Gjelina Take Away - first thoughts

I adore GTA and will continue to eat there regularly, but must express a tiny hint of sadness that the awesome $5 breakfast sandwich is now $6.50. Still a good deal though, relatively speaking!

I am so bored , stop the hype

I'm not sure what PF Chang's has to do with this thread but I agree.

To me, Mao's is to Chinese food what Alejo's is to Italian food, large portions of sub par ingredients masked in gloppy sauces.

I am so bored , stop the hype

While I whole heartedly agree with all the other recs, I wouldn't call Mao's a slam dunk. The ingredients are of poor quality and drowned in excessive grease, often with overly sugary sauces. I live a couple of blocks away and wouldn't eat there, I doubt it's worthy of a visit from an out-of-towner.

Good place for a party for 75-100 people?

The rooftop lounge at the Thompson Hotel in BH might be worth a shot. I've been to several parties there and it's a great space with a fantastic view. There's plenty of room as it's on 2 levels. Everyone can order their food/drinks at the bar and keep separate tabs, or keep a tab open with a server. Oddly, the website states that it's only open to hotel guests, but that doesn't seem to ever be the case.

Creative breakfast dishes in LA

It's surprisingly easy to get a table before 11.30am, although I probably shouldn't be advertising that!

Palm Springs Eats (moved from L.A. board)

The absolute best breakfast in Palm Springs can be had at Cheeky's. It's a delightful little restaurant with thoughtful, creative yet inexpensive food.

Best Party Sandwich Platters

This is a good choice, but be advised that Bay Cities does not slice the 26" party-size sandwiches into individual portions. I learned this the hard way when I had to cut up a dozen enormous subs for a recent work lunch.

Persian - Can anyone help me find this restaurant?

Hello CH!

I'm trying to help out a friend who has been searching for a particular restaurant for a couple of years now. She used to eat at Shah Abbas near the Beverly Center on a regular basis and loved the food, but the ownership changed several years ago. The previous owner also owned a sister restaurant in the Valley somewhere, but she doesn't remember his name or what the restaurant is/was called. Does anyone here know of a persian restaurant in the Valley owned by the previous owner of Shah Abbas?

I apologize for being vague and I know this is a long shot, but I figured it was worth a try!

Hungry Cat and Bowery are my 2 top picks when eating near the Palladium.

Late night dinner date on Westside?

I'm pretty sure they are, and both excellent choices. Waterloo & City serves until at least 10.30pm, because I've been there quite late a couple of times. Per A-Frame's website, they serve food until midnight and the bar is open till 2am.

Late night dinner date on Westside?

Here are some good westside restaurants that offer 10.30pm reservations on weeknights:

Hal's on Abbot Kinney
Beechwood
Ford's Filling Station
Whist at The Viceroy
Toscana in Brentwood
Rustic Canyon
Sor Tino
Brentwood
The Galley on Main St
La Botte
Boa Steakhouse Santa Monica
James Beach
Salute Wine Bar on Main St
Xino in Santa Monica Place

I did a quick search on Opentable for 10.30pm on a Wednesday and then picked out the good ones. There may be others listed there that are good but I haven't been to or haven't been crazy about.

Private room in Santa Monica for 35 people

To fit your budget, the upstairs private room at Border Grill would work.

Madame Chou Chou

I've been several times and love it. Warm friendly service and delicious food. Nothing extraordinary, just solid bistro fare done well.

Dinner DJ Dancing

It's 31Ten, in case you have trouble looking it up. Pizzas are great but the music tends to be awful and the service is spotty.

As an alternative, you might try the Buffalo Club.

Need replacement for Asakuma (good, moderately priced, Santa Monica-ish sushi?)

It wasn't my intention to deliver a swift foot to a fallen man, my apologies :)

I totally see what you mean about the set menus, and it's true that almost everybody opts for them as they offer most of the items Sugarfish does best.

Need replacement for Asakuma (good, moderately priced, Santa Monica-ish sushi?)

Don't I know it! But even a man can't miss a full a la carte menu of sashimi, sushi and rolls :)

Need replacement for Asakuma (good, moderately priced, Santa Monica-ish sushi?)

Yep, it's even written on the menu along with a list of all the a la carte options.

"Almost everyone orders one of the three Trust Me’s; however, you are welcome to order a la carte."

http://www.sugarfishsushi.com/press_images/SampleDinnerMenu.pdf

I've never gone for any of the "Trust Me" options since they aren't really an omakase experience but rather just a set menu.

Need replacement for Asakuma (good, moderately priced, Santa Monica-ish sushi?)

No, you can just order a la carte if that's your preference.

Need replacement for Asakuma (good, moderately priced, Santa Monica-ish sushi?)

You can order a la carte at SugarFISH, it isn't omakase only.

West Side or South Bay - best egg salad sandwich?

But of course :)

I also have to give a shout out to the egg salad sandwich at Bluebird.

I'm no expert but I really like the egg salad sandwich at the Curious Palate.

great Fried Chicken, southern or american style...

I've had it a couple of times and the portion has been generous. One piece of breast meat and a large meaty partially de-boned thigh. I've never managed to finish the whole plate. If I wasn't such a huge eater I'd say it's easily enough food for 2 people, but as it stands I'd say it could feed 2 as long as one of them isn't me. I agree with you that it's definitely on the pricy side, as is most of the menu at TK.

great Fried Chicken, southern or american style...

The fried chicken at Tasting Kitchen on Abbot Kinney is fantastic. On the weekend brunch menu only, it is served with a lovely crisped waffle, a small side of gravy and syrup. Definitely worth checking out.

Finding Dover Sole on the Westside

I've seen Dover Sole at Santa Monica Seafood, but I'm not sure if they carry it all the time. Might be worth a phone call.

Business dinner in Chicago for 14 out-of-towners

Thanks for the rec! We don't need a private dining room as long as the restaurant can accommodate a party of that size.

Thank you! Trattoria No. 10 looks perfect.

Business dinner in Chicago for 14 out-of-towners

Thanks Nsxtasy! I'd really love some tried and true recs and personal recommendations from Chicago hounds vs contacting a private party firm, but thanks for getting back to me!
