ISO grape leaves in GTA
thanks. i guess i never looked for this in the store before. i found them at a Longo's :)
ISO grape leaves in GTA
i'm looking to get some grape leaves to make dolmades. i think they are available in jars, but from internet searches, likely from specialty food stores. does anyone know where I could buy these (fresh would work too of course!)? there's some middle eastern type stores around the Yonge & Steeles area, but I don't have any names or phone numbers to call. any help would be appreciated! somewhere central and/or in the markham/richmond hill area preferred. thanks!
HELP! trying not to travel too far for cage-free eggs..impossible dream?
i just found this on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2sWyKblWEg
if you do still visit, i'd be interested to know whether the video accurately reflects what you see!
also thanks Idas for the original post, i was wondering the same thing recently about where to find cage-free eggs
Mamasita (Melbourne)
wow i must have lucked out! went there last week for lunch, around 1pm and no wait (though yes, bar stool seating not the most comfortable), it was noisy, but i didn't mind it, as it seemed like a bustling lunch hour type thing. the food was really good. maybe if i had tried going for dinner i might have experienced some of the issues the other posters had...
Tasmania
hi, wanted to give this post a bump, as i have basically the same questions and just arrived in launceston with about a week and a half in tassie total. i hear tasmanian oysters are amazing, any recs for where to get good ones (dining out)? looking forward to chese, wine and fresh seafood here! thanks
Menya Kissou - Best Ramen in Tokyo! [Review] w/ Pics
i'll be in Tokyo later this month for the first time and really want to try Menya Kissou. can anyone confirm if they are indeed only closed the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of every month or if they are closed ALL Wednesdays? (i hope it's not all Weds!) thanks.
Jacques Genin - best millefeuilles au chocolat anywhere?
i seem to have lost the name of the white tea i tried at the tea salon, and can't find anything online. wondering if anyone might know, or someone local could easily find out? if i were in paris, i'd call myself :)
Inatei, a question of value vs. Zen
do you have to tell Inatei ahead of time that you want an omakase (sushi/sashimi only or one with cooked food too)?
Buddha Pie - anyone been??
i was really looking forward to trying this pizza on friday. called for takeout around 7:30 to be informed they were out of pizza!! i don't live in the area, so am definitely disappointed. might be a little while before i can go again, and now i'm going to have to call way ahead to make sure they don't run out!
Negroni
based on such positive reviews from this thread, i checked out negroni for dinner the other night and really enjoyed it. the segovia sausage panini was tasty, i'd love to go back and try the other varieties. tried the nutella panini for dessert as well as peanut butter ice cream (though i wish i had tried the chocolate one, but the peanut butter just sounded so intriguing). i never asked for a sample of the ice cream to help me decide, but i was pretty conflicted about it and since there were no other diners in the restaurant, it would have been nice if that was offered to me (maybe this is only for 'regulars'?)
in general, i found the salad that came with the panini a great side, the bread for the panini was fantastic, just the way i like it, crispy but light, and the interior had a bit of chew but not too much, and it held up really well for both sweet and savoury paninis. also tried the tomato-mozzerella-basil pesto dish which wasn't bad, the cheese was very creamy and there was good flavour in the pesto. i felt it lacked just a bit of 'something' to make it a really amazing dish, but no complaints.
the place was really quite empty when i was there (sunday evening) and there were still moments when the service was spotty (i think friends of the people working stopped by so they were in conversation a lot),. with all that being said, i'd still go back and try other items.
Droste Cocoa Powder
there's a dutch store in richmond hill and it seems they carry Droste cocoa powder (i saw it in their online store). not sure about pricing or anything, and i've never been to the store, but maybe worth looking into... http://www.dutchproducts.ca
Suggestions for restaurants around Yonge/Eglinton
Le Gourmand on Yonge, south of Eglinton has brunch, my friend really likes their ricotta pancakes, i think i had an eggs benny there awhile back and it was fine. service was a tad slow, but friendly.
Charlie Burger's Latest Invite is out...
the food sounds great. how much was the meal this time?
Jacques Genin - best millefeuilles au chocolat anywhere?
from my chowhound research i discovered jacques genin and paid a visit on my recent trip in paris. the chocolate millefeuille was amazing. the white tea they served was also really nice, subtle delicate flavours and aromas. i enjoyed it so much i returned a few days later with a friend to try an eclair and the caramel millefeuille (prefer the chocolate millefeuille the best). i never 'got' what was so great about millefeuilles before, but the made-to-order variety may have ruined it for me, as i think i can't ever eat another one that isn't made that way!

