pittsburgh bachelor party food & drink
2 limos for sure. http://5dollarlimo.com/
I live where E. Liberty and Shadyside meet. Panini Guy, I totally agree that E. Liberty food is far better. I guess it depends on what the ambience is that OP is going for. I don't really think of E. Lib bars as anything "bachelor" party worth except maybe Mad Mex and it's probably too tight a squeeze for the group, Although, Lizette you could rent the room at Max Mex for dinner.
Sometimes when you're rolling with that large of a bachelor crowd, high energy/entertainment overrules food experience? with 20+ people, that rules out Dish, Yo Rita and many of the other smaller restaurants in SouthSide. While I don't like the food at either of these locations...they are considered more "party" atmosphere - Hofbrauhaus and Nakama.
If you're going to the Casino, you could go to Tilted Kilt as someone mentioned earlier (hot girls in midriffs) or Bettis Grille...both of which are in walking distance. If you want something a bit more upscale, Hyde park is also walkable.
If your group wants straight up clubs, Station Square is where to go for those places.
HTH!
Best Mussels Southside
Drive the 15 minutes to Point Breeze and have dinner at Point Brugge. I dream of the red curry mussels.

Yo Rita doesn't take reservations and is very small so I wouldn't do dinner there. Dish is great, but it's more intimate...not so much like high energy atmosphere. I don't think of Cafe Du Jour as an bachelor party dinner atmosphere either. Fatheads would be good for casual..but they also don't take reservations.

If you're all staying together at a hotel, take the 5 dollar limo around for the evening. They charge each person $5 per leg and you can reserve drop off and pick up. I think i've gotten 12 ppl in it at a time. If you want a manly nice dinner... i'd have dinner at Capitol Grille and then take the limo over to Southside. It's pretty young (shady side is older...like Shady grove), but Villa and elixir are probably the "older" places. Villa does bottle service which is pretty inexpensive. I did that for a bachelorette party recently. I've also had dinner for bachelorette parties in Southside and Nakama has been the most "lively" with the hibachi grill.

I have a reservation at 10 that night, will report back!

IF your timetable wasn't so tight, i would say point Brugge in next-door point breeze. Pamelas is probably the only place open that early. Straight up diner/greasy spoon. No mimosas or bloody marys...
Guys Visit to Pittsburgh
1. Delucas in strip district
2. Bettis grille, mcfaddens, calico jacks are all popular sports bars for game day stuff. I think atrias, which is much smaller ,has the best food over all of them and they do have TVs. The pot roast nachos are soo good.
3. You are close to lidias in the strip, but my favorite Italian restaurant is dish in south side...a 15 min drive. Not Italian, but close and very good is meat and potatoes (www.meatandpotatoespgh.com) which is just over the bridge and a short walk.
4. I love BBQ. There was a place reviewed in north side, but I haven't been? I haven't had any BBQ that rivaled the south or major cities.
5. Meat and potatoes downtown, fatheads is a casual very manly food destination in south side, sixpenn in downtown

Pho in Pittsburgh? Need advice from people who actually know what they are talking about!
i just make my own :( trams is...ok.
Dear Pittsburgh, help a visiting (this weekend) Canuck out? (I've learned some, need more!)
If you have a car, Point Brugge is one of my favorite brunch places and they have a really great bloody mary. I could eat the thai coconut curry mussels and liege waffle any day!
Also if you have a car, Lawrenceville is worth exploring. Piccolo Forno is a great BYOB italian restaurant and during the wait, we go across the street to round corner cantina for drinks.
Here's a drinks/meet people breakdown...if you are 20's/30s and you are:
- Preppy casual wasp-y style -
Shadyside - William Penn, Harris Grill, Shady Grove, Mad Mex
Southside - Hofbrauhaus beer garden, Double wide grille
- Trendy/see and be seen -
Shadyside - Shady grove, Soba, Casbah
Downtown - Bossanova, Seviche, Savoy
Southside - Elixir, Nakama
- Hole in the wall, dive bar-
Pretty much any bar in Southside
- Hipster-
Shadyside - Kelly's, BRGR
Lawrenceville - brillobox, Round corner cantina, remedy, alchemy & ale,
If you want trashy dance party club - anywhere in Station Square.

