Five Guys coming to Encinitas

We saw it too. It's about 100 yards south of where I heard Chick Fil A is going to in (the old bank that then was a Baja Fresh in that same shopping center). And Kohl's is supposed to go in that big former Albertson's, too. Can you say traffic jam?!

... the Shanty, the Office, etc. Too many dives, too little time! Foggy's Notion really took me back. Hadn't thought of that place in a loooong time.

I read today that PCG is moving from Solana Beach to the Charlie's spot on the beach in Cardiff. Good to finally have something in there, although I wonder what it will offer that will be different from Ki's, Chart House, etc.

Blue Ribbon Artisan Pizza Encintias

We went last night for an anniversary dinner--got there right at 5:30 and glad we did because the place was full by 5:50. The corn soup with chili oil was tremendous, green salad was good. We split a basic Blue Ribbon pizza, which is just tomato, basil, and cheese--the pie was divided into six smallish pieces, but with both of us having appetizers, it was more than enough for us. We liked the crust and the tomato sauce was terrific--very light and zesty, not a gloppy, heavy sauce. Simple, but the quality ingredients shone through. Definite thumbs up. We also splurged on the one dessert available, butterscotch pudding with salted caramel sauce. It comes in a mini mason jar (we split one, althought it was very tempting to order another one!) and was very rich. If you'e had the pudding at Claire's on Cedros in Solana Beach, I'd say this is more dense--the sauce is thicker, and the pudding has a little more depth, but we had no complaints--it was still good, just a different texture than Claire's. The cost was $50ish with the apps, dessert and pizza, plus a vanilla creme soda and a glass of wine. We would go back but probably to take advantage of the lunch special--a choice of appetizer (including that great soup) and a sandwich (there are two to choose from if I am remembering correctly, one of them being a caprese-style sandwich on foccacia) for $9. I think it's a great addition to the neighborhood, and do hope the patio comes through soon--seriously, if you don't get there right when it opens, at least on a Saturday night, you're in for a wait.

Bull Taco questions (Encinitas)

On the parking issue, in addition to the on the street and highway 101 spots you can grab if they are open, I've pulled up to the guard shack, told them I'm going to BT, and they gave me a 25-minute guest pass. I parked in the little lot right there and walked over to BT. Not a bad way to do it either, especially if you're in a hurry (which I was) but I do like the walk along the path so it's good either way!

Best dessert place and best dessert youve had in san diego?

I really like the Dream Bar (or are they called Magic Bars?) at Elizaethan Desserts in Encinitas. It's a ooey, gooey, sticky bar chocked full of chocolate, nuts, coconut, all kinds of good stuff. Some people find it too sweet, but I like all their stuff (cupcakes, smores bar, etc.) but if I had to pick one, I'd pick the Dream Bar. It's not an everyday thing, but when you get it, it's dang good.

Good place for lunch in North SD County by beach?

For Italian, you will not be disappointed by Trattoria i Trulli in downtown Encinitas (between Solana Beach and Carlsbad). But be warned, they have sort of funky hours and close for a few hours between lunch and dinner. Maybe closed between 2 and 5? Not sure, check first if you're going and it's going to be an issue.

Anniversary Dinner in Palm Springs

We are going to be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary in Palm Springs. We are in our late 30s, we eat pretty much anything (in San Diego we love Market and Trattoria i Trulli) but not so much Asian. For at least the anniversary dinner of our planned 4-night stay, price is not so much an issue. The fancier, the better. We will, however, also be looking for other more casual places to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner during our stay. We're looking at staying at the Viceroy Hotel in the heart of Palm Springs, so the closer to there, the better.
Ok chowhounders, unload those rec's!!

Carlsbag, Solano Beach, San Diego

It seems like the same places get rec'd on this site over and over again (Bety's, Pizzacato, La Especial, etc.) and any new rec's get crushed by posters who insist the same old places are the only worthy ones. Has anyone else noticed that?

