Visiting my daughter and need advice
Thanks for all the fab suggestions, going to spend the weekwnd looking them all up and deciding, So still need a suggestion for my 17 year old son, think I got the english tea , dinner and romantic one day hotel covered even if I have to pay $3 when they are 69 cents in the market within walking distance from my house in Los Angeles and I am a chef so I have opened thousands of oysters in my time. He is in that weird tween age and we will celebrate his 18th bithday there. He not a foodie as well as the seafood allergy, and we have planned a couple of touristy non food things, stopping along the way as we are driving slowly up but although picky about food (he lives for burgers and pizzas) he likes atmosphere. His fave restuarant near our house is Friscos you can look it up online where the waitresses wear basically pink tutu skirts and roller skates and you sit in cut off old cadillac booths, and the ceiling is painted with clouds with 50's icons like Elivis. Food not in my fine dining idea but more of a teenager Dave and Busters or Chucky Cheese but because my four of my five teens are all going to drive up there with us looking for something like that between Everett and Seattle, singing wiaitresses, whatever, kitsy and kind of burger/ shake fry joint.
Visiting my daughter and need advice
Coming to Everett the first two weeks in June to see my daughter and granddaughter, both she and hubby work on the base. I have been to Seattle area before on business so do have a sense of the area but here is what I need:
a) A restuarant/shop that serves high English tea (my daughters request)
b) A "downtown" or other hotel in Seattle that has a seafood resturant within walking distance. Money is not an object but but would rather not pay $3 for an oyster. Looking for a hotel and resturant where we can walk and not have to drive that has good seafood in a non stuffy " fru fru" atmosphere. We plan to it in the midweek to take the trip in a hotel and stay over for one night.
c) Our 17 year old son is coming with us so also looking for a fun restuarant day/night with him and he is allergic to seafood, so something a teenager may like.
Thanks in advance
Know any businesses that sell microwaveable plastic food containers in the LA metro?
I do not know if they can legally sell you but Bunzl LA may be able to point you in right direction
Restuarant on Ventura - I need help!!!!
My brother who's not a foodie( yes we came from the same parents) went last week and is obsessed with it. . Here is the info as I know it. Heading west on Ventura towards Sepulveda between Woodmanand Van Nyes, but just past Woodman on the right hand side.He says it starts with a "C or"S". and he had roast beef tacos but it was a Creole/Cajun fusion restuarant. Does anyone know what this may be?

I work for a natural food supplier where I still dont understand tofurkey and soyrizo but imitaion sharks fin is beyond my scopr . The money should be be spent saving the sharks if you dont want to eat them
Driving to Seattle [moved from Los Angeles board]
I just became a Grandma and driving to Seattle second week in June to see my new Grandaughter. Reason we are drining instead of flying is the baby shower was here in LA and we have tons of gifts to carry and deliver. So my question is if anyone has done this route is there anywhere you would not miss eating at along the 19 hour trip, places that are maybe off the beaten path. Will stop overnight but want original Mom and Pop Like Diners, Dive and Drive Ins not fancy and even though this a foodie site, any attractions along the way that we should not miss? We are purposely avoiding the big cities to take the off beat path and just take our time.
Emergency Bar !
I didn't think about it but the weather suits the mood. Also for all concerned she is a commuting too so no driving.
Emergency Bar !
Just got a tearful phoncall from a jilted (email breakup) girlfriend who works downtown. I take the comuter bus from 7th and Fig home, but I promised her if in walking distance I would help her drown her sorrows and peel myself onto the commuter bus today. Know it's short notice but a dive, happy hour or pub or otherwise is good. He isn't worth $15 dollar martinis. He's not a chowhound so that's already two strikes aginst him, besides chowhound men are the best(what a way to get responses)!
Lakers/LA Live help!
Hubby and I got a Xmas gift of second row seats to Lakers game New Years Eve( never been to the Staples center) and both of us have the day off but we live about 25 minutes from the center, and not New Years party people and don't want to be on the road really late. However, would like to have a nice dinner at LA Live or nearby and read all the the reports (did my homework) but none seem consistent or faboulous as far as picking a place to go, also looking for a dinner before the game so has to be open by 5 PM. Would like a sit down dinner but really don't want to pay 50 dollars for a six ounce filet. I could go for a tasting menu -any suggestions or even willing to spring for a downtown hotel that may have a package deal where we could walk or take the train where we may be able to celebrate New Years and stay up late
Dine LA - where NOT to go...
I want to go but based on the huge ad in the LA Times where do I go apart from looking up each menu online and price - what has been good in the past?
L.A. County Fair
Cocopalm is about five minutes away from the fair - always good with a great view and the Sunday Brunch is great with live music - they have a website