Dear Pittsburgh, help a visiting (this weekend) Canuck out? (I've learned some, need more!)
I'm 30 and my sister lived in toronto for 7 years so I think I can help you out a bit. First, I probably wouldn't eat any asian food in pgh as the asian food scene in toronto is so far superior.
Greasy spoons - Pamela's and Deluca
I really love meat and potatoes (www.meatandpotatoespgh) it's a gastropub not too far from where you are that I really enjoy for dinner. Bossanova is a scene-y place from Thursday-Saturday. If you're willing to take a cab, I live in shady side and it's crawling wit late 20/30 somethings that are single...Mad Mex, BRGR , Harris Grille, Shady Grove are all popular spots for drinks/dinner/meeting singles.
Top of the mountain, Isabela's on Grandview is my pick, but it's not very casual. If you want casual river views and drinks, Redfin blues on washington's landing is outdoors and on the water. Have fun!

Opinion Regarding My Food Plan
Where are you from?
1. i live in shadyside, and I really don't think Dinette is that great. I'd go to piccolo forno as backup over dinette
2. If you are from any city with great asian food or vietnamese food, i would skip vietnam pho and tram....they're fine since we have nothing better, but ,mediocre to any other city
3. Love salt of the earth
4. Make sure you get the red curry mussels at point brugge
5. Kaya is great
I would really suggest you add meat and potatoes to your food plan. since it's opened, i've brought various friends from out of town and they have all loved it. www.meatandpotatoespgh.com
Why not for saturday lunch, eat down in the strip district? grab some tongue tacos at the reyna stand, have some sushi at fish company, eat some pierogies at the polish deli next door, have a pepperoni roll at mancinis.
A lot of people like Kaya, many of my friends included, personally I have never been blown away by kaya. I would pick meat and potatoes, spoon or yo rita over it.
Dinner Near Before U2 Concert at Heinz Field
Meat and Potatoes and Sixpenn are great on 6 and penn, then you can just walk across the stadium. If you want to be on the stadium side, I like atrias...although it's more "home-y" than fun. Hyde park is pretty good.
Downtown Pittsburgh - near Omni

