"Best" takeout for FiDi/Battery Park (delivery/seamlessweb/pickup)

I wouldn't enthusiastically recommend any of those places. They're all okay, but flawed. Burger Burger is okay, but I much prefer Zaitzeff.

Sophie's is an option only in the absence of any actual decent DR/PR/Cuban places.

Ziggy's is a slightly above-average sandwich shop that charges entirely too much for what is largely pedestrian lunch fare.

When I worked down there, I ate at Terrance once a year: Good Friday. That's it.

I don't really disagree with steakrules85 for recommending these places. I guess it's just a sobering look at the food that I was subjected to for 4 years working down there.

Breakfast options in Battery Park City?

For coffee around WFC, 1668 > Financier > Starbucks. I don't think this is even subject to personal preferences.

Mangez Avec Moi has great food in general, but I prefer the Banh Mi @ the cart in front of 10 Hanover.

Quick lunch options near WFC, TriBeCa

I haven't found anything reliable for lunch since my office moved by WFC a few months ago. Now that it's getting nice out, I'll try to get out a little bit, so I'd really appreciate any starting points.

Thanks in advance

Best donut in Manhattan?

I was actually eating one of those donut cart marble sticks when I saw your post. I thought I was the only one.

(edit: no, not at 10:30pm. i can't post from work)

Best donut in Manhattan?

i've been to donut pub and peter pan, and neither has impressed me that much. but i think that's because i've never been lucky enough to try any really fresh donuts at either.

any idea what the best times are to try and grab a warm donut at pub or peter pan?

Best donut in Manhattan?

I dislike Donut Plant. I like my (cake) donuts crispy on the outside from the frier, and dense but soft on the inside. It's a simple concept that's impossible to find in this town.

Defonte's-To hell with Quiznos, Subway and Blimpie

thanks.. i think i'll check it out tomorrow. as a fellow rosario's mourner, could you opine on which place best replicates that experience?

i still have dreams about my regular (and somewhat atypical) order there: chicken cutlet, hot capicolla, prosciutto, fresh mozz, black pepper, and pesto spread on a sesame hero. it's up there as one of my all-time favorite meals.

24 hours in LES, East Village

12 replies and no Shopsin's mention? And the original request is even for a weekday recommendation.

I have to concur with Katz's, Hoomoos Asli (better/closer than Taim imo), and Momofuku, at least for dessert. Bereket and Sobaya are great too, but miss my cut due to your time constraint.

Mini burgers for a party

I agree. Good fries, but the sliders are a bit bland. They need to switch to potato rolls and steam them a bit longer.

It's decent, but no White Castle.

have you tried apolo on delancey? it may be under new management (i'm not positive), but if their food is the same then i would submit that their pork chop is tastier and a better value--$7 or so for 2 pc pork chop with fried rice and maduros.

lunch: taking advantage of my mid-week vacation day

hi,

i'm taking a random vacation day next week, with the goal of doing absolutely nothing. i was thinking that it would be cool to check out a place for lunch that is either closed on weekends, or just too busy to deal with.

shopsin's is currently in the lead, but i am open to any other suggestions. if you don't mind also providing the ideal time to go, that would be cool too.

i assume most places would be best to check out some time between lunch and school dismissal--maybe 2:15ish?

thanks

Fried Chicken around Union Square?

Well, I split an 8 piece, mac n cheese, and a half order of biscuits, and--if I recall correctly--it ran us a little over 30 after tip.

Granted, the portions were pretty big and the quality was far superior, but this place is well more expensive than Popeye's, counting sides.

paty's taco truck

Yeah, it's the run-down place on 97th & Lex. I've had better tacos in my life, but not in NYC and certainly not for as cheap.

I don't have a menu on me, but they have a good selection of tacos, at least comparable to what you'll find at Paty's.

Fried Chicken around Union Square?

Birdie's on like 8th & 1st is worth the hike. It's gotten mixed reviews on here, but it's some of the best fried chicken I've had in the city. It's pricey though.

new pork chop shop in Chinatown: Wah Ji

I checked this place out last week. The pork chop was a tad too fatty and the chicken was sliced way too thin (there was more batter than chicken). It also seems that they raised the prices a tad.

I didn't dislike my meal by any stretch--it was tasty and inexpensive--but for the price I'd much rather go to Apolo on Delancey and get a chuleta with fried rice and maduros for less. Split an order of crackling chicken for a much more substantial version of what I got here.

nope... but burrito deli on 97th is better and the tacos are 50 cents cheaper

34th & Lexington

Good bars is a pretty vague phrase. What exactly are you looking for? I don't even know where to begin, but:

Ginger Man on 36th & Madison has an obscene selection of beers on tap, if you're into that.

If you're in your early 20's and are looking for a post-college scene, there are literally dozens of bars on 3rd ave, roughly between 25th and 35th, that may appeal to you.

You can take a few stops on the 6 line to Astor place and walk to either the east or west village. There are countless options, depending on your taste.

If you're more into clubs, head to the west side.

Yes, Ottomanelli.. As loathe as I am to keep recommending the same places every time a UES thread pops up, I have to second them as one of the best values in NYC.

They make a better burger than PJ Clarke's, imo, and my favorite sub-$20 steak.

Coming tomorrow....E. 85th area regs & BW Question

My two suggestions are Kurio (eclectic american) and Pio Pio (Peruvian roasted chicken). They're reasonably nice places, but nothing remotely fancy. A kid shouldn't be a problem.

I think Viand is a little overpriced (though it's a great 4am meal). If you are just looking for a simple breakfast (coffee and a pastry), I would suggest going to M Rohr on 86 between 2nd & 3rd.

For pizza, I second Nick's. It's a hike, but it's one of the better pies in New York (and thus, the world).

And another option (though I haven't been) is the European bakery across the street from Two Little Red Hens. With Hens right there, it's obvious why I've never been, but they seem to have more cooked food in addition to pastries.

Pizza recommendation at 39th near 2nd Ave.

I don't have a problem with the calorie count, but ziti pizza just doesn't taste good. It sounds like it should, but it just doesn't work in practice.

Best Pizza UES--80s or 90s

Yup, it's whole wheat only, and most of their pies use cherry tomatoes in lieu of sauce. It's deliberately non-traditional, but some of their pies are really good.
