost decided to go with Telepan. The reasons are:
While I think could do better foodwise with either of Allegretti and Perilla, the rest of the group (excluding me), is not that big on food. And, the food at Telepan seems perfectly adequate, by all counts.
It is important for them to have a nice long conversation. I think the more formal ambience suits that. Also, you get 4 courses at Telepan for the price of 3 at the other places (the wine is more expensive, though), so that should also give us more time together.
Thank you all for your help. I have already planned my next meals at Allegretti and Perilla, with some out-of-town guests.

Thanks; in that case, portion sizes aren't a consideration, especially since I'd get 4 courses at Telepan for the price of 3 at other places.
Yes, tablecloths would be very nice at Allegretti, but being a foodie, i am reluctant to ding it because of that.

Hello all,
After calling the restaurants and checking availability, I am trying to choose between Allegretti, Telepan and Perilla. Any suggestions? What are the portion sizes like? Do all these places have inventive and distinct flavors?
Thanks,
S

Thanks a lot!
I have been trying to call Allegretti, but the line goes dead / quiet right after i hear the recorded greeting. This has happened at least 10 times, and I am wondering whether there is a trick to it (such as waiting for more than 10 min, etc). I have called at various times from 2 pm to 6 pm.
Has anyone else faced this?

Chelsea Market and neighborhood recommendations
I am trying to collate what chowhounders really enjoy in/ around Chelsea Market. This is more for quick bites/ ice cream/ coffee/ things to carry home, rather than Del Posto type places.
Amy's Bread, the wine vault, Fat witch, the vegetable shop, the 9th Av coffee place, etc are some places that I have been to... still looking for the magic that people talk about. I really like the vibe of the place.
Thanks for contributing!

Thank you both. I hadn't realized that it happened to be graduation week that time. So restaurants are particularly busy.
After calling about 15 places, I have got myself a table at Tabla (just to be safe), and have got on the waitlist at Perilla and Blue Ribbon. I called the Italian places (Locanda Verde and Alto, etc), but they were offering me tables at 5:30 or at 10:30.

Thanks. Some of these should work. I'll check them out.
We'll probably pass on Tudor city, because people are all going to be traveling there separately, and some of them are from out-of-town.

Does Perilla satisfy this criteria? I looked at some pictures, and was wondering if it is a little too casual... any other suggestions are fine.