Flan
My best friend just lost 70 pounds and we want to celebrate with her favorite food ever for her birthday which is flan. We dont care how fancy the restuarant is as long as it is in the general LA County area and if you guys have lots of suggestions we may go on a flan fest as we care about is the flan as she has not had one in one year. We have the same taste flan wise - we both like the caramel dark and almost to the point of being bitter, has to be really creamy and light and almost slippery on the tongue not heavy and dense and defintetly not too eggy.
Bloody Mary
Summer is here and it is hot and humid and I love Bloody Marys. Researched and did not find what I wanted on the website. Do not want a Bloody Mary out of a plastic bottle that is so thick it tastes like spicy ketchup or a Bloody Mary brunch bar with the same plastic bottle of thick paste. Does anyone know of a restuarant that makes their own Bloody Mary mix that is light and refreshing?
My suggestions+request for new/funky in the West Inland Empire? Covina, San Dimas, Claremont, Upland, Pomona, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Chino etc.?
3 vinos in downtown covina is quite good especially the live music, nice patio for a weekend lunch, then shop downtown covina. Or for a visit to th Summer Friday evening Covina Farmers Market and a short walk to the redtayrant for music and dinner.

Fish for Lent Sherman Oaks/No Ho

New Year's Eve - tell me stories!
Last night my husband and I stayed home with someone close to us is very ill so since we couldn't celebrate the new decade and New Year in style I was hoping my fellow chowhounds would share with me and all of us (and perk me up as I am working today) any great stories or food or restaurant experiences you had last night around town last night. Also Happy New Year to you all and I wish you all the best and Happy Eating!
Spectacular Weekend Brunch Buffets for $40 or Less
It seems like driving is not an issue, I have had two good experiences at Coco Palm in Pomona. It is in the price range, the restaurant is Cuban so apart from the standards they have nice Cuban dishes, the view is wonderful and the band plays some nice Caribbean music which is a change from the usual jazz.
coconut ice cream
Does anyone know if any Los Angeles Ice Cream shops make a really good real coconut ice cream - preferably with bits of coconut in it
Help for dinner 7th/Metro tomorrow Thursday
I got a last minute call to meet a friend tomorrow who's flying in for the day. I take the commuter bus home from 7th/Metro station and the last one is at 6:30 so I need a nice resturant within a block's walk. The only things I know of is Morton's (a little more formal that I want) across the road and Roy's down tthe way. Any other suggestions. Any cuisine is fine. We are big into sharing appetizers and small plates rather that a 20 ouce steak.
Worchester Sauce
Robbie's Vegan Worcestershire Sauce, available at Whole Foods and other natural markets and on line. Very good.
Seafood with "white sauce"
Looking for favorite recomendations for restaurants in the LA county area are for seafood with a clear sauce. Not a huge fan of tomato or cream based sauces with seafood and love a sauce that is mostly like a broth with fresh garlic, lemon and herbs, and like to get dressed up and eat out, so I know the first thought is cook it yourself but that's why we all write on this board because we like to eat out. Here is the problem. The problem is not the seafood, LA is quite good at policing and standards are quite high across the board. It disintegrates from, fresh seafood to:
a) too aldente pasta coated in rancid canola oil from a five gallon container, the pasta kept under the saute station uncovered for two days that allows no absorption of sauce
b) peeled cloves of garlic in 5 pound containers pureed in cheap oil and left out for the six hours of service
c) The same cheap brand of wine used everywhere in th five gallon cardboard box that is used to deglaze burnt oil and garlic
d) if olive oil is used it is destroyed by heating it too high to get the meal out quickly
I have no problems waiting for the food or grossly overpaying the price set for seafood in LA, there just has to be a restaurant out there that does ir right and treats the seafood as the star.
Table Side Caviar Service
My mother is coming for a visit from her retirement home in Florida and asked for caviar and champagne for her holiday gift. Years ago I took her to the (pre CUT days) Dining Room at the Regent Beverly Wishire where the caviar service was a whole production with the server making caviar quenelles with two spoons and preparing your first taste to order. That is what I am looking for - a whole experience (of the caviar presentation) not just the caviar in the jar on ice surrounded by condiments - preferably in LA county -thanks
Help on Melrose
I am taking my youngest son (14) to Melrose on Saturday(12/27) for clothes shopping and bonding time (we live in Covina) - then to Hollywood to spend the night with a cousin who lives behind the Capital building - I have got the Saturday night and Sunday morning (Farmers Market) planned out but I need somewhere to make me ( 40 something with five kids) look cool for lunch on Melrose in the shopping district. We are taking trains and buses so driving is not an option - don't care what type of cuisine just as long as it can make a jaded 14 year old is impressed when he walks in - thanks in advance