Juanita's is excellent. It is located on Coast Highway in Leucadia, about a mile north of Encinitas Boulevard.

With all due respect to Wanker, I'm not sure how what Tony's, Fidel's, and Don Chuy's do would qualify as "Tex Mex." Each offers what I'd think is traditional Mexican fare, not what you'd expect to find in Texas or New Mexico. My favorite of the three is probably Tony's Jacal, as they specialize in using turkey (tacos, enchiladas, etc.)

I mistakenly read the OP's post to say he wanted to stay below $100 for a couple, which is why I left Market and Blanca off my list. Definitely try to make it to Market. It's on Via de la Valle about 5 minutes east of I-5.

For great Mexican food close by, try Tony's Jacal or Don Chuy. They're on Valley Avenue in the Eden Gardens section of Solana Beach.
Unique pizzas and micro-brews at Pizza Port on the Coast Highway in Solana Beach.
A five-minute drive north up the coast highway into Encinitas would land you some of the best Italian food in San Diego at Trattoria i Trulli (highway 101 and K Street).
Hope you enjoy our area on your visit!!

Which Restaurants are open in Carlsbad on Thanksgiving day.

There are a fair number of resort hotels in Carlsbad (Four Seasons Aviara, the big one on the hill over the Flower Fields, I forget the name, etc.) so I gotta think the restaurants there would be open. Good luck!!

San Diego's Filippi's Pizza Grotto

With as much traffic going past there, I can't believe they can't make it work there. That corner is the Bermuda Triangle of restaurants.

San Diego's Filippi's Pizza Grotto

FYI, the Encinitas Filippi's (the one on Enc. Blvd. east of El Camino Real right near the entrance to Trader Joes, et al) is closed. We passed by it late Friday night and it was dark. And dark again over the weekend. There's a note on the door, we haven't read it, but it's closed. It only lasted a little over 1 year. I've always liked their pizza and I'm sad to see it go.

Visiting San Diego, need some recs

I was gonna say the same thing. San Diego is a lot of things, but what it aint is New York or Miami where people don't go out for dinner until 10:00 pm, especially on Christmas Eve. :) Aside from that one possible hiccup, I think you'll be able to enjoy the dining in our city.

recommendations for Market (SD)

We've only been there once, so while I don't have extensive rec's to give you, I can say one thing for sure: It's all really good. The menu changes often, depending largely on what's for sale at Chino Farms a few miles down the road. Funny thing, I still remember the corn bread that came in the basket before the meal that was sooo tasty. The rest of the meal was fantastic, too. Bottom line: It's a great place, one we're lucky to have close by.

La Especial del Norte Review (SD) [incl. notes, & q's of encinitas, leucadia]

Wow, this is quite a dissertation on a place we are lucky to have in our backyard (practically). When anyone in our house is down with a cold, the rule is a quart of chicken soup from La Especial Norte. Knocks it right out and you're back on your feet!!

food events in San Diego

Taste of Mainstreet in Encinitas is every August. You pay $25 and get a passport for a taste from about 30 or so local restaurants. It's a walking tour with live music, classic car show, and a great way to sample places before you commit to a full meal.
And as mentioned by a previous poster, Taste of Del Mar is on a weekend in mid-September.

Donut shops in San Diego

Actually, VG's is a full-service bakery. We get our kids' birthday cakes from there, they have breads, the chocolate chip and coconut cookie bars are really good too. They even have some high-end kind of desserts (eclairs and such) at the end of the case. It's a great place, a community gathering spot ("the Cardiff City Hall" I think they used to call it) and a short walk to the beach at that! Can't beat it.

Romantic in North County Coastal for under $100

"on the corner?" I'm thinking you're referring to Trattoria i Trulli, which is at 830 South Coast Highway, near the intersection of Highway 101 and H Street in downtown Encinitas. It is a nice place, romantic enough with a small, intimate setting. And it's hands down my fav Italian food in coastal north county. It gets a lot of rec's on this board, and rightfully so.
