San Antonio steak - looking for a big one!
Hi everyone! My husband and I moved to San Antonio (from Montreal) a little over a year and a half ago and are still exploring restaurants here. Neither one of us is a big steak connaisseur, though. Some friends of ours will be visiting us in March, and they've put in a request for a 72 oz steak! I've looked around on these boards and have only found a place in Amarillo that offers such a monster (as a gimmick, I realize), but obviously I'd like someplace in San Antonio. Online research yielded a place that has a 32-oz steak on its menu, but I was hoping you would have some recommendations. (Our friends like the Peter Luger-type steaks, if that's any help.) Thanks!
Where to find Kumquats in Montreal
Actually, I did see some at ExoFruits (but I didn't check the price).
Mr. Steer
They're good burgers, but not my favorite(not in my top 5 places in Montreal, to be honest). I have friends who swear by them, though.
wrap city gourmet
Totally agree. That being said, my husband loves the place, so I guess there are enough people like him to keep them in business.
Frozen Pearl Onions . . . Where?
Ha! That Metro doesn't have ANYthing! (It's my Metro too, I feel your pain.)
I do know that the Metro on Queen Mary (near Snowdon metro station) has more things, as do ExoFruits and Le Marché du Village, but I don't know about the onions, sorry.
Real Beijing Duck / Peking Duck - best place in Montreal?
I remember having a very good Peking duck in Montreal on one occasion. Unfortunately, I was too young to pay attention and I don't remember where it was (someplace in Chinatown is all I know!).
Real Beijing Duck / Peking Duck - best place in Montreal?
In my experience, Peking Garden makes good Peking duck, but certainly not the best. I first had the dish in Beijing, and Peking Garden does not make it nearly as good as it was in China...
That being said, I'm looking forward to trying Mon Nan!
Appleton Vietnamese Resto in Cote des Neiges
For a Vietnamese restaurant in CDN, might I suggest Pho Lien instead?
novelty cake/ muffin tins
Les Touilleurs would have some, but they would be seasonal.
Looking for small dessert dishes like Sofitel
It's 152 Laurier Ouest. I just love that store!
caterer near Québec or Beaupré
I've personally had great experiences with Banquets Baillargeon (http://www.banquetsbaillargeon.com/); they catered my wedding as well as my cousin's wedding. They are located in St-Anselme, maybe 20 min south of Quebec City. I haven't tried their "méchoui", but they do offer it.
Bouchees Gourmandes: reopening soon!!!
That's true, they had all these postcards from all over the world, sent by their customers... I loved that place.
Grains of paradise
I'm now asking for a friend (to impress her with the ressourfulness of this board's community): Where can one find grains of paradise in Montreal? They're called "maniguette", "grains de paradis" or "poivre de paradis" in French. Épicesdecru.com doesn't seem to carry any. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks! :)
Cocoa nibs?
I figured I would ask here, since recent post have enabled me to find other ingredients I had been looking for (vanilla beans and pomegrenate molasses). Where can I find cocoa nibs in Montreal?
None of the "big" grocery stores in my neighborhood carry it, and neither do the smaller, European-style stores. Aubut didn't have it. And I was just at Jean Talon Market yesterday, but La Dépense/Olive&Épices do not have it either (they used to carry it, but they no longer do).
In theory, I could probably order it online, but I'd prefer buying it in person. Do you know of any stores in Montreal that do sell cocoa nibs?
Organic pastry flour and cultured French butter?
I would second Aubut for the flour.
Fresh peaches in November?
My husband is baking his way through "Baking Illlustrated" and is making all the recipes - in order. Now that he's in the chapter about fruit pies, this is somewhat of an issue, as a lot of fruits are now out of season. We were able to use frozen rhubarb and frozen berries for some pies, but the next one call for FRESH peaches (and personally, I hate canned peaches, so that suits me just fine). Is there any way that we could find those in Montreal next week (imported from God knows where)? Or should we just forget it and make the pie next summer?
Thanks for your advice!
Where to get pomegranate molasse in Montréal?
Let me know if you find some! I've been looking for it for months. Nothing in the European-style grocery stores in my neighborhood, nothing at Aubut... Doesn't Petit Alep have something like that in their menu, though?
What's The Best Montreal Area Dim Sum Joint, Right Now?
I'd recommend Maison Kam Fung in Chinatown.
NEED TO FIND RED VELVET CAKE IN QUEBEC
If you mean Quebec City, chances of finding red velvet cake are slim to none. I got married near there last year and my baker had never heard of it - I ended up giving her a recipe to make my wedding cake. She may still have it and be able to make it on demande, BUT it's in a (very) small town about 30 min south of Quebec City.
If you mean the province of Quebec, then your chances increase slightly in Montreal. As moh said, Cocoa Locale *may* have some, but I'd also recommend the red velvet cupcake at Les Glaceurs.
If you feel like making it yourself, I've got the best recipe ever on my blog. And in response to wilmagrace, you can get the red color from beet juice if you wish, so that cuts down on the "artificial red" factor.
But as previous posters have said, red velvet cake is unfortunately not nearly as popular here as in the States or as in other anglophones provinces (I had great red velvet cake in BC, too). It's too bad, because that's one of my favorites!
Restaurant with pool tables / pool hall with food
There's also that 3-storey place in the old Forum, on the corner of Ste-Catherine and Atwater (this is an actual restaurant with a pool hall).
Chinese mooncakes
Thank you so much for this thread. I had been craving them and didn't know where to go. Now I get to introduce my husband to these little gems. :)
Bouchees Gourmandes: reopening soon!!!
WHAT?!? Seriously? I was just there a week ago for brunch... That was one of my favorite places! And the nice lady didn't say anything about closing...
blind test -- the tastiest milk is...
I second this. Lactaid milk definitely has a weird aftertaste! And breaking down the lactose into glucose and galactose should, in theory, make the milk slightly sweeter, but the taste should remain about the same (so I don't understand where Lactaid is going wrong). So Natrel, all the way!
Your fave ice cream flavors from the Mtl ice cream shops
Two scoops at Bilboquet is just a little over $4.
who's the Montreal cake boss ?
I don't think there is a place quite like the shop on Cake Boss... There are places for fancy cakes (like http://www.jessicaberardcakes.com/ or even Pekarna). The StregaNona Dolci cakes looked like they belong on CakeWrecks, though! They're not on the same level as the ones superbossmom are asking for.