Best Peking Duck in or around Toronto?
after reading about the comments in this thread about Chung King Garden, i went there for the first time for a family dinner, and everyone agreed it was the best peking duck they've had in the GTA (after trying the likes of Ambassador, Peking Man, Emperor and others). great, crispy skin with little to no fat under the skin, thin pancakes that aren't too doughy...the only thing i wish they had (also noted by gina makllet in her article) were the deep fried glass noodles with the lettuce folds course. the fried noodles would have added a great texture to the relatively soft stir-fried duck meat/veg mixture. will definitely be back!
Plateau of Dining in Toronto?
this concept of calling a chef in advance for a special dinner is something i admit i hadn't really considered before, but reading this thread is solidyfing the idea more. i'd be interested to know where/who you end up going with SWS!
Best Eggs Benny in T.O
i didn't have high expectations for the eggs benny at le gourmand, but also found it pretty good, and just as you've described above. compared to le petit dejeuner, i'd definitely pick the le gourmand version to have again (as i mentioned in a post above from last november, the one at le petit dejeuner was a lot thinner and a tad too tart). i sat indoors and also felt service was spotty, but pleasant. also my dining companions had the lemon ricotta pancakes and really enjoyed those, i might try them if i visit again.
Caplanskys on College St - impressions?
how's the wasp situation on the patio? it was pretty bad the first couple of days, hope they've managed to find a solution to keep them away, my friend and i had to surrender our ginger ales...
sukhothai - an off-menu family style chowmeet
thanks again for organizing, and doing the write up! reading this makes me want to go and order some of these dishes again, and i'm frustrated i'll be busy in the next couple of weeks and can't go!
Caplansky's 2.0
went today for brunch. by the time we got there, they were out of latkes, i was really looking forward to trying those. ordered smoked meat hash and the versht and eggs, both got fries in lieu of latkes, and chose gryfe bagels. i quite liked the salami and eggs, tasty, not too salty. service was a bit slow but understandable i think, it being the first day, and they set expectations accordingly up front. if not for the pesky wasps, eating on the patio was nice. plan to go back and try other items.

Thai in Toronto
oh i'm looking forward to when you try sukhothai (you haven't yet, right?), i've so totally enjoyed the food there, i'd be interested to see what you think since you have tried many places in Toronto!
My brief, whirlwind tour of the Toronto Chinese scene (or at least a small fragment thereof).
enoki mushrooms are one of my faves too. lai wah heen isn't at the top of my to-visit list, but might be inching its way up! thanks for the reviews!
Black Hoof
mine looked to be slightly different, definitely no chocolate shavings, but the caramel sauce was really good. you can't see from this pic either, the pieces of bacon that are within

Black Hoof
i went for the first time recently and really enjoyed it. it seemed that there was only a dessert of the day on offer from their menu and the night i went it was a bacon chocolate bread pudding (4 pieces on a plate) topped with fresh whipped cream. a bit too many pieces of bacon and not enough chocolate for my taste (and i wasn't sure about the combo to begin with), but otherwise it would be have been tasty. wonder if they have some dessert items they offer more than others, i'd love to try a lemon tart on a later visit.
Restos on your "to-do" list
oh, I forgot about Rebozos, that would go on my list as well
korean ribs from Alex Quality Meat Market?
thanks for the info. can you buy ribs at Alex that are pre-marinated, and/or fresh or frozen? i remember the ones from Galleria fresh were really expensive so have opted to get frozen and buy marinade separately, but wonder if it's noticeably better to get ones already marinated.
korean ribs from Alex Quality Meat Market?
someone i work with mentioned the korean beef ribs from Alex Quality Meat Market were worth checking out. has anyone bought from this place before? for korean meats uptown, i've checked out Galleria, i've never heard of Alex...

Visiting Toronto - Must-Try Restaurants?
thanks for the tip, i'll keep sunny mart in mind!
Nota Bene tonight -- any recent/new recommendations?
i didn't order onion rings the one time i went back in the winter, but they sure looked good, piled really high on a plate (or in a shallow dish). enjoy the dinner, looking forward to hearing people's comments about it!
