Palos Verdes B-day meal Question
A very belated reply. The food was so-so at the breakfast buffet - pretty standard buffet fare. Chilled crab claws were still partially frozen. Food was left sitting in the chafing dishes way too long and dried out. Slices of ham were found all over the counter .. a mess! The omelet and waffles were nice and fresh since they are made to order. They were not ready for the crowds when I went. The buffet was a disaster. Staff were standing around talking to eachother - not replenishing items that had clearly been sitting out way too long. Also, the layout is needs to be reconsidered - they put all of they chilled seafood right by the staff entrance to the kitchen. People are always drawn to the seafood and there was a line that blocked the staff entrance so there was a lot of bumbling around. Diners certainly felt in the way. Go before 10:30am and the buffet is less expensive .... and then you won't feel so bad about if you get sloppy service and sub par food.

Where to dine in Vegas?
Thanks All. L'Atelier is certainly presenting itself as a front runner. I made reservations. Should I specify seating at the counter? Or is that for walk-ins?
Ko Olina--anything noteworthy?
We will have a car. My husband is pretty familiar with the area - but hasn't been in many years.
Ko Olina--anything noteworthy?
Thank you Joebob! I look forward to reading your other post.
Ko Olina--anything noteworthy?
I'm heading to Ko Olina in a few months. Does anyone have any updates to the original posting? Any recommendations for lunch or dinner around there?
Palos Verdes B-day meal Question
Glad to hear this. I satayed at Terranea this weekend and did not have a good experience at their restaurant California Kitchen at breakfast. We ended up going to the Admiral Risty for dinner- a locals favorite.
I'm also happy to hear that you found the staff to be good - at the other places around the hotel (Nelsons, Lobby Bar, California Kitchen) the staff was frantic and ill prepared ... with the exception of the quiet adult pool.
Deep-fried hot dogs in Phoenix?
Do they fry with batter ... like a corn dog or a Pronto Pup (for those from the south)?
The Birth of a New Era? Delicious and Healthy California-style Ramen using Seasonal, Local Vegetables at Ramen California [Review] w/ Pics!
Another great review.
Ramen California is sooooo incredible. I'm going back tomorrow. Fingers crossed that they have the Reggiano Cheese Tofu Ramen (they were out on my first visit). I had the Marsala and it was delicious. My mouth is already watering for that bread and the fish carpaccio.
Thanks to Rameniac for the find. Although, the waitress I had on my first visit was cursing your name (kidding!) ... but the were very flustered saying they weren't prepared for so many people during their soft opening ... "but then there was this blogger." ha ha! I knew exactly who they were talking about!
Where to dine in Vegas?
I'm thankful for both the daring and the normal suggestions!
Where to dine in Vegas?
I will be going to Las Vegas next month with my husband. We will be there for two nights. How do I possibly narrow down all of the options!?! I'd love to hear from Chowhounders about your favorite dining experiences in Vegas.
Bouchon? L'Atelier? Alex? Le Cirque? lunch at Burger Bar?

I haven't heard of this place. Is it similar to Surfas in Culver City?
Best breakfast burrito in LA??
I LOVE the breakfast burritos from "LBJ Burgers" ... behind "El Burrito Jr" on PCH in Redondo Beach. I get mine with bacon and sometimes add avocado.
Also, the breakfast burritos at Amigos Tacos? They have several locations, but I prefer the one at 3216 Manhattan Ave. (in Hermosa Beach).
Breakfast Burrito: 2 eggs, cheese, bacon, sausage, ham, hash browns and salsa.
mmmm
Birthday dinner in the South Bay
How about Cafe Pierre in Manhattan Beach? I would call and ask about their corkage.
Buona Vita in Hermosa Beach allows you to bring your own bottle of wine - no corkage. They are very reasonably priced. Can get a bit crowded and noisy - more "casual romantic."
Worried for Ortega 120
Yes, this is the place on PCH in Redondo (near the new Tokyo Blue). If you really want to try it, I recommend going for lunch or at an off-hour when they are not as busy and can give some attention to service.
Worried for Ortega 120
I have been so excited about Ortega 120 since they opened. mmmmm, too many favorites to describe in detail right now! The prices are high, but I thought they were worth it ... until recently.
Lately, ever since they are becoming increasingly busy and more popular, I'm finding that their service is becoming both hasty, negligent, and borderline rude.
We went last night with family visiting from out of town. When we were seated, the table was only partially set (some of us missing silverwear etc). We ordered an appetizer to share. They mistakenly served that to another table who of course said "we didn't order that." The busser returned the dish to the kitchen. Our server came out later with the dish (the same one that had gone to the other table and then been sitting in the kitchen for 10 minutes) to say "This was served to another table and then returned to the kitchen, you're entrees are almost up, so I won't charge you for this." (cold, soggy, no thanks! ... Oh and guess what ... the appetizer was on the bill at the end! grrrr)
The bussers are overly aggressive, clearing plates before the group was finished ... making us feel like we were in their way, and we needed to leave quickly to make room for the next round of waiting diners.
I'm also finding the (female) owner's attitude to be increalingly conceited and self-important. Advice to her ... if you are going to walk around to greet people in your restaurant, please try to be warm and welcoming and not braggish. If an owner decides to greet guests at their tables, it should be done in a way to make people feel welcomed and make it a place they want to stay ... but then her staff is bumbling around her, rushing you out the door. Her attitude (and prices) are so inconsistent with their "Chili's" style service. The food can stand alone for only so long.
I'm sorry to complain so much. I truly am worried for them.
I may miss the classic impala margarita (oh, and the pomegranate-ginger margarita)and the tuna crudo (and the lamb shank, and their perfect carnitas, and, and, and.. ) but I think I'll take a break for a while and see if they figure it all out.
Ortega 120 in redondo?
I just saw this place the other day. I'm so glad to have a report - thanks!
I can't wait to try.
What to order at the Red Fort: The culture cuisine of India (Torrance)?
Speaking of their Samosas, I was perusing the menu online and cracked up reading the description of Samosas:
"A lovely snack for any day when you're just a little more than nibbly and a little less than hungry."

Ah, good stuff!

I can't wait! Thank you for the mouthwatering reply.
What to order at the Red Fort: The culture cuisine of India (Torrance)?
I'm currently on a mission to find my favorite Indian food in the south bay. I've tried Addi's and Akbar. Next on my list is the Red Fort. I've been reading good things about the Red Fort on other sites (but have only found a few reviews here - sorry if I missed more).
Have you been to the Red Fort and have some "must try" suggestions for me?
