Portland Food Walking Tour

Has anyone done the food walking tour in Portland? I'm visiting in a couple weeks and thought it might be a nice way to taste a lot while I'm there.

Foodie activities in/near Portland?

My husband and I are going to Portland for a four day weekend from LA (we recently moved from San Francisco). We don't have plans for the weekend yet, but I am interested in any foodie activities near the area (wine tasting, farmers markets, cheese stores, etc). I appreciate any advice.

I'm going to search the board for must eats in Portland, but if you want to throw any out I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

Ortega 120 in redondo?

I just checked it out last week. Make reservations! We waited about 45 minutes for a table and the bar was packed. They only had one bartender so people were waiting for at least 15 minutes to order. The food was delicious. We will go back, but next time with a reservation.

Montecito Restaurant Recs - No Restrictions

I know a great place in downtown Santa Barbara. Try Ca'Dario. It's my favorite restaurant in SB. The smoked salmon pasta is amazing, actually, all their food is amazing. It's very reasonable and all the locals go there. Sorry I can't help you for Montecito proper.

Nominations Pls -- Best Cake Baker for my wedding cake

Alsace-Lorraine in Long Beach is amazing and a great price. The people that work there are so friendly and everytime I went in for cake questions they gave me free cupcakes. My cake was wonderful!!! I also did cupcakes from them for place holders and they were only a buck a piece. I highly recommend them.

Tonight in L.A. - any ideas?

There are three of us in L.A. (all in our late 20s/early 30s) from San Francisco for the night. We are here for work and have about a $35 each budget excluding drinks. We are staying at the Century Plaza hotel and we want to go somewhere that is L.A. but we don't have reservations yet. Where should we eat?

Our only requests are no sushi and no more than a 30 minute drive (we hope that traffic will be slowing down by 7)

Thank you for your help.

Did I ruin my All Clad?

Thank you all for the great advice. I'm going to wash it again today and then use the Barkeepers and more of a "polish" once I've washed it. I will not use anything harsh on it.
Thank you for the advice about the heat level. I am still learning how to cook and maybe I got a little crazy with the heat. I would never think of throwing my pan away....every young cook makes a couple of mistakes and I hope to use this pan for years to come.

Thanks again!

Did I ruin my All Clad?

I got a beautiful All Clad 10 inch stainless steel fry pan for my wedding. I cooked ground turkey for tacos, and then proceeded to wash my pan. I could not get the turkey off the pan without scrubbing hard so I went and bought barkeepers friend. I used that and now the pan looks stained on the cooking surface with whiteish spots that have a rainbow like quality.

I cooked with it again and I feel like everything is now very hard to clean off it. Did I ruin it? Am I cooking wrong? This is my only high quality stainless steel product, but I have never had these problems with my cheaper cookware....help me please! I really want to use my new pan.

Thanks!

Sonoma County... best eating experience < $30 per person?

I really like Dela Santini in Sonoma. I had an amazing pork tenderloin there last year. I know people have mixed feelings about the place, but I had a great experience.

Visiting our son @ Cal

Vik's is amazing Indian food somewhat close to campus. I always loved to take my parents to Raleigh's for them to see my college scene while eating tasty sandwiches and salads. Zachary's has great thick crusted pizza and I really enjoy Somerset for brunch. There is a great cafe on campus in the undergraduate library....the Free Speech Cafe has great salads and sandwiches with a cool vibe....you can feel like one of the students. These area all cheaper places.

Favorite restaurant without reservations

I thought I made a reservation for the Slanted Door tonight for two, but I realized that I made it for a week from tonight so now it's Monday night and I had my heart set on going out to dinner. What are your favorite last minute dinner places in the city? We live in Noe Valley, but will travel anywhere in the city.

Aqua Prix Fixe Only?

I'm supposed to go to Aqua in the next couple of days, but I checked out their menu online and it looks like they only do prix fixe? Is this true?

THanks!

does anyone know where to find a good blt in the city?

The BLT at Toast in Noe Valley is excellent. Crisp bacon, thin slices of tomato (not runny) and they add avocado.

Noe Valley Bakery Peach/Blackberry Pie?

Has anyone had this pie? What are your thoughts? Too sweet, not sweet enough, flaky crust, etc?

