Falafel Inn Norwalk

Hi Temil. No, I still have not been able to make it to Cafe D'Azur. I'm out of town but will give it a shot as soon as I get back.

Your disappointing purchases from Costco

The ready made falafel's(sp) and the Manchego cheese. The cheese was not even close to a proper Manchego but then at 7.99/lb, I should have expected it. Otherwise I love the place

Grilling Italian Sausage-split or not to split?

There is no proper way. Try them both ways and see which one you like better. It's not foie gras where you waste a bunch of money if you mess up. I personally love them split and charred within an inch of their life on the BBQ, hey but that's me!. If I'm having sausage and peppers, cut into 1 inch rounds. They are inexpensive enough to experiment with.

Falafel Inn Norwalk

Temil- thank you, will give it a try and report back.

Falafel Inn Norwalk

I tried Myrna's several times and found it to be "Fairfielderized". No punch in flavors and the quality of the spices used were lacking. Middle eastern food is known for big, bold and brash flavors of excellent quality spices, citrus, garlic and complex flavors that go "bang" on the pallet and found none of that present. It's another case of a restaurant trying to be all things to all people. Do one thing, and do it well. I've stopped looking and now go to Paterson NJ if I'm feeling ME. Tired of getting second rate food at ridiculous prices. Anyone thinking they can charge $10 for a Falafel App is insane

Falafel Inn Norwalk

IMO it was the best ME place from Greenwich to Norwalk/Westport and I tried them all. Columbus Park, High Ridge Rd and the place in Greenwich that lasted all of 6 months. A shame to see it go

Falafel Inn Norwalk

Does anyone know why this place closed? Have driven by several times and the place looks like they have gone out of business.

What can stand the deep freeze?

Looking for foods that you might not think of freezing but are surprisingly good when defrosted. Took some advice on freezing cream cheese and was very disappointed after defrosting. The CC separated into an unpleasant flaky mess. Looking for ingredients or final dishes that are great to freeze with little to no change in taste or texture when defrosted. The catalyst for this question is me being single and having a membership to a warehouse club which I love shopping at.

Food foreigners take back home when they visit America.

I have relatives in Poland and they request/bring back a ton of stuff whenever they visit. Costco definitely boost it's bottom line when they come over. Some things they are crazy about is cinnamon gum, pistachios, dried mango, whole pepper, cereal of any kind - sweeter the better, EVOO (simply based on cost), Starbucks whole bean coffee, Splenda, maple syrup, Taster's Choice coffee and California Prunes -Must Be from Cali. They bring full suitcases of this stuff back and what doesn't fit, gets shipped via boat which arrives a couple of weeks later along with their clothes. Nuts but I guess I have this stuff readily available to me so I don't crave it and when I do, I hop in the car and am satisfied in a matter of minutes

Home Made pastrami

I would head over to Greenpoint Brooklyn. Tons of places that make sausage so I'm sure they would sell you some.

Navy beans- soaked two night now smell HORRID!

Toss them. New beans are cheaper than the Dr.

REAL Japanese ramen in CT

If memory serves me right, I think there was a Japanese Noodle vendor selling noodle soup in the back of Fjord Fisheries on River Road in Cos Cob. I know Fjords has moved but I'm not sure about the noodle vendor. There was an article in the Greenwich Times about the operation.

Church suppers in CT

There is the Polish National Home in Hartford that serves an after church "supper". I call it a supper because that is the time when people in Poland have their biggest meal of the day. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/27/nyregion/dining-keilbas-and-all-the-fixings-home-style.html
It is a very nice experience whether you are Polish or not. You can really feel these sense of community and togetherness that is so lacking these days. The food is a good approximation of what it should be but my opinion might be a little biased because I grew up in Poland and have experienced more "authentic" versions of the food they serve. For what it's worth, my girlfriend at the time who was Ecuadorian, loved it more than any other place in Hartford, and we ate out ALOOOOOOOT.

New CT Farmers' Markets Laws Related to Jams, Jellies, Preserves and Salsas

I remember two years ago. the farmers market in Greenwich by the highway stopped selling apples for some reason. I was away this summer and fall and did not have a chance to go. Did they bring back the apples? Never got a definitive answer as to why they stopped selling apples but was curious if anyone knows

Please Help Me show them the light!

