Ludo Pops Up in the Triangle

Just watched the Raleigh episode of Ludo Bites America on Sundance. Everything looked outstanding! I wish I had known about it before I saw the noon news talking about it this afternoon.

Best Eastern NC BBQ

Somehow I doubt they are cooking both whole-hog and shoulders, and keeping it all separate, in addition to other differences. I have a collection of sauces in my cabinet as well. That's not to say it isn't good, though!

hops bread

That sounds great! I know the spent grains make great soups, I'll look into putting them into bread as well!!

hops bread

I don't know anything at all about it. I ran across hops bread, reading about Caribbean foods. Some things have said it has absolutely nothing to do with hops and that the name was derived from something different, while other things have included hops in the recipe, but for no apparent reason. I was started thinking that something like hops may be a good addition to a bread, geared towards my personal tastes, with some hops varieties' bitter and slight citrusy profile.

Can anyone tell me anything about hops bread?

Upscale Sunday Brunch in Raleigh/Durham/CH

As far as I know, no Sundays at all, at the Second Empire. Maybe consider the Fearrington House, in Pittsboro?

Upscale Sunday Brunch in Raleigh/Durham/CH

My experience at the humble pie was very good. The food came out quick and was good; the waiter wasn't overly attentive, but was certainly attentive enough.

I've always been curious about the beerknurd brunch at the flying saucer.... clearly the brews are the highlight, but i;ve never made it by... have any knurds on chow actually been?

What're the areas you're trying to suggest towards? Where's your friend staying? It could easily be over an hour and a half drive between some parts of Raleigh proper to some parts of Chapel Hill proper. Not to mention some of the Raleigh suburbs that have become destinations in their own right, in recent years.

Restaurant advice in downtown Raleigh

I feel like the portions are pretty average for a Q restaurant. You can make 2 satisfying meals out of it, if you choose. I guess that it's just that people expect prices to be within 20-30 cents of other Q places in the neighborhood, and they're not. You pay a little extra for the atmosphere and the reputation of the pitmaster. You're expected to tip the waitstaff more than a dollar a person (That statement is not an intent to derail the thread, please nobody take it as bait). And Q prices in general aren't what they used to be because places seem to be using better meat than they used to use. At least that's my impression.

Restaurant advice in downtown Raleigh

From what I understand, it's cooked over hardwood coals (oak and hickory specifically). I mean Raleigh proper, certainly downtown. Cooking Q is certainly a craft and can easily be turned into mush or rawhide by someone who doesn't know what they're doing or trying to do too much of it (see once-great places in Wilson/Rocky Mount).

Restaurant advice in downtown Raleigh

I've never been to Holy Smokes, so I'll have to check it out, but I prefer the food at the Pit to that at Cooper's. Cooper's just doesn't do it for me. I never said anything about liking the atmosphere at the Pit. It's a huge turnoff. I have to really want the food to even go there for takeout - dining in once was more than enough for me. I also said that I agree that it's pricey. But how you can say that their food is not as good as any other Q place in the area is astounding to say the least.

Raleigh/RTP recommendations

Sorry I missed this thread for your trip, but maybe I can help you for a future visit or help someone researching.

As far as beer goes, in Raleigh there's the Peace Street Market which is, as you may be able to guess, on Peace Street. It's between Glenwood and St. Marys. They've got as good a selection as anywhere I've seen. There's a nice mix between warm beer to save for later and lots of great beer in what I'd guess to be 25+ cooler doors for immediate consumption. Farther out into North Raleigh, even outside of the 540, there's a deceptively well-stocked gas station (BP, I think) on Louisburg Rd called Team Beverage. It's at the intersection of Louisburg and Fox Rd. Very, very, very impressive selection for a specialty store, much less a gas station. (40+ cooler doors devoted to craft brews.)

In Durham, there's Sam's Quik Mart. Quite possibly the best beer selection I've ever run across anywhere. There's nothing I can really say to prepare you for the scope and selection you'll find there. Not much in the way of bargains, unfortunately. All I know is that it's near an underpass on Erwin Rd. I've always had to just ride around until I've found it.

Hope that helps and once again, I'm sorry I didn't get to it sooner.

While I would agree that the Pit is kinda pricey for what you get, the food is second to none in the area (as far as Q goes). Unfortunately, TOGO is the only way I'm willing to eat it. I really wish they had a second, kinda dirty/dingy entrance near the loading dock that was for TOGO orders only.