Thanks!

sonoma restaurant choices...need to confirm

One of my favorite meals was at Della Santina. I live in San Francisco and have chowed my way through the city, but the meal I had at Della Santina was fabulous and very reasonable. The place wasn't hyped up, but the service, food, and owner were amazing. My husband and I are planning another trip to Sonoma soon just to eat there. I know the other places are supposed to be amazing, but this was about as good as it gets.

Peach Pie in the city

Thanks for your ideas. I'll have to check out Mission Pie, and maybe I'll plan to make a trip south for some Polly's like pies.

Peach Pie in the city

Where I grew up in southern california there were tons of good diners like Polly's Pies, Hof's Hut, and Bake in Broil and other small places that sold cheap good food with a slice of pie. They had the best seasonal fruit pies and every summer I looked forward to peach pie. It doesn't have to be organic or fancy. I just want simple peach pie for a reasonable price...any ideas where I can find this?

Thanks!

TOP 5 RESTAURANTS IN BERKELEY FOR UNDER TEN DOLLARS

Check out Raleigh's (Telegraph at Haste) for lunch or dinner. You can get a great sandwich and beer for under $10. And the waiters are known to undercharge for large parties.

I would also second an earlier vote for Gypsies. I think it's off Durant near Telegraph.

Lastly, if you're ever on Cal's campus, check out the Free Speech Movement Cafe for lunch. It's very good.

Lunch on Main Street Santa Monica- today

I am visiting family for a few days in Long Beach and my husband and I planned on sitting near a pool all day, but the weather isn't really up for that so we're thinking of heading out to Santa Monica. I would love to have lunch on Main Street. Does anyone have suggestions for a good lunch spot there? We are from San Francisco so we already have our share of Chinese and Indian.

Thanks!

On KQED: healthy restaurant guide

This morning on KQED they talked about a healthy restaurant guide website that is endorsed by the restaurant association. Did anyone hear this segment? Can you send me the website link?

Thanks!

Where did Miss Millie's go?

I know Miss Millie's was supposed to move to Oakland....any word on it's opening?

Edible Wedding Favors?

I did cupcakes with our last name initial. I did them to match the cake and I used them for seating. So they were all on a table, each with a name and table number inserted on a small stick. People loved them and they were very cheap favors. It also allowed us to buy a smaller cake because we knew everyone would already have a cupcake.

Need a strufoli or struffoli recipe

Thank you so much. I look forward to sharing this with my family.

Need a strufoli or struffoli recipe

I'm not sure how to spell strufoli, but I tried one in New York and loved the taste. Does anyone have a recipe to share with me?

an affordable, and trendy if possible, place for a birthday?

I would recommend going to one of the Spanish tapas places in the Mission (Ramblas, Esperpento, or Picaro). They are all good and lots of fun for a big group. They have sangria by the pitcher and a very laid back vibe. I always bring out of town guests there and the food is just like what I ate when I lived in Spain.

Another option would be Dosa in the Mission. I'm not sure if they take reservations for that many, but I went there Saturday night with a group of 8 and we all ate and drank wine for $25 a person including tip. All my out of town friends really liked that it was unique.

First Crush downtown is also fun. I'm not sure if it is in your budget.

Where can I find Dannon Azucar yogurt in the U.S.?

I lived in Spain for awhile and I miss Spanish yogurt. I don't know why it's so much better, but it is. I also like the smaller serving size.

In Spain I would always add sugar to plain Dannon yogurt or eat Dannon Azucar(sugar) yogurt. It was sweet, but a little tangy. Does anyone know where I can get this in California? I'm craving this great treat.

Thanks!

It's the season for....pumpkin!

thanks!

It's the season for....pumpkin!

I noticed a topic on the LA board on the best of pumpkin in LA. Does anyone have pumpkin favorites in the Bay?

Ultimate Foodie Tour of NYC

if you buy an entertainment guide for new york they have half price tickets to all the foods of new york tours. I just went on one and booked over the phone, they never actually collected the coupons.

Dinner in Chelsea/ Union Square/ Flatiron

Sensa on 6th avenue and 22nd is really good. They have enough veggie options and their drinks are amazing. They are never too busy before 9pm