Will be in Jay Peak Vermont (I'm from NYC) next week and will be making a day trip to Montreal for some delicious food. Please give me some recommendations on what best captures Montreal and all the deliciousness it has to offer. I have been trying to get my friends to come with me to Montreal but they are being stubborn. If I can't get them to come willingly, maybe I can convince their bellies to see the light. I'll be alone, as usual, and need to get some things that will hopefully make them change their minds about coming with me when the weather turns a bit. I love Montreal any time of year but I think I should ease them into the experience. Two things that I know I'll be bringing back are bagels and smoked meat and would love to get some recommendations. Please help me!! Tired of exploring Canada Friendless!! LOL Happy Holidays

Batali and Bastianich store to open in Port Chester

You are entirely correct, there is parking in the area but the deal breaker for ME is that it is not convenient. It is one thing to take a leisurely walk to your car parked near Willett House after a large meal on a nice spring or summer evening but an entirely different beast having to schlep a couple of blocks with grocery bags in the rain. I wish the store nothing but success but before PC does something about traffic patterns and parking in the Village, shopping at Tarry Market will be a bit more challenging than just going to the market.

Batali and Bastianich store to open in Port Chester

I'm going to love the traffic on Saturday morning on the corner of Main and Mill. No idea what these guys were thinking opening a 70K SF store on Main Street where there is absolutely no parking

Authentic Poppyseed (or nut) Babka within driving distance of Fairfield County?

I think that if I am reading this correctly you are looking for Makowiec and not Babka. Warsaw Deli in Stamford on Main Street has a decent one, not too much dough, flavourful poppy seed filling with a proper amount of raisins. Go Thursday's after 1pm, that is when they get their weekly delivery so everything is as fresh as it's going to be.

Myrna's Greenwich

I think that little stretch of The Post Road from the corner of Greenwich Ave. to the library is doomed. Most businesses that try to get established there fail and I think I know what the culprit is. Lack of parking. I think Barcelona is making it because the crowds tend to come later in the evening when more street parking is available. I was only able to get takeout from Myrna's once. Didn't go back because I couldn't find parking. Terrible that they made the place so nice and had to leave

Myrna's Greenwich

Drove by today and saw the windows covered with butcher paper and a note on the door. Any ideas as to what's going on. They just recently opened.

Unpasteurized milk in Ulster County, Marbletown/Kingston area

Quite common in Europe. Many cheeses cannot be made properly with pasteurized milk. Although not crazy about the unpasteurized stuff, I think that people should have an option. It's actually illegal to sell unpasteurized milk in some states. On Saturday's there is a farmers market in Greenwich and one of the vendors sells the stuff. Last I remember he was asking $6 for a half gallon.

NJ canning supply source

If anyone would have it it would be Corrados Market in Clifton N.J. They cater to the do it at home guru. They have their own - at home wine making portion of the store where you can buy anything from Oak barrels to the actual grapes needed for wine making. Pretty sure they would fit the bill.

Fresh Sauerkraut

Having lived many years in Europe, I am having a difficult time finding fresh Sauerkraut at the market. I've tried the American/Hebrew choices but I find them far too enriched with chemicals. A true Sauerkraut should be firm to the bite and flavourful without the vinegar after taste. I would much appreciate any information. Thank you

Middle Eastern Food outside of Stamford

I love the food at Falafel Inn at 333 Westport Ave. Norwalk. Found it to be the best ME place in the area. Regularly travel up from Greenwich for a $4 Falafel Pita passing all the places you mentioned. Has been discussed extensively here.

Gourmet Sausage to Grill in lower Westchester?

If you want to knock the socks off of your guests, head on down to Scarpelli's Deli on Bible St. in Cos Cob. Real homemade Italian sausage. I've been using them for years and always run out of the stuff. Call first to see if they are open because they have some pretty odd hours. Also, Warsaw Deli in Stamford have a great selection of European style sausage make sure you don't buy something very lean because it will turn into sawdust as most of these sausages are already smoked.
