Please help with a bridal shower salad buffet menu & cooking theme

What abouta tabbouleh or wheat berry salad instead of pasta salad?

What is your single worst meal ever in the DC/Baltimore area?

I've had dinner, brunch and drinks at Founding Farmers - I could never understand what all the hype was. Service is abysmal, food mediocre and the price point too high for the quality and service. I did like it's sister restaurant - Agraria on the Georgetown waterfront a little more - the service wasn't as hostile or shoddy there, but the food wasn't much better.

Inexpensive (Wedding) Catering options in DC

I was in the same boat as you last year when planning my DC wedding. It seems that there are plenty of expensive caterers in this city and few midrange ones. We ended up using Main Event caterers and doing heavy hors d'ouerves instead of a sit down dinner. The food and staff was fantastic. We worked with Rachael Slockett who was the consummate professional and remembered all the extra details. They should be right in your price range.

Fruit flies - help me get rid of them!

I've had this same problem...though I found that they seem to be living in the drip tray of my espresso machine...just enough water in there for them apparently. Besides dumping the tray after every use, filling a shot glass halfway with apple cider vinegar, then stretching some plastic wrap over the top and poking a few holes with toothpics in the plastic wrap allows the flies to fly in, but not out. The shot glasses are small enough that you can hide them in several cabinents to figure out where exactly they're coming from.

Looking for wineries with good food between DC and Hot Springs, VA

Route is TBD. If there is something awesome off the beaten path we'll consider taking that direction.

Looking for wineries with good food between DC and Hot Springs, VA

We're taking a trip down to The Homestead and would like to sample some of Virginia's finest wine on the way down. Any recommendations? We would prefer one that has a restaurant or at least a good cheese plate.

Also looking for recommendations for restaurants on the way there or near Hot Springs.

Thanks!

My heart still breaks thinking about how mediocre BA was kept alive whilst the hacked off Gourmet at the beginning of a burgeoning foodie revolution.

Weird/Bad Food Related Dates

This wasn't my date, but a date my roommate went on:

She was on an online dating site and a gentleman asked her out. She was a little hesitant because on his profile he indicated that he did not drink. They agreed on a Lebanese restaurant and met up there. The date proceeds with him telling her about the thousands of dollars of credit card debit he had and how he was pretty much broke all the time. She asked if it was ok if she ordered a glass of wine, he said yes but said that he didn't understand why she would want to drink something that was so expensive. It became obvious that his alcohol temperance was due to cost, not health reasons. When the bread basket came - balloon-like fresh pita bread - he tore off one end and stuck his hand in it like a puppet and then gestured with it like a puppet. He grabbed one of the falafel off the appetizer plate and tossed it back and forth between his hands before eating it. Generally abysmal table manners continued. The date ended he insisted on splitting the check. My roommate returned home, took one look at me and said "Do we have any gin in the house?"

3 days in DC... A little help

I second Bodega in Georgetown as a tasty, simple choice. I would also recommend Il Canale in Georgetown as a closer and delicious pizza alternative to 2Amy's.

Pappy Van Winkle in DC?

Go see Steve at Potomac Liquors on M street in Georgetown. Old Glory (practically catty corner from Potomac across M st) serves it at the bar.

wedding cakes

I just had a delicious lemon mousse with fresh strawberry filling done for my wedding by Chris Furin of Furin's Bakery. http://www.cakesbychrisfurin.com/ Chris' cakes are fantastic- the buttercream was light and not too sweet and the price was just right. The decoration was perfect too. I cannot reccommend him enough!

High Tea in DC

For a slightly different take on tea try Ching Ching Cha in Georgetown - it's a Chinese tea house and you can drop the 93 year old off curbside then park underneath Georgetown Park mall directly across the street. Their "tea meal" is delicious.

May I Have Some Food with That Salt? - a Report

I too have noticed that Oyamel often goes heavy on the salt.

Ideas for Georgetown and Adams Morgan, ethnic preferably

None of the restaurants I mentioned are anywhere near the water. All are at least 500 feet above sea level. Il Canale is near the canal in Georgetown but not flooded. Leopolds is also near-ish the canal, but again, 500 feet above sea level.

Il Canale in Georgetown for pizza, calamari and antipasti.

I second Bodega - a nice big pitcher of their cava sangria on the back porch is fabulous on a hot day.

Clydes in Georgetown is basically the same thing as Old Ebbitt Grill - owned by the same conglomerate group.

Leopold's Cafe in Cady's alley for Austrian food. They also have a lovely little patio for these lovely spring evenings we've been having.

1st time visitor.....need critique of list please!

Chadwicks isn't anything special, but it is significantly better and cheaper than Indigo Landing.

Date Night in D.C.

The sad thing is that he wouldn't get out of Legal Sea Foods for less than $30 either.

Date Night in D.C.

Ack! No! RUN! RUN from Legal Sea Food!

Cafe Atlantico, Old Ebbitt, BlackSalt, Hook, Kaz Sushi Bistro are all significantly better than LSF.

Very restricted diet - help me embrace the challenge!

Marinating meats in different kinds of vinegars and making reductions of those vinegars might be an interesting twist. I make homemade tarragon vinegar by sticking a few sprigs in a small bottle of white vinegar and letting it sit for a week or two. That's great on salads, chicken and fish. Porkchops marinated in cider vinegar with some cayenne and salt are delicous served with squash.

Can you substitute maple syrup for sugar as a sweetner? (your body breaks down maple syrup differently than sugar)

How about making balsalmic vinegar reductions - it turns sweet the more you reduce it.

National Margarita Day - 2/22

Guapo's on Wisconsin right across the street from the Tenleytown metro station. Their rocks margaritas are made with fresh lime juice.

Late night in Georgetown

George's Falafel on 28th and M is perfect for late night cravings - subs, falafel, cheese steaks. Perfect drunk food.

best pizza that's not Two Amys

I adore Il Canale. Their crust is very flavorful and toppings authentic.

Wanted: Cute cafe for late Saturday afternoon lunch in Springfield

I asked my fiance if there was anywhere good in Springfield and he said no as well...I guess the silence from this board means we will end up driving back to the District ravenous.

Wanted: Cute cafe for late Saturday afternoon lunch in Springfield

My girlfriends and I are doing bridesmaid dress fittings Saturday morning and will need a repast about 2 PM in the Springfield area. We are adventurous eaters but do not like chains or Chinese food and would prefer somewhere that we could enjoy a glass of wine as well.

Any thoughts fellow hounds?

fish tacos?

I don't know about any options in the Columbia area, but The Argonaut on H St NE in DC makes some really killer fish tacos.

Place to watch Sunday football with good beer? (Near Dupont if possible)

I'm pretty sure 51st State on Pennsylvania Ave in Foggy Bottom/West End is a Jets bar. Food is mediocre to bad, but they've got a decent beer list and do good cocktails. Avoid the burgers - they always come out well done and greasy. For food hop across the street and try out Bayou. Good Cajun/Creole/NoLa bites. Do NOT go to the Thai joint next to 51st state. Horrible beyond measure.

Are you supporting a certain team? In DC some bars are team bars and transplanted fans can get a little rowdy.

Coming to D.C. in April...We know nothing!! Need some good recs.

Oyamel is small plates mexican and one each would satisfy the little ones with 2 - 3 being good for the adults. They have a lovely brunch on weekends too.
