The proper way to cook rice?

I've read that cooking rice in a lot of water and draining is supposed to reduce the arsenic content as is rinsing it before cooking.

best bagel in boston?

Has anyone tried Bagel Land on Main St in Winchester? Their bagels are pretty good, I especially like the pumpernickel or marble, but service is a little sketchy. My new fav though is Bagelsaurus Seeded Wheat since I tend to prefer not all white flour bagels. That said, give me Murray's in nyc any day!

Apple cider donuts?

My bf brought some back from Wilson Farm which we heated up for breakfast this morning. I'm almost convinced that the idea of cider donuts is far better than the reality. Maybe a trip to Russell Orchards could tip the scale.

Apple cider donuts?

Was at the Union Square farmers market this morning craving a cider donut. The only one to be found was at the Mariposa Bakery table so I chanced it. Came home and heated it up but it was the most disgusting donut I have ever had with no hint of cider. Couldn't even eat it.

August 2013 Openings and Closings

Apparently Bertucci's in Harvard Square is cleaned out and closed up. Not that we ever actually ate there but it will be mourned for its convenient at least weekly supply of pizza dough for homemade pizzas.

Dry Pasta Preference and Where in Boston/Burbs?

Pastene Whole Wheat Spaghetti, all-time favorite! No cardboard flavor here. I've only been able to find it at Shaw's for $2.49 or $2.99 a 16 oz. package. Not so keen on their WW Penne Rigate though.

Rod Dee Porter Square: Progress?

Mary Chung, obviously not Thai, has had water spinach on their specials. They do it in just a garlic sauce as well as in a fermented bean curd sauce which was fabulous!

Wedding present suggestions?

I've just learned that a friend who I've fallen out of touch with just married and I'd like to buy her/them a present. I was thinking of something like an OpenTable gift certificate but apparently that doesn't exist. I don't know them well enough to choose a restaurant they'd like and get a gift certificate there. I also don't know if they registered anywhere. I'm not in NY so I'd have to do this online or by mail. Any ideas?

Kumquat Recipes besides marmalade and preserves...

I was thinking of posting the same question recently since Whole Foods often has kumquats and I love them. It's not a recipe, but I cut them in half, remove and seeds and throw them in salads.

I have gotten a what I think is a great loaf of sliced pumpernickle at Darwin's. They either have it on the day old shelf or often after 4 p.m. will sell what's left of day's fresh loaf.