Meat and Potatoes gastropub- PGH
Hi everyone,
just wanted to let you know that I tried Meat and Potatoes (meatandpotatoespgh.com) on friday night (i believe the 2nd night they were open). Considering they had only officially been open for one night, I was really impressed. The space is really interesting. Cozy chairs, nice buzzy atmosphere. Nice bar in the center that would be a great place to get drinks or have dinner if you were by yourself and you wouldn't feel weird.
We tried a lot of different things. The appetizers were nicely sized. Easy to split amongst 4 people so that everyone had a generous bite:
- Fried brussels - if you like roasted brussel sprouts these taste just like them. Not super exciting, but good if you like your brussels
- Devil on horseback- amazing. date with chorio, i think goat cheese, wrapped in bacon. 4 to an order, a little nugget of deliciousness.
- potato skins with pork belly and ramps - how could it be bad? couldn't. was 1 medium size potato cut in half. Easy to split into a quarter per person
- mac and cheese - I try mac and cheese everywhere I see it on a menu. I thought it was better than six penn mac n cheese but probably a 7/10 on my mac and cheese scale.
entrees:
I LOVE sweetbreads...so when i found out they had sweetbreads piccata style, I was really jazzed...a whole entree of sweetbreads!! nom nom. They were delicious. It was a very very large portion of sweetbreads. They could probably halve the amount and I would be happy.
The table also had the ricotta gnocchi (very fluffy), salmon with brussel sprout kim chi (yummy) and the flat iron (also yummy)
We split an apple pie which I liked (very doughy, almost pancake like) but my girlfriend thought it was a little too doughy...depends I guess on your preference in an apple pie.
All in all, great first experience and I look forward to going back and trying it again! Wonderful addition to downtown. I live in shadyside/eastside and I rarely go downtown for dinner. Not only did I travel specifically for dinner downtown for a non work related dinner, I would do it again.
Child Friendly with Good Food in Pittsburgh??
park bruge in Highland park, point brugge in point breeze, brgr in eastside, piccolo forno in lawrenceville, are all places ive been to with kiddies and it's been great. Generally I think any well behaved kid can go anywhere earlier in the evening
Must Eats in PGH
I have never heard of Spak before! my husband will be very excited.
to OP, i would recommend Spoon ("bone marrow", "bacon & eggs", short ribs, sashimi and the burger are all awesome)
J'eet in PGH, great sandwiches, nice outdoor deck
I'm not sure if people in PGH are aware of this place as it's been around awhile, but I recently tripped over it and really enjoyed it.
They are in what is, I guess, called "Upper Lawrenceville", but it's on Penn so I would say it straddles Garfield as well. Literally across the street from Children's Hospital.
They have a cheerful indoor space and an outdoor back patio. Prices range from about $6-9 per sandwich and they come with a side salad (no iceberg, mixed greens!). I had the cuban and my husband had a cheesesteak. He liked it so much he got a turkey panini sandwich to go for later. The bread is nice and crispy, but chewy and the ingredients are high quality.
They have brunch as well, but I haven't made it to brunch yet. They are also BYOB. visions of brunch with mimosas are already in my future.
So, if you are looking for a solid sandwich/salad lunch or brunch place with a back patio and pleasant decor, i highly recommend you check out J'eet.
Pittsburgh bars/restaurants with "get close" seating i.e. sofas, couches, benches?
Soba has a great bar/lounge with sofas and couches. spoon does as well by a fireplace. I would vote for Soba over Spoon though for lounge-y close sitting
great restaurants in pittsburgh?
If you're staying in shadyside (i live in shadyside) i'd go to Salt of the Earth and Spoon and skip the other three.Bona Terra is very good, but the atmosphere/ambience leaves a fair amount to be desired. Eleven is great, but I think Salt and Spoon are just as good if not better.
anyone been to cafe zinho lately?
I used to go pretty often, but haven't been in probably a year and a half. Anyone been there lately? any thoughts?
Tapas in Pittsburgh
I have been to madrid, La Casa and Ibiza are mediocres comparisons. I suppose if she is really jonesing for the flavors, she can get it there, but it's definitely not the same. I was particularly turned off by La Casa when we saw them pull out a trader joe package and stick it in the microwave.
Converting Non-Believers- In Pittsburgh
i'm in my late 20's. most of my friends do enjoy great food and none of us are into chains and we all live in pittsburgh although most of us are in the city? anyways, my ideas to expand people's minds safely would definitely be: brgr, yo rita, tamari, silk elephant, soba. If you are thinking of locally owned but good non chain food at a reasonable price, i would throw in: point brugge (mussels, frites, mac & cheese), piccolo forno (everything is affordable but the bolognese lasagna is my fav), fatheads, tessaros.
Homestead Waterfront
We went to blue dust last weekend and thought it was pretty good and definitely NOT a chain. when you go on amity to head up the ramp to the bridge, you make a left at the stop sign and it is right on the other side of the track. Very very big beer selection. They have pierogie specials and wing specials. Our sandwiches were pretty good. I had the pulled pork and enjoyed it a lot and was mostly happy not to be eating chain food. Please check it out!
Ethnic,budget restaurants in Pitt
- Lulu/ yum wok on n. Craig street was a college staple and still regularly in the rotation. I stick primarily to the noodle/soup dishes (wonton noodle, pad Thai, Singapore etc) it is really cheap. Like 6.95 for 1 noodle dish that lasts 2 meals.