Wouldn't the Red Room be Glenwood South?

Restaurant advice in downtown Raleigh

I can second the Solas recommendation. I've only gotten a selection of small plates, but everything I've had, each time I've been, has been nothing less than outstanding. Just don't wear your work boots, but I'd suggest that for Glenwood South in general.

Raleigh Thanksgiving Options

I don't know if they still do it or not, but Margeaux's used to put on one of the most impressive holiday spreads I've ever seen, anywhere.

Eastern NC BBQ Odyssey

Sorry it took so long. If you're still interested, the address is 11792 NC 97. I see you already got the hours. Oven-cooked isn't surprised; they didn't try real hard to sell me on the Q, as much as they did on fresh sides, ribs, and chicken. Especially the ribs.

Eastern NC BBQ Odyssey

no, i'll get you an address and some hours, hopefully before the weekend. all i know off-hand is that it is on the south-bound side of the road, between US 301 and the food lion (a 5-6 mile stretch). If you look on google earth, it's the free-standing building that looks like a restaurant, between dunbarton road and shenandoah drive, on nc 97 south; south rocky mount vicinity, west of US 301.

Best Sandwich in the Triangle?

Wow - How has no one mentioned the Rockford? Not only is it actually in Raleigh proper, but it's even INSIDE THE BELTLINE!! It's on Glenwood South, across from the Hibernian. The ABC sandwich is outstanding, but I've never heard any complaints on anything ordered from there.

Eastern NC BBQ Odyssey

I've been hearing a lot lately about Rev Wayne's in Rocky Mount, on NC 97 near the airport. It may be worth adding to your trip. I've been trying to get by there but just can't seem to make it in when I'm in the area. As soon as I do, I'll let you know if it's worth the stop-in.

Barbecue Recommendations in Boone/Blowing Rock Area

Woodlands is gonna be as good as it gets in the immediate area. But if you aren't afraid of a short drive, Hannah's in Lenoir is pretty awesome and I recall Spear's in Linville Falls as being pretty good. (full disclosure: I'm a former Spear's employee from back in my college days.)

Roxboro, NC for a Sunday Dinner?

I have had an opportunity to eat there personally, but the Middleburg Steak House in Henderson has come highly recommended to me on several occasions.

Coca-Cola "Hecho en Mexico" in Charlotte or Durham?

I found it in Rocky Mount, but the ingredients include HFCS. It was in a Latino store and each bottle had the big, yellow imported sticker on it. I had also heard they were made with cane sugar so i decided to seek them out, but found that not to be true once i found the product. Go for a Jones instead.

In case anyone is interested, it is a Latino market at the intersection of sunset avenue and old carriage road in rocky mount, nc. they were in a cold box to the left of the register, by the door.

My dear Raleigh friends, please save me from Golden Corral!

the raleigh mccormick and schmicks is pretty awful, compared to the rest of the chain. bad, slow service and average food. you can get lots more service and quality for your money anywhere else in raleigh.

North Carolina seafood restaurants - which ones source locally?

I apologize - that was misleading. I meant everything possible and that "local" was a focus of the menu. You caught my hyperbole.

Brunch in Richmond

well, the banister/grand staircase thing is part true, allegedly. the actual claim by the people at The Jefferson is that it was the inspiration for the movie set.

that said, i recommend tobacco company or really anywhere in the sockhoe area.

North Carolina seafood restaurants - which ones source locally?

Bistro By the Sea in Morehead City sources everything locally and will always be an outstanding meal. It's on Hwy 70 on the right hand side as you come into town, in front of the Hampton Inn.

Also, check out http://www.carteretcatch.org for lots of info on where to find locally sourced seafood around morehead city, beaufort, atlantic beach, emerald isle, swansboro, and other surrounding areas.

Cheese & Beer (and more) in Charlotte, NC

"Does PBR really go bad? :-)"

Doesn't that beg the question, "Can something go 'bad' that never was 'good'?"

Serious enough though - yea, it can get worse without proper temperature control but I don't think light is as big of an issue with PBR as much as it is with some of the more temperamental specialty brews.

Hot dog options in Durham/Chapel Hill?

There used to be a place behind the old Durham Bulls baseball field that was really good. I don't know the name of it off-hand, nor do I know if it's still there, but I remember it being pretty easy to find and being the only thing by the field. If i remember correctly, it's just over the center or right field wall.

as far as beer in charlotte goes, Brawley's is THE place to go. Bypass all other imitators and attempts at a beer selection.