- union grill - not ethnic, but local owned and solid, affordable American food. Burgers, salads.
- tamarind - Indian food , n. Craig. I like the buffet.
Do they have a car? Squirrel hill is very bus accessible and has a lot of Thai/ asian (bankok balcony, rose tea cafe, silk elephant) and mid eastern restaurants (mediterranean grill, aladdins, taza21)
also with a car, some other affordable ethnic eats are Penn ave/ s. Highland. Vietnamese at trams, Ethiopian at bay.
A trip to the strip on sat or Sunday yields many affordable, fun ethnic eats (reynas tAcos, Peruvian chicken, bang mi, Mancini pepperoni roll....to name a few)
Also lawrenceville has some great restaurants that are affordable (piccolo forno, iastanbul grille)
Salt of the Earth
a couple of friends and I went this past weekend. between us we tried the:
Appetizers - tartare, brioche, octopus
Entrees - Flat iron steak, Pork belly, Monkfish w/brussel sprouts kimchi & rice cakes, duck
dessert - the chocolate dessert and cheeseplate
and a few of the drinks
Apps were top notch. I LOVED my steak tartare with a little touch of truffle oil. came with some toasted bread and endive. delicious. Brioche was very popular at the table (crabmeat, poached egg and a creamy...almost hollandaise tasting sauce). Octopus was well prepared.
entrees were excellent. Flat iron was a tad boring..but it was for the more conservative tasters. Pork belly was my favorite. THe duck was also very good and so was the Monkfish (usually walleye but they ran out).
Cheese plate was pretty boring. The chocolate dessert was delicious. kind of tasted like a creamy fudgesicle. a few french press coffees to go around. We each had at least 1 drink, some 2 and it came to $75 a person trying everything including coffee.
Dining in Healdsburg - Help needed
hi, i just posted my review of healdsburg/santa rosa and guernville areas below (called dry river/russian river review)
Cyrus was great. we really enjoyed our meal at Farmhouse inn in forestville, about a 20 minute drive. we also really liked the drinks at Spoonbar.
Our favorite (scenery) was Ironhorse which has an outdoor tasting room and specializes in bubblies. Also liked the Bella tour with wine caves and really enjoyed the wines at Unti.
Russian river/Dry river reviews. Thanks for your help! (zazu, farmhouse, cyrus)
Hi Chowhounders!
Just wanted to thank you all for your contributions to this board. i gleaned over lots of reviews to put together our itinerary. We went over this labor day weekend and decided to focus on russian river/dry river hoping that there would not be a lot of crowds. Got in on Friday morning and left Monday morning.
We stayed at the Farmhouse inn for our stay. www.farmhouseinn.com great B&B. Delicious breakfast included each day. assortment of teas, coffees and fresh juice. They have a help yourself beauty bar with scrubs, soaps and milk bath. Snacks and sodas to take with you on the road.
We hit a number of wineries, many of the recommendations came from you guys. Some hits, some misses:
Merry Edwards
Ironhorse
Michel-Schlumberger
Preston
Bella
Unti
Ridge
We had a picnic lunch at Preston one of the days (delicious bread and olive oil!) picking up some meats at the Oakville grocery in Healdsburg.
Zazu - dinner the first night was at zazu. Nice casual, comfortable vibe. Loved the chiles app and the BLT salad. Friend and I had the black pig confit which seemed to be a braised pork shoulder with homemade noodles. we talked about going back in the consequent days just for this again, but it didn't work out. My other friend got the tomato soup and grilled cheese (loved it) and my husband loved his steak but wished he had gotten the pork dish as well. With a few sides of bacon and a bottle or two of wine, great start!
Farmhouse inn - Dinner was at the farmhouse inn the next night. My husband started with the buffalo carpaccio (delicious) I had the trio of tomato soup w/dungeness crab. nice, light start. My husband had a skillet roasted pheasant that was amazing. my girlfriend had the halibut which she loved as well. I ended up getting the rabbit cubed and while it was good, it threw me off a little as I had never had rabbit before. The confit leg tasted like moist turkey breast, the loin in bacon and a strange hard sausage texture. I think it might just be me never having had rabbit before and not knowing what to expect. The desserts were the highlight. Caramel gelato w/cocao nib cookies are not to be missed, nor the chocolate souffle.
Cyus - Cyrus is cyrus. not much to say except it lived up to our expectations and it was a wonderful meal. People were starting to fade towards the 6th course as our reservations began at 8pm and it had been a long day so far. In total dinner was about 3.5 hrs long. it didn't feel rushed, but also didn't linger too long. impeccable service. My favorites were the thai lobster and the corn risotto with black truffle.
Healdsburg Bar & Grill - we ended up having a lunch here. loved the truffle fries, burgers and the mac and cheese. Heavy, but satisfying.

Lunch Reviews from a recent Pittsburgh Trip – Il Pizzaiolo, Lidia’s, Casbah, Prantl’s.
wow, what great, specific reviews! Sorry to hear you had a rough time at Casbah. while not everyone is a fan, I really love Casbah...although i live half a block away. I also always get the same thing, the double cut pork chop.
Prantl's does have the most amazing burnt almond torte. Other bakeries try to compare, but they cant. I actually had the burnt almond torte as my wedding cake. Not the most beautiful cake, but the best tasting wedding cake ever!
Bona terra is a fantastic restaurant. Glad you had a chance to experience it!
